I carry a plastic grocery bag so I don't have to put trash in the seatback pocket. Gum wrappers, used tissues, used wipes, etc. all goes in the bag during the flight. I allow my seat mates to put their trash in it as well. When the flight attendant comes around to collect trash, it is bagged and ready to go. No more forgotten trash for the next passenger to deal with.

You'd almost think that airlines would start putting liners in those pockets to make it easier for the cleanup crew to clean up and more hygienic and convenient for the next passenger. It might cost a little more but the cost savings and extra bit of class it represents should more than pay off in the long run. They provide toilet seat covers so why not pocket liners?

During Covid I bought two multi pocket gardening vests to replace a purse for long walks and they’ve been wonderful for flying. I fill them with what I need accessible on the flight so don’t have to dig through the personal bag much. I wear the vests under blazers and roomy sweaters when at my destination. So I only bring a little dressy purse for nice evenings out. Otherwise I’m purseless . It’s great freedom and more hidden/secure.

@@mihaelahuban5287 Glad it might be useful for you. There are fancier more expensive multipocketed travel vests which would look dressier for going out or for business meeting trips. My travel is personal so the latter doesn’t apply to me but might be an additional vest option for business attire. Once I’m staying someplace, I don’t need all the travel items so manage with a small wallet in an obscure clothing pocket or small little purse for nice dinners or theater. I use the aforementioned gardening vests for full day escapades and hikes.

Scottevest makes clothing with lots of pockets. I use the same technique of wearing a vest in lieu of carrying a handbag. They also make jackets, pants and other things as well as vests. The vests have hidden pockets sewn into the inside of the vest to thwart pickpockets. Just take it off and throw it onto the conveyor belt when going through security. Well worth it.

I do too. Use them everywhere as it leaves my hands free (unless I am carrying my camera) Duluth vests are great, my husband wears a Scottevest which has that protective shield, and lots of pockets. Both vests have zippered inside pockets where we keep passports. We only take the vests off at airport security where their xray machines can read easilly and in our room. A scarf helps my vest look a bit better, but I accept that I am not a fashion queen... I am NOT quite as vulnlerable

Tip for going through Security, I keep either a Largish Sephora bag, or a small cheap drawstring backpack bag for going through Security; I will throw everything in my pockets, Cell phone, wallet, etc. belt, Passport; into the bag before going through the metal detector at airport check points. The bag goes through the x-ray machine as one of the last items I have going through. This lets me go through the metal detector without any issues; and on the other end, all my personal items I keep on myself are in a bag I can grab and restore to their proper places after going through security. I'm not trying to empty out the plastic bin full of coins, keys, and whatnot at the end with my laptop out and backpack out. I can quickly grab my items as they come through the x-ray machine and move off to a less crowded and less bustling place to put on my watch, belt, wallet, etc... and be more relaxed that I have all my stuff.

Were I ever to be in a crash I could evacuate leaving hand-luggage and still have the basic essentials. Excellent video! A couple of thoughts though from a former biology teacher… If the seat pocket is “germy,” then we’ll pick up germs all over a fabric (porous) “protector” that we’ll then put into our bag. 😳Same for slippers on the nasty floor of the plane. I always cringe when I see people heading to the bathroom in their socks. Some suggest disposable shoe covers (like surgeons wear) that can be discarded rather than sticking germy slippers back in your bag. BTW, Saw a study revealing germs on bottom of shoes and always pack my shoes inside disposable bags. (Fabric shoe bags help but they’re porous.) I save plastic bags that cover toilet paper or that clothes are shipped in or whatever looks like it could serve this purpose. Free is always good but more importantly, it’s a good way to get more mileage before it hits the landfill.

Me, a guy, I'm old school. I travel with a light rain jacket (with multiple pockets, more on that in a sec). I also have my laptop bag (personal item) with my noise-cancelling headphones. My carry-on is the max size allowed, and carry the usual. The old school thing (fashion sense) is my fanny bag. I carry what's absolute essential there, including passports, wallets (one per country), keys, hard drives, glasses, phones, etc. My reasoning is if there's an emergency and we need to leave things behind, the fanny bag never leaves me. The personal item bag might need to be left behind. When I go thru security, I empty my pockets into the jacket zippered pockets, so hopefully I'm metal free when I reach the trays. One thing I'd recommend to look into it, if possible, for the personal item bag is to be able to hook onto the wheeled carry-on but at the bottom "rear", so when it's being pulled across the airport (this is if the carry-on is a two-wheeler), the weight of it is on the other side of the wheel axis and counters the weight of the carry on inclined forward. Just like the airline crew does it. Your wrists will thank you.

I put the things I am going to use in the plane (AirPods, book, journal, pen, wipes, tissue, and the like) inside a medium size silicone bag and I place it where the things for us to read are placed (after a very good inspection before placing it there). Also, it is a good idea to bring a Starbucks bag (small and folded) and once at placed all the food and snacks I will eat in the plane), this way, it is not count as “another” personal item 😉 (these two were suggestions by somebody. After a bad experience landing, which resulted in ear pain and vertigo, a doctor recommended that I take a decongestant or antihistamine during the flight along with using the Ear Planes. This keeps your sinuses clear and helps with maintaining the pressure in your ears. I've used this method since then on dozens of flights, both long and short, and never had had a problem since. FYI- They have Ear Planes sized for children or those with small ear canals.

Instead of a travel blanket, I carry an oversized, but thin, merino wool wrap. I can use it as a blanket on the flight and as a wrap at my destination. I tend to visit cathedrals a lot and in hot destinations the tank tops/camisole type tops I wear are too bare for a church, so I pull out my wrap and I’m good to go. My problem on most flights is being too warm. In addition to the overhead 'ventilation', I carry a folding fan wherever I go. I will now try them. A hack to pass on to you and your viewers: whenever you stay in a hotel or resort that provides slippers, shaving, and dental kits, just keep them and take with you on long haul flights. They save room and disposable after use. Long haul economy flights don’t provide slippers but you can take the ones provided at hotels.

I used a yellow tulle-like mesh that is uber light weight. It comes on rolls about 4" tall at Walmart, etc. I found a light weight, tough nylon ribbon to reinforce/line the tops of each pocket. I have the seat pocket cover you showed. It is so stretchy that it loses its shape. I had thought weight would cause it to stretch down but actually it stretches out. Amazing in practice.... not great in execution. Great tips! I have a very small but powerful clip-on flashlight on my purse that goes with me everywhere. Useful for looking into dark bags or in an emergency. Fresh batteries go in before a big trip. Also, shampoo, soap and conditioners are now available as solid bars. No need for the liquid kind or the plastic bottles. Many brands have convenient travel/sample sizes that are very efficient.

I have a pair of foldable leather slippers that I bought over 20 years ago when travelling a lot for business and still have them for long trips nowaday. They fold in a pouch slightly bigger than my palm , can be cleaned (wash carefully). This is the best thing I would recommend, other than a pair of noise cancelling headphone and a light polar blanket with a zipper than I can use as a sleeping bag in the plane.

This video is definitely masterclass level. Greatest advice ever. Comments, questions: 1) Your ears hurt? Have you covered ear barotrauma (airplane ear) in any of your videos? I think it's great to have decongestant medication in carry-on for when your eustachian tubes close. I think decongestant medication can save your ears quickly if earplugs aren't enough and things go south. Ear pain and ruptured eardrums aren't worth it. 2) Nasal spray/mouthwash. A little bit of betadine .5% before, during, and after flights goes a long way toward killing any bug your nasal cavity could ck up.while flying. I think you covered that elsewhere, yes? 3) How do you like that Tortuga carry-on backpack? Have you reviewed it? 4) What's going on with the slate wall behind you? Camera jumps forward and backward. The wall design looks like some ancient symbol.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 9 ай бұрын
Hey David! 1) Haven't checked my ears, always just figured I have trouble with pressure. And yep, I used to use decongestant nasal spray before discovering earplanes, and I still do if I have a cold. 2) I haven't used nasal spray for this reason, but I've heard about it. Is betadine also a decongestant? 3) I haven't specifically reviewed the Tortuga laptop backpack, but I do like it. It's super durable, and has been great for use at my destination (going to coworking spaces etc). It's barely large enough for my personal bag needs, but I need to carry A LOT of tech so I need more space than most people. 4) The slate wall has a replica of an ancient church in the town center of the village where I'm staying in Bulgaria. Cool, huh?

@@NoraDunn Oh, wow... my worst fear during flying... Regarding 1 (ear barotrauma "airplane ear"), I'd say that it can be a huge nightmare, and I think a lot of people get bad cases of this during flights If your ears hurt during flights, you might have dodged a bullet here so far. I've had a couple friends who ripped their eardrums during flights, and it almost happened to me many years ago, until a person on my flight gave me an antihistamine (Benadryl, I think). It's incredibly painful, and if the eardrums rip, it takes a long time to heal. Not recommended!!!! In a crisis earplugs help but they only get you so far. So I never get on a flight (or for that matter a hot air balloon or glider) without having medication handy for when it becomes an issue. You might think that flight attendants would make this available, but this isn't always the case. Here's a good article on the topic. The medication is an easy fix and it works because it opens up or clears out the eustachian tubes which are used to equalize pressure between your outer and middle ear. Earplanes can't do that, so I think it's worth it to have the cheap but effective nuclear option (medication) handy at all times. In hindsight, a nasal decongestant spray like what you used to carry seems like the gold standard here for adults. www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/airplane-ear/symptoms-causes/syc-20351701

@@NoraDunn oh, wow #2. My other worst fear during flying is inhaling some airborne pathogen and getting sick. It seems to me that the most effective thing one can do (more effective than masks, which have highly limited efficacy) is to use some sort of nasal disinfectant (not to be confused with decongestant) that reaches the nasal cavity where all sorts of things (like coronaviruses) live. There's years of studies (including with COVID) indicating that povidone-iodine (PVD-I, brands like Betadine) can prevent illness and also knock down the viral load if used as a nasal spray and/or mouthwash.. So I always carry Betadine (diluted to well under .5% solution) as a nasal/oral spray, and I use it throughout the flight. Maybe it's a bit strange to do that, but nasal sprays seem like the best defense against catching something while flying. I use the spray and don't worry about who is sniffling in a nearby seat.

Can't wait to see what you come up with for the over seat organizer! I feel like I tried one made for cars, a long time ago. Wasn't too bad but obvi, it didn't quite work right with the tray table, etc. In-flight pouch is a must! I usually use a fanny pack type bag that stays ON me.....then I use S hooks or a carabiner to hang a grocery back or something, off the seat pocket. Then my water bottle or any larger items just go in there. On my last long haul trip home, I even managed to leave the space under the seat in front of me free for my feet! I fly British Airways predominantly, so I use a 12"X16"X5" personal item (PI), which has a crossbody strap, even my backpack one. To avoid using the dirty rear seat pocket in any compromising way, I put the PI under the seat but keep the crossbody strap pulled up and attached to the seat pocket by a hero clip. Easy Peasy to pull up the bag if/when I need access. No bending involved. No extraneous items outside the bag.

One thing that I have to take out of my bag at airport pre-screening is my small collapsable umbrella (the folded wires trigger the x-ray unless you put in directly in the bin). I also pack a very lightweight, waterproof windbreaker and use it in my bag to cushion my electronic/photo gear (double-duty item!), And on the flight, I bring a small multi-USB outlet wall charger with a cord to plug into the plane power outlet- you will make friends by offering seat mates easy access to it by the tray tables. I bought the over the tray table organizer because it seemed like a great idea. Unfortunately the next trip I took EVERY SINGLE flight (5 of them) had the folding tray tables and even though it MIGHT have still fit over that and worked for the pockets, every time I would have used the tray table I would have had to remove the organizer and put it somewhere! Plus that kind of makes the idea of keeping things sanitary on the tray table nil and void. I didn't even take it on the next trip after that as it actually DOES take up a lot of room and weight. Having said all that, I DO intend on taking it with me on my trip to Hawaii in April. I don't recall if Hawaiian Airlines has the folding tray tables but even if it does I'm going to give it a go. Maybe it WILL work! 😀
