Yea, the problem is that the movie isn't really a good thesis on that idea. It's pretty surface level commentary... only giving the impression of depth by abruptly cutting to the same scene over and over again. The theme that makes more sense for this film's story was the "obsession with spectacle" angle. But even this wasn't thought out as well as it should have been. The consensus seems to be that he was dialing back the "societal commentary" in this film, however he only really dialed it back in substance. The amount of film dedicated to this commentary is about the same as his other films, it's just short and simple commentary repeated over and over to fill the space. If you're going to dial it back, spend time on the plot or character's. Jupe could have actually been developed instead of just repeating the same experience from his past over and over.

Spoilers… I feel the chimp scene is pivotal to the plot. Jupe witnessed a traumatic accident on set with Gordy feels he had control over the chimp because of their iconic “fist bump”. So that lead him to believe he can tame another creature because he knew how to control it with feeding it horses. Causing the creature to keep returning.

ALSO SPOILERS I saw it as the risk of trying to profit off of dangerous things for entertainment, especially animals. Chimps can be trained, yes, but if something goes wrong it could put lives in danger. And things did go wrong and people died. Now this UFO comes along. Both parties tried profiting off of it. One was doing a live show, and the other was trying to catch a video of it. But because of that attempt to profit off of it, they pissed it off and people died because of it. Hell, even the horse at the beginning that they were using for the trailer got spooked and almost kicked a few people. It was just weird the way it was done in the movie because it was all focused on a character that was killed early on and then that subplot was just done. If that's the message, I get it, but it was weird to just set it up and end it so quickly.

Jupe is a great character. Jupe is The Human That Started It All. In every other movie, he's the corrupt evil businessman who is manipulating events to make money. Here, his is Chris Pratt's Jurassic Park character played to it's logical conclusion: You CANNOT tame wild animals. That's the entire point of the movie.

The issue with his character is that he is gone by the time we start to understand his motive. But I guess that also plays into how unpredictable a creature is, no matter what kind of attempt you make in trying to tame or manipulate it.

*SPOILERS* I think one one of the themes has to do with trying to tame a beast for profit. The showrunners with the chimp tried to do that, but ultimately the beast couldnt be tamed. The only reason I think the kid survived was because the table cloth veiled his eyes and he didn't trigger the chimp. Later on, the Asian kid is all grown up and he's the one trying to tame the beast for profit, but something sets it off and he can't control it. And so the cycle continues until our protagonists figure out what sets it off. *edit* Also, what do the main characters do for a living? They try to tame horses for movies. Did that work out on the Hollywood set? Nope! You can't completely tame a wild animal, even a horse.

*Chef’s kiss* This analysis is the best comment I’ve seen! Spot on! I found it interesting how there was always a ray of hope in the bleakest situations. In the midst of the chimp’s episode, Ricky focused on the shoe that was in a vertical position and it brought a smile to his face in an effed up way. The chimp calming down and trying to do the fist bump explosion before being taken out. Even when his co Star managed to survive the attack and was invited to witness the spectacle. Obviously the chimp attack mentally and emotionally scarred him. He and his wife had a type of breathing ritual before the show. But he still couldn’t tame the beast. Once the beast bit the hand that feeds, the food system became unorganized and that turned the dial to 100! It didn’t even feel like beast was in survival mode. Just in predator mode hunting for sport and asserting its dominance. The Human vs UFO aspect reminded me of the Tiger vs Snake documentary footage that the director was watching. It was interesting to constantly see a human bow his head to another physical entity (non-god). When we consider ourselves the top of the hierarchy here on Earth.

I think Jupe survived because the balloons finished popping and the chimp went back to normal. It’s subtle but the predator eats all those people because the last people to feed it (OJ and Emerald fed it a fake horse it couldn’t digest. It’s like if you gave a wolf a rock in the shape of rabbit and the next time you try to feed it it decides to eat you instead.

Double Toasted are reviewing this movie the way you would review a rom-com ( What you see is what you get). This was not a rom-com. They are missing a lot of the intricacies in the movie. Concentrating on the chimp ; when it's more about the balloons than the chimp. The balloon motif comes back more than once throughout the movie. Actual balloons, balloons shaped things, inflatable figures. It also establishes the fact that dude retires from Hollywood because of an animal going nuts only to go back and still exploit animals all in the name of the spectacle which cost him and his family their life. There's even more than that. I think this movie is as tightly written as Get Out. It's just not going to spoon feed you like most American movies do. Get Out overall is still the better movie even though I still think it is foolish to compare them.
@Cityweaver

I completely agree about the balloon motif, but we can't sleep on the blatant disrespect and infantization we show large dangerous animals, and then blame them when they hurt us. @mpeekay76
@mpeekay76 Жыл бұрын
@@Cityweaver Absolutely. I even love the irony that in the beginning for that commercial, they hire an expert wrangler ( OJ) in order to safely work with a potentially dangerous animal. Someone with experience. They fire him despite the fact that no one was listening to his advice which caused the horse to freak out. So it's not just the lack of respect and self preservation towards the animal but to the expert they brought in for their own safety. I wouldn't be surprised if the chimp handler warned the set's crew about not having balloons on set and they did it anyway. The movie does not work as well without Ricky's story line. His life is marked by the trauma he experienced as a kid, only for him to perpetuate the same mistake as he dies in the name of the spectacle just like the co stars of his 90's sitcom.

@@Cityweaver Well I don't have the writer/ director accomplishments but you could make it a story like build it up from day one of them coming up with the idea for the show, auditions for the family, find out a bit about the chimps used for the show, where they came from, were they mistreated in their upbringing, etc. Then build up to the point when the chimp went from "trained" animal, then heard the balloon pop and went chimp. Focus on the one chimp (because they stated they used two) that ends up turning and kinda foreshadow to the audience ( but not deliberately) that this moment was to happen. Then focus on the TV family, production staff, etc trying to hide and escape this now "murderous" chimp with of course Jup surviving still ( wasn't sure if the TV daughter survived, they never said). But something along that lines maybe.

@@thnzxc Thanks for brainstorming! A lot of people don't put the effort in like you just did, so I really appreciate it! I see that you put a lot of emphasis on the idea that the chimps were abused. The movie really drives home that wild animals shouldn't be treated like pets at all because wild animals are wild and our humanization of them just causes us to disrespect their natures. Like, a chimpanzee is five times stronger than a human, there's no logical reason to put a sweater on them and play with them. Do you disagree with that? Hey, speaking of which did you ever hear that story about the chimp that did the exact same thing to its owner that happened to the girl in this story? Bite off most of her face.

@@Cityweaver Thanks, I appreciate the feedback, I do some story writing on my personal time. Oh I agree. Wild animals are definitely that...wild. We shouldn't try to domesticate them like dogs because they're still wild no matter what. We especially like to play dress up and try to humanize apes just because they resemble humans. But as you know chimps are very strong and very aggressive, they're more aggressive than gorillas, at least gorillas only eat bamboo and other plants. This movie and US kind of make me think that Jordan Peele is a better director than he is a writer. Because he can direct his ass off but when it comes to scriptwriting I think he needs an editor. Saw the film last night with my brother and friends. I'm on the mid to high matinee scale. The first 5 minutes was a good intro, and personally, I felt the 15 or so minutes of setup after the intro was more on a rental side, but after that, my enjoyment picked back up.

I totally get what you mean, but I do like that the first act introduces EVERYTHING the Haywoods are going to need for the film. The tube dudes, the fake horse, the different personalities of the horses, the motivation. Even the stupid Park kids may seem like a diversion but 1) she stole their dad's property, it's reasonable that they'd prank them, right? And 2) they introduce the entire plot point that Ricky Park's business is alien themed. WHY is a dude ranch alien themed?!

I'm surprised that IT wasn't referenced because the alien works almost the same. Except instead of shifting to what people fear, it shifts to what people want to see (UFO).

I do think the true message of the movie is how credit matters especially relates how in the beginning they talked about the unknown footage of the black horse rider that no one knew who filmed it

Even the way people are trying to attribute Jordan's movie to white filmmakers - talking about Jaws and Close Encounters - is reflective of the forgotten black jockey. He is like the jokey, erased from his contribution. This film is not like Jaws or Close Encounters in my opinion and people are just being lazy and repeating what someone else said who didn't get the film.

I kinda thought it was about exploitation (of animals and people) and how spectacle is driving us to kill ourselves . But that’s kinda cool isn’t it? Your read is totally true when I think about it and so is mine. This movie has so many layers and I love reading everyone’s take. This one really has ppl talking and speculating and that’s the mark of an interesting and well made film.

Finally a review that isn't falling all over Jordan Peele with praise. Many people claim there is some cohesive theme about spectacle and society but if you do any analysis of the story, that argument doesn't hold together unless you accept it in the most generic sense. I feel like this movie is a muddy mess of two different ideas glued together. It's like Peele had some good ideas that should have been developed into different films but he couldn't decide how to develop either idea fully. It's a nope for me.

I think the Gordy subplot is extremely important & nuanced. I get that it seems like a waste for a secondary character, but that in itself makes it a bit more eerie, because it's quiet...maybe like...the alien? Stick with me. The Gordy subplot, IN MY OPINION, does the somewhat obvious: 1) it highlights the continued exploitation of animals for entertainment (horses, chimps, aliens) throughout the decades, & throughout the film itself, & 2) it anchors Jupe's trauma & evolves it into a control reflex/God complex. But I think it may also 3) offer another image of the continued dehumanization of Black people within the entertainment industry: how Black people were depicted as monkeys within political cartoons, & the use of Black face (from the Vaudeville days, up until maybe a decade ago, if that...when was that 30 Rock episode?) as an acceptable means to entertain a mostly white-catered audience. I think the Gordy subplot is wildly poignant & so aligned to what Jordan Peele has said is his mission within the film industry. And that subplot being there, existing like that, in the background, is exactly how white supremacy chills in the background of the entertainment (& basically every) industry.

I definitely feel like the characters not caring for anything else than to take the perfect picture is part of the social commentary Jordan is trying to display but at the same time, it's not needed cuz it's not that kind of movie that needs a message. It's okay to be a big dumb alien movie, it works in some cases but Jordan felt it necessary to add his signature elements and it doesn't translate as well as it does in his other films.

I saw it more as an other big monster or treasure movies they always end up destroying the evidence of an existing “like the real treasure is was the experience and you survived” but they make sure to let us know these characters are broke and need the money So you were also rooting for the characters to get the win for themselves. “We gonna get that OPRAH”

I hope you revisit this movie because it is so prime for in-depth discussions. The chimp back story tackles multiple tasks: 1) helping the audience remember that what they are witnessing is truly horrific; 2) dealing with wild animals without the proper respect and primarily for our entertainment; 3) seeing if people truly learn life lessons worth learning vs. only moving on to the next spectacle. The movie has a lot of textures and concepts and visuals that saying it compares to some of M. Knight Shyamalan's average movies seems inappropriate. But it certainly is a movie that promotes multiple viewings and considerations to be fully appreciated.
