I'm old enough to remember when many British Rail services had a dining car serving restaurant food cooked from scratch in the onboard kitchens.....and it was MUCH better than all those silly mythical stories of BR 'curled up sandwiches'. Served by professional stewards with real panache too! Great to see this service in Wales!
@Ben-xe8ps2 ай бұрын
Yes and the stewards were so professional and provided the silver service with the train in motion without falling over or dropping/spilling anything. Properly laid tables with white linen tablecloths. I also recall back in the 60's and 70's, when it was reasonably priced, on an inter-city journey there were often two sittings for the same meal with a full whole coach at each sitting and the price was such that whole families, not just business travellers, could eat there. In those days 2nd class passengers could use the restaurant cars. I recall the stewards passing through the train asking passengers if they wanted to eat and handing out little cards for 1st sitting or 2nd sitting. The meals were of course freshly cooked on the train but quite basic. Then sometime in the mid-80's they banned 2nd class passengers from the restaurant cars, improved the standard of the meals and increased the prices, but even so there was still high demand on peak business trains. I am not a big fan of the new idea of including food in the price of 1st class tickets and serving something resembling a cheap supermarket ready meal. I much prefer the idea of nothing included (except perhaps complimentary tea or coffee) but the option to eat a proper meal in the restaurant car. But how much would those highly professional silver-service trained stewards have to be paid these days?
@robertp.wainman40942 ай бұрын
@Ben-xe8ps Lovely memories - just as I remember! Prices must have been comparatively reasonable - as a student in the 1970s I could actually afford a 'freshly made' sandwich and hot drink from the white jacketed stewards pouring at the table with real professionalism from large silver plated tea and coffee pots......they also gave the impression the job was thoroughly enjoyed as they were invariably cheerful and humorous. I too dislike the concept of 'complimentary' food and drink included in 1st Class fares - a proper 'restaurant car' should be open to anyone........although now a little better off financially than my student days - I baulk at the prices, even for a pre-packed ludicrously described sandwich with umpteen (tasteless) ingredients......not to mention the more often than not drab, disinterested service.
@MervynPartin2 ай бұрын
I agree with you completely. I have enjoyed proper meal service on trains and also had freshly prepared sandwiches (Didcot station buffet made some lovely cheese and onion sandwiches!). It is regrettable that so many people have blindly believed the pre-privatisation slurs against British Rail food. Well done TfW for keeping standards high.
@randall8379Ай бұрын
@@Ben-xe8ps I agree however I do remember many excellent meals on British Rail dining cars in the 1970s. If by basic you mean roast beef and Yorkshire pudding then I guess it was basic - but very well done and served with style by liveried waiters in a dining car with a white table cloth.

It's impressive to see such exceptional service offered at great value for money. The UK Government must significantly increase investment in its railway system, as evident from the following: 1. Price Rationalization: The cost of services remains high, such as paying £30 for a 50-mile journey between Newbury and London Paddington in Standard Class, which seems disproportionate. 2. Aging Infrastructure: The best first-class coach in the country is nearly 30 years old, reflecting years of underinvestment in modernization and upgrades.

TfW is owned by the devolved welsh government much like scotrail is owned by the Scottish government. That’s how they can afford to run trains like this.

@billymcmedic4221 does that mean rail is renationalised?

So cheap, you would pay much more than that in a restaurant in Inverness where I live. I always really happy with LNER First Class, but I think your journey actually surpasses LNER 😊 pity they don’t come up to Inverness 😂

This is far superior to LNER in every way, not just the comfort

Crewe may be an important railway town but it’s an absolute dump. Although we do have a lovely new council funded multi-storey car park that, at current usage rates, will only take 600 years to pay for itself😮

I tried to catch this train. I don't think i can explain how big of a mistake that was. Cancelled to Manchester and starts at crewe +20 min delay Transfer to crewe around a hour later via a slow northern service Wait at crewe for another 1 hour and find out train has been completely cancelled and be forced to take the next one Be forced to take a 3 car overcrowded CAF 197 despite having a 1st class ticket That also gets delayed by 30 mins due to a bridge strike Miss my transfer to swansea by literal hours so I had to talk my way onboard of a GWR And finally, I only got half my money back out of the 170 pounds. I don't think I hate any other operator as much as TfW for that.

That sounds like the most TfW experience ever. They're notorious for cancelling premiere services (the class 67s break down a lot) and replacing them with 2 car 197s without notice. Just in my limited experience riding on them, took a 158 service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth, they terminated the service at Macnylleth due to flooding on the line, THEN the rail replacement bus was delayed by a hour due to a farmers protest on the road between Macnylleth and Aberystwyth haha. And only managed to get a 50% delay repay from that haha.

Watched this Video which i found it very good, but typical on exlaining Manchester, Greater Manchester is not classed in the population stakes for the UK only Mancunians do this like you have to inflate the size of the City of Manchester, Manchester Picadilly Station is in the City of Manchester which has a population of 580,000 citizens not 3 million as you put it

@@NonstopEurotrip Yep Manchester Piccadilly Station may be in Greater Manchester but it's official place is in The City of Manchester, Greater Manchester is a Metropolitan County Council that covers Towns nd Cities in South East Lancshire and North East Cheshire so there are many Stations in Greater Manchester such a Stockport, Cheadle Salford, but Manchester Picadilly Station is in the City of Manchester
