It's an interesting concept. I think Steam HATES exclusives for a specific platform. The Steam deck was designed to bring their games TO the handheld space to INTENTIONALLY make it so Steam games were not limited to the PC/ Microsoft ecosystem. Making A deck exclusive game would be a backwards step for them. However, Indie developers TARGETING the deck while ALSO supporting PC would be VERY good for the deck. However, for some Indy titles, the Deck is ALREADY the best place to play them by nature of their game being possibly NOT on the switch or Cheaper on steam AND many Indie games have lower power requirements.

Personally it’s killed it for me. The switch was only good for indies and exclusives. Now that the Steam deck does indies better. Actually PC has always been the place for indies. All the switch is good for now are exclusives. Sometimes they are on PC as long as years before the Switch sees them. And even then, there’s Yuzu and Ryujinx. And those two emulators run great on the Deck and are improving daily.

I'm a Linux gamer. The Steam Deck is perfect for me. PC has had more indies than Switch forever. Also, PC has open source Free games that Nintendo wouldn't dream of putting on the Switch. Battle for Wesnoth is still one of my favorites.

Coming back to this after just getting a Steam Deck is interesting. I do wish Nintendo had better account systems, but not for the reasons Bob said. Some people can only afford one console and their Switch may be their only one, so being able to share games more easily would be great. I still think the whole switching from TV to handheld thing works because of that. One of the other things that Nintendo does well (which is quickly disappearing with the whole deck verified thing), is having games just work out of the box. PCs were always a pain for me due to that, I just wanted to sit down and play. However, now more and more developers are working with the Steam Deck specifically in mind, I think that won’t be much of an issue with the deck for long.

It really feels to me like the "Steam Deck will kill the Switch" argument is only coming from the perspective of the most "serious" gamers. Right now, if I want to buy a Steam Deck, I need to place an order for a system that will at some point cost me at least £349, which I will get "sometime" after October, and which, at the unconfirmed moment it does become available, will only be available to me for 72 hours, in which time I need to act fast to actually secure the item I've supposedly already ordered. Or, I could go to Argos right now and buy a Switch. By the time the Steam Deck gets over all the weird hoops you need to jump through in order to acquire one, and starts to be a widespread success, Nintendo will in all likelihood have moved onto their next console. Add onto that in my own network of friends and colleagues who game, only one other than myself really knows what it is, and only a handful of others have even heard of it. So while I imagine the Steam Deck will be a success in it's own way, I have serious doubts whether it will ever rise to Switch-level popularity and success. Right now it seems to be catering to a far more niche audience of gamers. And that isn't a criticism (before the PC gamer crowd leaps on me to call me a Nintendo fanboy), but it just seems obvious that the two systems serve very different purposes and cater to different audiences. They'd have to be a lot more comparable for one to kill the other. (Anyway, if you got this far thanks for reading another instalment in my comment series "These Things I Believe")

I think you hit the nail on the head. My impression was also that most people saying it's a "Switch killer" (btw, good luck trying to "kill" a console that sold 100+ million units so far) weren't interested in the Switch in the first place. Which is valid, of course, Nintendo with its quirks isn't for everyone lol, but it's obviously gonna screw their perception of the general market

Yeah, highly doubtful it will ever catch up.to.the switch. It's definitely no switch "killer", but it's very good for what it is at it's price point, and will definitely capture its own market if PC gamers. also, the end of your comment made me laugh 😂

Personally got the Steam Deck a month ago and it has completely replaced my Switch largely as there’s no games coming for Switch I am into at the moment and I have the whole Steam library to play with including a load of PS4 content now migrating over. Big problem for the Deck is availability if they could do Nintendo number maybe but its never going to replace Nintendo whilst they have the exclusive content they have.

The reason why anyone would be sceptical towards the Steam Deck is the fear of the unknown. Why? You may ask. Because ultimately, it is the most personal console/PC handheld device that can do a bit of everything that anyone would want. Unless you absolutely copy the setup of someone else, your experience will never be the same as the other steam deck guy. That said, valve even thought of that so you can play any game at any setting you desire as well as copy other people's profile to get the best visuals or best FPS. Again, wherever your imagination takes you. The possibilities are endless and the only limitation is the user and his will to explore how deep the rabbit hole goes. Except when the hardware starts to show it's age, I suppose. So if you want a portable gaming PC with decent support for gaming as well as a desktop experience, Steam Deck is a future proof investment. I might actually make it my daily driver PC setup if I seriously want one and order it. Building a PC is my primary choice but sadly in Europe it's not a budget friendly investment anymore. Hence why my interest in Steam Deck. I can literally buy a monitor, bundle that to a keyboard and mouse and there is my Linux/Windows PC. Will probably game better than my 10th gen intel soc ultrabook on docked mode too...

As the steam deck was released i fell in love with it and put money aside till i can afford it because it finally gave me the opportunity to play computer games that do not get released on consoles and put computer & console gaming into one! now i can not only play games on a handheld console but also play games that do not have crossplay with my computer-gaming friends. If i would have had a good gaming pc and all that, i most likely wouldn't have bought a steam deck cause i would have been fine playing the games available on the nintendo switch on the go 😱 p.s. love both of you guys' content! 💖

I had a PSP and PSVita back in the day, I’m really hoping Sony moves towards a handheld console after the PS5’s lifespan. I really think the PSVita was ahead of it’s time. When you look at what it had, it was so close to being a game changer like the Switch…it’s sad that Sony didn’t give it the attention and support it deserved. But I totally agree, it’s an exciting time to be a gamer! 😄

The Steam Deck is not a Switch killer. The Steam Deck is for pc-gamers who are secretly jealous of the Switch’s portability, and most Switch users won’t bother with something as complicated as pc-gaming. The only risk I see is that the Steam Deck can do all the retro emulation that the Switch lacks, so a small percentage of Switch gamers might want a Steam Deck to play GameCube and such. And some non-pc gamers might want to try Steam Deck because it promises to just work for a reasonable price, which is much easier than having to choose an expensive laptop without really knowing what you need.

Me and my dad are night owls tho, I deal with insomnia and my dad drives 18 wheelers. We do it in 28 hours going straight thru and only stopping for gas, 3 meals, and occasional bathroom breaks. Good gravy doi love the trip tho. So much gorgeous scenery, so many different types of cities to see, it's one of my favorite things to do every summer for the last 22 years. Switch's problem isn't about being under powered graphically for itself its more being under powered to handle 3rd party titles so it can be an all in one exclusive system. They get away with not being more capable because of retro games and great 1st party games... and the most important thing we have 0 PS5 quality games. New systems is out but every game has lower end and still plays PS4 and Xbox still plays Xbox 1. But the future is getting where they need to get a little boost to handle what's coming. Thankfully new systems play last system games makes this transition slow roll out way more favorable to them. Covid slow down still hitting the industry.

Not everyone buys Switch because they want to play Nintendo games. I guess third and especially indie developers will be more interested in steam deck and switch their focus to that system. So people just go buy pc games directly and not waiting for a Switch port. Plus, games run better too. Nintendo’s interest might be hurt this way.

I love the Steam Deck for games that you can’t play on the Switch. With their most recent proton update, a majority of the jrpgs that had issues with cutscenes not working were fixed. All the YS games work perfectly fine now. All the “Legends of Heroes” games work great. My main purpose for getting the Deck was so I could play certain jrpgs like “Tales of Arise” in a portable space. I can get through jrpgs so much easier on handhelds. The only issue is transitioning from much higher frame rates to lower frame rates on the switch. There legitimately is a transition period where it takes a few sessions for me to get used to the lower frame rates. Then it straight up doesn’t bother me anymore.

They should have presave configs in button mapping section like drop-down menu to select the system you're emulating. Then if is not to you liking you can edit the layouts and save them for each console emulation profile. Additionally you should be able to set a default dock and handheld mode profile that would not change unless in the specific system emulator.

I scrolled down to find a comment like this. It's definitely relocating empty stock, and not transporting client goods. Uhaul isn't a moving company, they don't offer services like that. It's actually in their name, "you" haul your own stuff using their truck, not the other way around. I mean it might be inconvenient to drive out of your way, but 500 or 600 dollars might cover gas for a trip from Texas to Pennsylvania, depending on how big a truck they've got and the gas prices. Rough estimate, of course, I haven't moved interstate in two decades.

I think Nintendo eventually needs to upgrade their hardware. 1st party games like Age of Calamity and Xenoblade can barely run at 30fps without dropping frames. I care more about consistent frames than the graphical fidelity.

Not just better hardware, but I hope Nintendo will give us the complete Switch family line-up: Handheld, Hybrid and TV box. If they put together a cohesive account experience, similar to Steam and better than Xbox, the Switch would definitely be an entertainment/gaming juggernaut that would rival Apple and Google’s devices. They wanted everyone to get a Switch for each person in the household, so I hope they can leverage this plan with hardware that can interact with one another. Another point that Bob kept mentioning, how many people play their Switch in docked mode versus handheld. I’ve heard it’s over half of the base (maybe less) that uses their Switch in this mode. It would make sense to add a TV box (which could be a “pro” model). If this does happen, I think NVIDIA will drop their Shield TV from the market sadly. The account system must be seamless, along with cloud saves, so the experience won’t be interrupted. Valve would be the best to emulate for this process since Xbox’s account system is a bit janky with multiple systems (not the cloud saves though).

The great thing about the steam deck is that it doesn't need to sell a lot of consoles to get games, it gets games cause steam gets them. That was the problem with something like the Vita, it had the hardware, but it didn't sell enough to get games to back it up. Steam Deck solves that issue

I think it really interesting that you talk about the Steam Deck to support running Windows properly so that you could play Valorant but playing Apex just works without issue. Most games like Apex are not supporting Linux natively. Still they run without bigger or even any issues through software (aka Proton and Wine). So I would actually prefer that games like Valorant just get playable on Linux instead of hacking around with Windows on the Steam Deck. Because SteamOS is extremely convenient to use while Windows (in any version) would be really annoying. Why wouldn't you prefer that? Or do you think it's impossible to happen? Because I think the more handhelds and laptops get published running SteamOS or any other Linux distribution out of the box, the more demand will be to access such games without dual-boot, manual installations or hacking around in a desktop operating system designed for keyboard and mouse connected. Not to mention the license cost included getting Windows on it. So for the masses it should be much better if games like Valorant just gets playable on SteamOS, wouldn't it?

I dont agree that we should not blame nintendo for selling underpowered system. No one wants from them rdr2 graphics but their games and even exclusives have very low res and res drops as well as noticebale fps drops. Same applies to indies as well. Here are examples: links awakening, bowser fury open world section, isaac, hades. When I pay $90 in Ontario Canada after tax for links awakening and get that performance on the exclusive game on a gameboy remastered game - thats just a joke. What funny is I played on game pass similar game by indie studio called Tunic and its just better in every aspect and cost me 0 or full price is less than $30. Thats why for me deck all the way. I will only consider switch 2 or PRO if hardware will be decent.

Obviously the Steam deck isn't going to kill the switch, but I would love to see all these handheld options take enough of the handheld market that Nintendo learns from them and fixes all of their very serious issues, so that they can better compete in the market. The more competition the better, I'll always love nintendo, but the value of the steam deck just blows away the value of the switch, and if I had to pick between the two right now I would buy a steam deck, especially considering the steam deck should be powerful enough to emulate a good amount of switch exclusives.

@@thefilmdirector1 an emulator wouldn't even be able to go online at all lol, I certainly don't care about online multi-player on switch that is not why I have my switch at all. The point I was making is a lot of the switch's console selling exclusives like Mario oddessey, Zelda botw, and metronid dread can all be played very well on the steam deck. Switch online service is one of the worst anyway, if you want a console mostly to play online games the steam deck is a much better choice. You won't get banned from using an emulator because you can't even log into a nintendo account on an emulator, if you're gonna leave random rude comments you should have some idea of what you are talking about.

12 months later.. it didnt kill the switch 😂. But I think it should or may in the long run. Nintendo first party games are at points really fun, but the price tag seems too high for games that feel like they could run on a playstation 2. With only a handful of good exclusive games and becoming even more lackluster over the past 2 years, everyone is screaming for an upgrade, but this would only serve the 3rd party games that are already on ps xbox or pc. An upgrade will barely be needed to play breath off the wild. Which is a good game but is not exactly a demanding game. Mario and pokemon are hardly pushing the boundaries of needing anything more powerful. So begs the question, with so little games on switch, 99% of which can be played on a console much better than the switch and now portable with the steam deck. why would you pick up a switch. PC games are far cheaper also (bar xbox game pass)

I had planned on getting a Steam Deck but I don't know if I can justify it. I have a very high end gaming PC (Ryzen 9 + Sapphire NITRO+ 6800xt), a mid-range gaming laptop, multiple Switches, PS4, Xbox One, hacked Wii U with most of library I want installed & a ton more order consoles. I know I'm the target demographic for the Steam Deck but idk if there's anything it can do really that I can't do already. It takes less than a minute to pull out my gaming laptop when I'm traveling and play all the games that are on the Steam Deck and of course I have my main Switch when I want to mobile game. Maybe if I didn't have both the Switch or my gaming laptop than the gap would be filled better with the Steam Deck.

I can tell you the bad things about Steam compared to Nintendo here after many years of use. 99% of steam games do nothing about hackers; yet have achievements which makes it pointless. Secondly, you're not getting a console that plays all the games in one place like many pcgamers think. EpicGames goes out of it's way to make a lot of Playstation titles exclusive; thus breaking having all your friends organized in one place. Microsoft is also quietly creeping up on Steam with it's Xbox/PC titles which are encrypted. Essentially, you're not just switching to a pc platform, you're entering a battle of a plethora of platforms Steam, Gog, Epic, Microsoft, Origin, and more. In the end, it's likely that Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo will get more support since they're on the front lines of attention and less split than the PC. Lastly, I'm not so sure about replacing that L shaped battery in the Steamdeck. I don't know how many third parties are going to assist in parts to make it like a real PC. I like the steamdeck, but I generally avoid games that don't implement anti-cheat. It just takes me out of the games story like people who name their characters X69, or potheadX(number). That stuff feels weird when you're immersed in a good fantasy.

For Nintendo’s next handheld, Valve has set the bar for the minimum tech requirements, the Switch has made so much money that Nintendo can afford to take a loss on the hardware and focus on cranking out games. If the Switch 2 or whatever it’s called isn’t on par with the deck, I see some people being disappointed. You also have to think of 3rd party devs, games are switching focus to ps5 and Xbox so, if Nintendo hasn’t caught up, Switch will be left out. Not that it hurt them obviously.

Steam Deck won't be sustainable, it's just on its start up high right now. It's "neat" but the same people that buys the Steam Deck are the same people that have high end PCs, which they will use 90% of the time when they're at home over the Deck. And powering the thing is horrible considering it draws too much power; your normal portable power bank won't be efficient to charge it while you play. It's not going to have a longer shelf life than a Game Gear, let alone PSP.
