I carry a large but quite thin silk scarf (folds up to about the size of your stuffable day pack) - makes a great blanket or wrap if I get chilly. I also keep a garbage bag in my carry-on, just in case I have to check it at the gate or it rains. Cargo bays are notoriously dirty. It is a soft-sided Eagle Creek 20 inch bag which has wheels and detachable shoulder straps and bright blue and I want it to stay that way! It is also fully collapsable which was really handy when my brother would send a shopping list of things to bring from the USA to New Zealand. I just buy a cheap, large bag to fill with his stuff; for the return trip, I have my little Eagle Creek bag and drop the big bag at a local NZ thrift store!

I worked for American Airlines for 15 years back in the latter years of the "Pan Am" days when flying was still a glamorous treat. I was in IT but traveled A LOT for work and pleasure. A log ot your suggestions are great, but here are a few unusual things I still don't travel without. Most is oriented around kids and all together none of it takes up much space and weighs less than a few ounces. #1 is for my use and my comfort. The rest are for others to use to also increase my comfort! A lot of these are in small ziplock snack bags - love those things. Squeeze out ALL THE AIR after filling up or they'll swell like a small balloon at altitude. 1. a snack bag with a few q-tips that I dip in a jar of Vicks. I was on WAY too many flights at the end of the day and got the middle seat between people for whom hygiene was not "a first priority". A little Vicks in the nose occasionally and those people "disappeared". 2. a box of juvenile "ear planes" and a snack bag of unopened packages of hard candies and gum for fussy kids who don't do well with pressure changes. 3. a dozen or so printed pages of word search, mazes, coloring pages, etc along with a small box of crayons like you get at some restaurants (that's where I get mine). You can find stuff to print online. These go to fussy kids near me. 4. cheap, throwaway, wired headphones. I've seen more and more kids who forget to pack headphones or their ear buds batteries died. I'd rather lose a few bucks than hear a kid constantly whine about not being able to play their games or, worse yet, play their games without headphones. 5. 4 1 gallon ziplock freezer bags. They're really useful in regular luggage, but especially so in the carryon because they're a lot better than the tiny airline air sick bags. I put one in my seat pouch before the plane even pushes back because you never know how the passenger next to you will take to a little turbulence. The gallon bags have a bigger "target" to hit. And it's already open. Learned that one the hard way. Same with using freezer bags, not the storage bags (that sometimes leak). 6. if I'm flying international, a snack bag of cheap Bic pens because EVERYONE forgets pens for the paperwork and they're essentially disposable. Black ink is preferred. The flight attendants appreciate it too. 7. Small pack of disinfectant wipes and, just in case, a couple pair of disposable gloves (another snack bag). I wipe down EVERYTHING as I check what will be my "home space" for the next few hours! And in the process have found things that were missed by the cleaning crew during a really fast turnaround so anything like that goes in one of the ziplocks and right to the flight attendants. You would not believe what I've found in the pouches and between the seats. Wallets, passports, watches, jewelry... But I am NOT touching a dirty diaper without gloves! Last, not a carryon, but something I wish all passengers would think about. PLEASE DO NOT TRAVEL IN OPEN TOED SHOES, FLIP FLOPS, ETC. In case of emergency, those are the worst things to have on your feet. And really... Are they any more comfortable than a pair of breathable canvas walking shoes that won't come off your feet in an emergency?

Two neck gaitors ("Buffs"). Merino. And an ultralight inflatable camping pillow. I put one gaiter around my neck, inflate the pillow halfway, and shove inside the gaiter to use as a neck support while sleeping. Works better than any "neck pillow" I have tried, and I have tried many. The other gaiter I wrap around one wrist, then stretch my other arm through it until the elbow is supported like a sling. Keeps my arms crossed and from dangling all over the seat armrests and fellow travelers while I sleep. I like the cozy bundled-up feeling. Of course, the buffs are good for usual buff things: keeping head/neck warm, sleep mask, insulating a bottle, sneezing into, makeshift shopping bag, washcloth, towel, expedient bludgeon, gagging your logorrheic spouse, etc. A page with written contact numbers and addresses in case -HoRroR!- I lose or break my phone. A thank-you note with contact info in case I get separated from my bag and some good soul wants to return it. I'm an optimist. A small bag of peanuts just in case that kid behind me who won't stop kicking the seat is allergic to them. I'm an optimist.

in my personal item, in addition to what you mentioned, I put lightweight, rubber-soled slippers for long hauls where I take my shoes off. I also have a feather pillow that goes in a stuff sack, eye shades, and a warm shawl in case there are no blankets and my legs are chilly. I generally go business class abroad, but I like my own pillow, and I use the airline's pillow to elevate my feet. Also, a small, folding hair brush, and lipstick, business cards. Something I've done for a long time that my travel companions love to copy is I have address labels printed with my photo, name, cell phone #, and email and I stick those on everything that can be separated from me. I am a professional speaker, and I can't tell you the # of times cables and adaptors have made their way back to me because of those labels. I even left my computer on a Singapore Air flight, and the flight attendant called me because it had a label with my cell # on it. Seriously, I put these on *everything* that they will stick to. I am not fond of packing cubes either. I prefer simple zip lock bags, in which I insert rolled garments, then roll the filled bag to get out the extra air before sealing. A simple compression method. I love the zip locks because I can see exactly what's in each bag. I pack them either by type (e.g., socks in one, undies in one, tops in one), or by outfit, if I'm only gone a few days, say to a conference, and I know what I'll wear each day. I open the zip lock the day before I want to wear it to let wrinkles fall out.

I travel with fewer electronics than you, so for me, the following items are must-carry items in my personal bag: change of clothes plus extra socks/underwear (especially if they can double as pajamas in case I have an unexpected overnight layover), toilettries, my prescription meds (and a printout of prescriptions, including for eyeglasses, in my printouts folder), an umbrella, and a pair of shower shoes. During my last flight, my sandals broke in the middle of the airport, so luckily I had a pair of flip-flops in my carry-on! I also carry a plastic/reusable bag (for shopping or wrapping wet items). And for international travel--the most important item is an adapter and some cash!

I added one unusual thing to my personal bag when my kids were tiny (they're full adults now) - a pack of brightly colored pipe cleaners. I could hand a few to a kid so they could make something with them ... or they could watch me make a little animal or plane or other toy. [That was long before IFE had kid programs, and my kids didn't get electronics until they were in high school.] I could use one to make a hook for something light weight. I rejoiced when over there counter meds (Pepto, Imodium, acetaminophen) became available in blister packs, vs bottles!! I even found 12 hr cough syrup in a blister pack. Loved your video and ideas, Nora - thank you! My husband and I are older (over 70). Prescriptions (especially when going somewhere that may require bringing the original bottle, which is hard to learn) are important at our age. Pads, or other personal care items also may be needed in the personal bag. Within Europe, EasyJet is often our carrier (much better than RyanAir) and their under seat requirements are tiny. Like doll sized. You can “upgrade” to have a carryon as well, but they are strict about that as well. They explain the requirements on their website. Would you consider researching and presenting a video on travelers in special categories (like older, those with children, overweight, special needs, etc.)? Even traveling to luxury resorts, or a high end cruise presents some trickier packing requirements. I trust your advice, and am grateful for the work you put in!
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the details about Easy Jet! Indeed, I don't tend to fly budget airlines like these partly because of the restrictions (especially when you can't even pay for the extra weight/space). For me major airlines offer many benefits that outweigh what is (hopefully) a minor cost difference. Benefits including better flight times, and miles & points (which I use to book long-haul flights in business class for less than economy prices, so I'm ultimately saving money!)
@carefulshopper4239
@carefulshopper4239 Жыл бұрын
@@NoraDunn Thanks for the reply, Nora. You might be surprised about EasyJet. I think their flex plan also gives you a checked bag, and you do have the chance to add weight up to a point. Everything is cheaper with them if you do it on the website, and the flex rate still beats major airlines by a lot. We often fly Delta and their affiliated international airlines, but have been pleased within Europe by what they offer and the service on the flights. It’s always a good idea to check various carriers, and we do. Happy travels, and thanks again!

This is a tip regarding prescription drugs: Have your pharmacy put your medications (pill form of course) into a snack size or sandwich size ziplock bag with the official label on it. After I go through security, I take all the meds, vitamins and liquids that I had in quart-sized, zipper-lock bags and put them in pockets all over my photographer/fisherman’s vest to save space in my luggage, which is already jam-packed, and to distribute the weight. (I hate to wear a purse because I’m afraid that I might lay my purse down and forget it.) I’m also disabled and use a cane, so using a “cargo” vest makes carrying a piece of carry-on luggage and a personal item so much easier; fewer things to juggle!

My sister taught me that when traveling with kids, ALWAYS have clean underwear in your bag for both you and the kid. Because kids spill, throw-up etc... she pointed out you can deal with most of what they dish out, but having clean, dry underwear after an accident is a game changer - also nice to change into after a very long stretch to a destination whether it be flight, train or bus.

Great tips here! I would add plasticware. Easy to wash and if lost no big deal. My husband and I go to the tropics yearly. He wears zip off leg pants and his hiking boots. I wear stretchy pants that can be worn at night if it gets cool. I only carry one pair of sunglasses, the slip over glasses ones. I don’t bring ones when wearing contacts anymore. We also pack one extra pair of shorts. I carry on a sarong for a dress. There are so many ways to create one! Maybe one more light dress. The facial wipes in the package. They can be used as hand wipes. The thin panty liners for the ladies. Single use eyeglass cleaning wipes. As been noted, you have to know the weight restrictions of the smaller planes. We’ve gone to Fiji twice diving and snorkeling and bring our own equipment. I carry on my mask and snorkel. My husband will carryon his respirator and stuff. Fiji Airways’ interisland planes will weigh you and your carryon together. If you’re over you’re charged $7 US unless the attendant is not picky 🙂. And don’t forget your hand sanitizer! I think a bottle bigger than 3 oz. doesn’t count toward the quart size bag. Happy travels!

Awesome! You require many more electronics than I, so I'm amazed at how much you can carry. This is more technique than what to pack, but my personal item (I have two different back pack styles) has a trolly sleeve to fit over the rolling carry on handle. I use that "strap" for a non-bulky coat or other piece of outerwear that I may need upon arrival, or get chilly in the airport. My 3/4 length rain coat goes in mine, and it's such a tight fit, it's never fallen out. I also tie my heaviest sweater over my shoulders, and it doesn't interfere with my backpacks or the backpack straps over my shoulders. Then, I don't have to pack my rain coat nor my sweater inside the bag. Both clothing items are okay to be worn, so they're okay on the outside of the bag because I put those in the TSA/security bins while going through.

Remember- You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your personal item bag (or carry on) through the TSA checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. I agree sometimes it is difficult to pack a change of clothes (I use a much smaller personal carry bag) but I will put in a fresh pair of panties. Even if I have to wash (in a sink) and wear for an extra day or two. I also pack at least the bare essentials of what I need for getting ready for the day or night. Toothpaste/brush, comb, moisturizer, minimal make up, deodorant. If the airline puts you up for the night in a hotel usually they have soap and shampoo you can use. If I have room I'll put in a swimsuit, in case I end up in a hotel with a pool or hot tub. In the beading section at hobby lobby you can buy small ziplock bags for your meds/supplements. I also bring an empty gallon size zip lock. This is great if you have something unexpected to bring back with you that may need protection or I have been in lines at the airport when the person behind me has suddenly become air sick. I would prefer to pull out my zip lock quickly for them to be sick in than have them vomit on or near me. Oh and gum, very important for landing. I'll have to try the decongestant spray trick.

I frequently fly with four bags. First is the maximum size allowed for the country and airlines as carry-on. Second is my personal item of maximum size it goes under the seat. 3rd is my medical bag which they never examine. And forth is my large coat in a large bag. You can also if you need carry an umbrella but I don't. In each of these four I put the maximum allowed liquids in the maximum size bottles in a baggie. I stack two of these items on my roll away carry-on luggage and carry the 4th in my other hand. I have been told I have too much then I explain, then they pass me.

Where do you put all those bags?! I’d be really surprised if you were allowed on any International flights with all that. Plus it’s very unfair to those who adhere to the rules. I’ve had a flight attendant ask me to put my small carry on under the seat in front of me, along with my personal item, when someone with three bags got on and they couldn’t fit everything they brought into the overhead bin! Not my problem, frankly.

Instead of a blanket I bring either a pashmina (cold climates) or a neutral colored sarong (hot climates). These can double as extra layers, extra coverage when touring cathedrals, picnic blanket, etc). I over-bought on my last trip to Europe and simply folded my pashmina into a scarf for the plane trip home (and wore two of my jackets!). One less thing to go into the bag.

I have traveled with OTC (over-the-counter) and prescription meds in little zip bags for years; I just make sure to include the label (or flattened box for OTCs) is inside the baggie. For prescription meds I carefully remove the label from the bottle and re-apply it *inside* the little zip bag. In fact, the last time I got travel meds (for a trip to Ecuador: motion sickness patches, a round of antiobiotics in case of a tummy bug, etc.), the *pharmacy itself* actually packaged the meds (separately) in snack-sized ziploc bags with the labels inside - just as I would have done - and I hadn't even requested it! The key thing, I think, is to make sure the labels are included.

Thank you, Nora! I know I will be re-watching some of your videos before I go on a 19 day trip to Europe. Carry-on only. The airline I am traveling on is very restrictive as far as size. But I will make it work. Anyway, I got out a bag that I thought might fit the dimensions and I did I left it sitting by the couch. The next time I went to sit down my foot caught on the strap and I went down and hurt my foot! It’s been two weeks now and it’s finally healing!

@@NoraDunn Is that really possible that prescription meds could get confiscated? I unfortunately have way too many to leave them all in the bottle they came in. I just can’t imagine a TSA agent taking my lifesaving meds from me. I am going on a longer trip soon and planned to put them in tiny ziplock bags to organize them and save space.
