[30 July 2022] This is a brilliant fascinating clip, but I must confess, it feels a little bit awkward seeing Lee's children. Awkward if only because it's a reminder that he did, indeed have children, and a wife: I mean to say that - although he did live like a magus out of a fantasy novel; though in some ways I am sure he *was* a magus, a trickster - Perry was only (after all)(in some ways) just an ordinary man, and the children are a reminder of that. After all, in the common imagination, the stock or archetypal figure of the ancient magus brooding in his tower, pouring over his tomes of ancient lore , casting runes and reciting incantations (and the Black Ark, where Perry - who had endlessly re-read the Bible and the Kebra Nagast - painted icons and hexagrams on the walls, and made and mixed his mad and mystic music, was of course Perry's version of a wizards' tower), is mostly imagined to be childless (and wifeless, for that matter). Prospero may have had a daughter - Miranda - but you can't really imagine Gandalf, or Merlin having children, can you? And what must it have been like for Lee Perry's children, having a mad postmodern magus - an enchanter, an Upsetter and a mutator of sounds - for a father? I suspect that it must have been hard, sometimes; I suspect that there must have been times when they all truly wished they had a baker or a banker for a father; I mean, when they wished they had a plain sensible father, a father who *wasn't* smoking and drinking and raving and ranting all the time. I wonder if any of Perry's children have written their memoirs, now that they've all grown up (and now that Perry's dead). I'm sure they must have tales to tell... P.S: Who is the woman in the clip who sings "No Woman No Cry"? I truly would like to know.
