His first 4 seasons require elaborate context to fully understand why Washington failed him. 1: in the 2012 draft, The Washington front office BADLY wanted RG3, but HC Mike Shanahan didn’t (I believe he wanted to stay at pick 6, and draft either Ryan Tannehill or a non qb). After management forced him into it, Mike still went and drafted another qb he wanted in the 4th round: Kirk Cousins. 2: RG3 was a dynamic dual threat qb, but HC didn’t want to redesign his schemes to fit that style of play, and was considering either sitting RG3, or forcing him to play in a non-fit system. Once again, management forces him to start RG3 as a rookie, and essentially gave him the ultimatum of playoffs or fired. HC begrudgingly adapted his system in 2012 to fit his new qb, but when this system proved dangerous for RG3 with injury risk, he ignored those risks and put 100% of his in-jeopardy career on the shoulders of RG3 at that point. 3: When RG3 was injured late in the season, after team doctors recommended he not play the rest of the year, he was thrust into the game in an act of desperation and pettiness. I’m sure 3 wanted to play, but a responsible team wouldn’t risk that and would sit him so he could heal up. Nonetheless, HC refused to reconsider his schemes that year, and still burdened 3 with too much weight and risk, and didn’t properly consider the long-term health of RG3, because Shanahan didn’t want RG3 long-term. 4: in that Seattle playoff game, 3 had previously injured his leg before the famous knee explosion. But due to either incompetence on the part of the team, or a spiteful emotional response by HC, 3 was let back into the game, and the rest… well, you know what happens there. (Fun fact: we all know Dan Snyder is a cheap piece of garbage, but did you know that since he took over as owner in 1999, the Washington football field is, along with Soldier Field, considered one of the worst, lowest-quality, and most dangerous playing fields in the NFL?) 5: in 2013 (RG3s 2nd year), HC had his job security back, but, even after management forced him to start RG3 again, he went back to his old system, flat out refusing to keep accommodating the unique skills of his young qb (Granted this may also have been to keep him healthy, but knowing who Mike Shanahan is, I bet it was him challenging 3 to play in a fit that wasn’t for him). This proved to be difficult for RG3, attempting to recover and learn a new system. Shanahan basically wanted to tank 3’s value, efficiency, and productivity so he could play the guys he wanted to. 6: Mike Shanahan was let go after 2013, after failing RG3s comeback from injury, and going 3-13. After hiring Jay Gruden, pretty much because of the name alone, to start the 2014 season as HC, Washington went 4-12. Once again, they would have RG3, for the 3rd straight year to begin his career, adapt to a new system while recovering from injury. 7: After more injuries, and play regression (gee I wonder why), RG3 was benched for Kirk Cousins in 2015, who led the team to the playoffs with a 9-7 record, and was considered their new franchise qb. 8: He then played for the browns in 2016. Enough said I’m sorry for the novel but I was a huge fan of RG3 when I was in middle school, and was absolutely devastated and heart broken when his knee betrayed the laws of physics. After some “research” (videos on youtube), I came to discover the context of why RG3 became so irrelevant as an on-field product. For this, and other reasons more well known, I will always have a scowl on my face when thinking of the Washington Commanders franchise. Still, I’ll always respect him going out as a mentor for the next dynamic, athletic young qb of the NFL. I hope he does make a comeback, and gets treated right. TL/DR: Washington, thru negligence, incompetence, pettiness, and intentional ill-will, sabotaged the developmental part of RG3s career, and made his comeback from injuries far too difficult later on. Then he played 1 too many seasons for the browns (who are known for the AMAZING treatment of their QBs as well [sarcasm]), and last appeared as a mentor/backup to Lamar Jackson for 3 years.

Nice recap. I didn't know about the Head Office pressures, but if anything, _except for_ their telling HC "it's the playoffs or your head" everything they did should have made everything *better* for 3. So it looks like both they & HC wanted their wishes to come true regardless of reality. But as I had just written above, Shanahan has never been someone who deals well with things that don't go according to his preconceived notions. The year Jay Cutler broke into the league, HC *refused* to start him. It's rare that THIS happens, so listen carefully, people: John Madden was openly wondering why this was, for _weeks!_ Eventually, HC was *shouting at Jake Plummer during a game on the field* without calling a time out. Basically, it was HC getting mad at Real Life not following His Expectations. But he wouldn't even _look_ Cutler's way, making Jay feel worthless, something I still think affected him for the rest of his life, certainly his career, as he made mistakes in Chicago that can almost only be explained as being done by someone hurting inside. (Enough with the armchair psychology, yeah). To me, Shanahan will always be one of those guys who, between his looks & Stern Command Style will always be mistaken for "good" the way Donald Trump's billionaire status will always be mistaken for him having good business sense. "Step the last: file for chapter 11 bankruptcy."

Except it's not how it happened. Rg3 got his dad to demand the Redskins to use him as a pocket passer because he got injured running around. Rg3 also dissed and threw his OL under the bus several times in post game press conferences... to the point they were throwing blocks... rightfully so. The only 2 people who wanted rg3 to play in the playoffs were himself and his dad. Shanahan wanted to sit him.

Being from the DMV (PG County, Maryland).. I'll never forget working at Fedex field as a parking attendant where I'd meet many players and celebrities attending the game. I met RGIII in 2013 when he was slowing making his exit and started getting hated. I asked him "how do you keep your composure when so many people dislike you?" He replied (loosely) " Being a person of character and being able to tune out the noise by simply living my life.." I'll always have love for him for that moment. Much respect to you! RGIII

I loved the little bit that he played as a Raven. I remember in the 2019 season seeing the "Heisman" formation play with him, Jackson and Ingram lined up. EA put that formation in Madden 20 that year too and kept it in the playbook till Madden 21. I also remember that 2019 opening game against Miami. Lamar crushed them so bad that the RG3 got to take snaps in the 4th quarter. RG3 was 6/6 for 55 yards. He also got a TD Pass on a 4th and goal play.

I liked when Baltimore signed him, RG3 is a great dude that was dealt a pretty crappy hand. And you can tell he really loves the Ravens, and Lamar Jackson. Stand up dude and it's so sad what happened to him, the Redskins ruined him by not providing him help at Offensive line and Receiver

You are so wrong. He is a Quarterback!!!! He hurt his leg not hos throwing hand or his brainless head. Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Joe Burrow and on and on suffered this injuries and came back just a good as they were before the injury. I'm a born and raised Redskins. RG3 was cocky arrogant, did not study, did not know how to read a defense and on and on. They had no playbook for him at Baylor. Today he runs just as fast as he did. That's the problem with these playground quarterbacks that NFL is pushing very hard. Lots of Highlight reels, no championships and a short shelf life. You had many teams that skins scrimmaged during training camp. Almost all that Cousins was the better quarterback. There is a reason nobody wanted him after he was released. BECAUSE HE SUCKS BEING A QUARTERBACK! Talent without a good work ethic only takes you so far. The coach and his staff did want to draft RG3. They forced by Snyder

His problem was he is a running QB and that’s a tough gig in the NFL. In college many running QBs set the world on Fire but in the NFL you can maybe do well for a year or two before defenses figure you out, look at Colin kaepernick. Also RGIII was not an Ironman meaning he got hurt to easily.

magical. Yeah, Tebow had a magical rookie season, too. That RPO style is fun to watch, but the shelf life on these guys is short short short. Basically they excel their first season because of fresh legs and pure "make-a-play" adrenaline. After that, coaches figure out their weaknesses, defenses go extra hard at running QBs, and it's downhill from there.

At the time I couldn’t believe it when Andrew luck got picked over him but there was a lot of controversy because the Indianapolis Colts didn’t want RG3 and all that was well known but watching him in Washington was Electric it was like watching a second coming of Michael Vick just with a better arm talent and Vick was my hero growing up it sucks to see how his career ended and to not get to go out on your terms makes it even more harder

RGIII was great. Period. His career ended shortly because his teams mainly relied on his ability to run. To add insult to injury, he was a horrible slider. He took unnecessary hit and his coaches allowed it until he hurt himself. So......RGIII didn't fall from grace. He wasn't a bust at all. Everyone knows it so, who cares who doesn't. They don't know football.

One reason some qbs have downfalls is because they need a new team the reason why is when you see them look left and right they can’t find people that are open which pressures them and forces the to run get sacked or throw it away that’s why if your good and go on a pretty bad team your destiny is to lose it’s sad how people that have mad potential get on the worst teams😢

I remember that first season he had with Washington. It was truly remarkable to watch his gameplay. Instead of letting RGIII rest that remaining 1st season they pushed him so much since there was still a chance to make the Wild Card with 2 games remaining in the season. The desperation of just being in the Playoffs overriding RGIII's health to this day is what I believe lead to his career downfall. Imagine what a 100% RGIII( with no leg injuries ) could have done if they kept him Injured free and well protected. We'll never know. Thank you RGIII for what you did for the game.

He wasn’t good !!!.. he was frail .. he couldn’t read defenses .. he held the ball too long .. he couldn’t even perform a basic damn QB slide .. he was a jackass to his teammates .. his father was meddling in locker room biz .. ect .. ect .. ect ..
@waltsoph3

@@JoiRandom Granted there are QB's that had the same style of QBing of RGIII who went on to have better careers. Still to me that first full season he had in Washington was truly a work of QB art. He pulled off some miracles considering the protection he had to work with at that time. Its just a shame what happened afterwards.

@@waltsoph3 I agree I had Redskin season tickets back then I attended every home game that season and enjoyed watching RG3.. but I just remember watching him all that season before the injury .. my dad and I both always commented on how light and frail he seemed .. example how he would get hit after a throw or sacked and would go down like an absolute rag doll.. you could see it .. we both kept commenting that this kid is gonna get hurt .. it wasn’t sustainable.. and I disagree that he didn’t hv any protection .. he held the ball too long and made the oline look worse than they really were .. I was at the Ravens game where he got hurt the first time .. RG3 was taking shots that entire game .. many of which were avoidable ..
