Fleming 65!! She has the safety and redundancy necessary for ocean going with a range of 4000kn at just over 5k, leaving a 10% reserved. The engine room is 4’11”….not stand up space but not cramped either. Everything is easily accessible. She has a draft of 5’ and an air draft of 18’. Her interior layout is beautiful and functional, with easy and safe access to all parts of the ship. A Fleming 65 without question! She’s my dream boat! 💜

Other than doing the loop, the Nordhavn offers so much more room for length with the quality of no worry at sea than others. Sure, you can buy cheaper, but why do that and always want the greener grass. Bad weather coming in unexpectedly...your fault for not planning properly. Yes, taller sail issue, buy again, planning. Lastly, being able see 360 degrees in the pilot house without going outside in bad weather is a Nordhavn. No others give you that advantage.

It is such a pleasant fantasy to have the debate in one's head: Nordhavn vs Fleming. I love it. And I have come to a single firm conclusion many times... it's that one. For sure, no doubt that one. Then 3 months later... nope it's the other one, certainly the other one. It's so beautiful and elegant, it has to be the other one. Then 3 months later... what was I thinking? It's the first one, that one. How could it be otherwise? It's perfect, it's just right. Then 3 months later...

Inland boating is a lot different than open seas. It is true you can do passage making in a Fleming, but Tony Fleming himself says a Fleming can out run a storm. I say, most of the time, but you can get caught. A Fleming 65 displacement is around 80,000 pounds and a draft of 5 feet. A Nordhavn 68 displacement is 200,000 pounds and a draft of 7"' 2". I've been in 45 foot seas in a full hurricane force winds, it is no place for either of these boats. But if you are running in 10-12 foot seas (which is not uncommon in the PNW) I would much rather be in a Nordhavn. Twin engines just give you twice the maintenance than a single. Understand the Nordhavn boats single engines also have a wing engine to get you home. The Nordhavn single engine boats are standard with a dry exhaust. This is the standard for commercial boats for many years. I've crossed the Pacific four times and the Indian Ocean twice. When you are out there you can only depend on your crew, you boat and your self. Nordhavn has a built in stability the Fleming does not have. If you wind up in a storm that rolls you over on you side, which boat will come of on it's keel? I'd put my money on the Nordy.

If you see yourself only occasionally seeing blue water, then get the boat you want. I've crossed the pacific four times and the Indian ocean twice courtesy of the USN. I've been in 45 foot seas and once met a woman who's husband lost his life when a 65 foot motor boat that pitch poled in the off Columbia River bar. KZbinr Super Yacht Captain has a training series :YachtMaster" of videos: "YachtMaster" that spark a lot of thought on this subject.

Gorgeous boats. How capable is the Fleming 65 to handle open water distances? I ask because when compared to a Nordhavn 68 simply eye to eye and nothing else, the Nordhavn looks like a small ship with a tall bow whereas the Fleming rides quite low to the water with a smaller bow. The Nordhavn has ballast and the Fleming as a lower center of gravity. Both amazing boats, but my inexperience leads to this question?

Yep, Nordhaven will answer some emails but I was told if I was serious they need 10K so they know you are serious. Then ask all the questions you want. Seriously, this just happened to me. I get it though. And I was not really offended. If you don't end up buying you get the 10K back. They want serious folks only not looky luys. If 10K offends you you should not be looking at any of these vessels. And that goes for me as well.

I just took delivery on a 2022 Fleming 58. I purchased this boat for two reasons; mid ship master and stand up engine room. She draws 5ft so I’m a little limited in parts of the loop, but I had the Radar Arch hinged. So I can get my Air Draft down to 14 ft. So I can do the whole Erie Canal. I also love the GPS based station keeping option. Also the two docking control stations are a huge plus.

Huge disadvantage. For me, the walk-in engine room is a MUST-have. It's the most important part of any vessel. Now maybe a comfortable crawl as long as you can get to the outboard sides.

The Fleming is a gorgeous boat. That said and recognizing that this might be viewed as a minor detail, but I am underwhelmed by the simple, basic sliding bolts they use to secure the doors on the Portuguese Bridge as well as the door hinge that is used. I have seen a review of Nordhavn 68. The hinge and bolt system used on that Portuguese Bridge door is comparable to what you might see on a safe at a Bank. For a yacht of this magnitude and at this price point, I would expect Fleming to use something far more robust. It doesn't change my overall view of the Fleming 65 and 78. They are superb. I just like to see every decision reflect the same level of pursuit of excellence. Those little hinges fall far below a pursuit of excellence unlike everything else Fleming chose for their boats.

with the new Nordhavn 41 they have hit a home run. 4’6” draft, 11’ air clearance with hinged mast down, two staterooms, 1 head with separate shower, twin diesel engines all mechanical with cable controls for simplicity, ABI stabilizers and a low profile. They come standard with almost everything; the only option is water-maker and with 300 gals. fresh water tank who needs one. No one talks about tankage. The N41 also has 70 gal. grey and black tanks. Look at other trawlers in that size range - some have small tanks. The N41 will do the loop and the Bahamas as well as cross an ocean.

Nordhavn Range is my interest and easy of getting around the Boat. With failing human parts I can not get up from the ground as easy now days. My interest of doing the great loop is not there, but Ocean Crossing is. Why the range is more important. After having a Career on the Sea At Sea is where I want to be, the beach does not cut it.

I'm definitely with you on not having to grovel around trying to do engine checks and changing filters out in my mid-60s. Also I am really not interested in doing the loop somehow it seems like a lot more maneuvering and waiting to get in and out of locks and bridges and tight marinas then I am interested in doing. I feel like I would much rather do coastal cruising. And although after watching Tony Fleming's videos his 65 seemed to handle rough water amazingly I don't think I'm in that price range. I'd really like a 47 or 51 North Haven and some of these boats have amazingly large engines I'm wondering what your thoughts are on turbos? I am also very interested in finding out about insurance on older boats as I'm definitely not in the price range of a new North Haven even if they made 30 ft long. Also does anybody have any input on the trawler sailor that they have out which I think would be the best of both worlds especially adding speed and economy. Although everything I've seen for sale was well over a million.

58 Fleming is the smallest Fleming that has a walk in engine room. But still seems too big for loop. Maybe biggest I'd go on the loop would be Krogan Express 52 or maybe that summit 54. But for deep water and no crew as a couple yeah Fleming 58, with the Nord 59 CP or Offshore 64 as runners up (all for coastal). For a long ocean crossing no chance to refuel, I'd go for something like a Krogan 55 expedition.

I've had some in depth discussions with Tony and the Fleming team and all of them were eager and willing to answer my questions. Nordhavn, on the other paw, never replied to any of the emails I sent with performance and spec questions. That, up front, is a strike against Nordhavn; it doesn't matter how much quality the product has, if the company isn't willing to answer questions it raises concerns about long term support. Then I learned about Aurora, an N120 that was a floating disaster. When Nordhavn's preferred naval surveyor documents the safety and quality failures, and on their flagship model at the time, it's another hard pass. Fleming, however, has been a joy to talk with and I haven't seen anything that calls into question either the quality of the product or their ethics (corporate or individual). Add to that the the founder of the company has done more with one Fleming 65 (hull #1) than any 5 boat owners combined will ever do, and presents it for the world to see...that gets Fleming my vote. Is the Fleming design perfect? No, I would much prefer to see an enclosed flybridge option on the smaller hulls like they have on the 85; it seems to me that in rough seas that the traditional raised pilothouse seems to be a bit "wet" with water splashing on the windows. But...is that something that I will allow to block my interest or eventual purchase of a Fleming? Nope.

I spoke to both and and find them comparable to each other on communication. The 120 was not a disaster. There were a few court cases and Nordhavn won them all, the owner and Canadian taxation was the issue. Watch The delivery video, the owner was on board from china to Vancouver and all was good.

No regrets lifestyle. I honestly would like to hear your opinion as to whether or not the engineers and designers did a good job. You,ve cruised the waters of the loop quite a bit now so i figure you know what's needed to accomplish the loop. I was wondering if it was to much boat?

For loop and inland cruising I'd go with the Fleming 55, for coastal and deep water cruising I'd go with a Nordhavn in the 50 foot range. My choice for doing the loop would be either a Ranger 43 CB or a Fontaine-Pajot MY4S. Unfortunately I keep playing the wrong numbers. The Fleming 55 has an air draft of 16 feet and a draft of 5. Not sure if it could do the Trent-Severn portion, you might have to go through the Welland canal. The rest of the loop should be do-able if you're very cautious along the Illinois and Tenn-Tom waterways. The Nordhavn 41 and 51 both draw less than 4'10" of water, I didn't see any specs on air draft although I know a LOT of the smaller Nordhavn's use paravanes for stabilizers, those will give you an air draft of around 30 feet unless they're deployed, at that point you have an effective BEAM of over 40 feet.

Nordhavn for the money for sure - (pronounced ha vin not hay vin btw) --- But its not just about hard chimes, or how tall on the water - its where the COG is - both boats are designed with stabilizers.. either boat if stabilizers break - will rock in beam seas. I am not sure about the Fleming - but the Nordhavn COG is below the water level due to its design (not just for walk in engine rooms). Some good youtube videos exist on the subject. But for the loop - Nordhavn makes a coastal cruiser that would be more comparable to the Fleming.

Both are fine boats, I guess you have to decide on what type of cruising you want to do, if you want to do the Great loop or coastal cruising Fleming would be the best choice, Cross ocean passage making Nordhavn would be the choice although from what I read the N-41 can fill both choices and Nordhavn is coming out with a new N-51 in 2022 that is fashioned after the N-41 a larger boat with more room and a flybridge.

You won't be able to do the Great Loop on Nordhavn. Nordhavn's draft is over 5ft except for the New Model N41. That is why you don't see Nordhavns. Get a Fleming if those two are your only choices.

This is a questions I have been pondering for years, and as I now am getting close to purchase time, I need to make a decision. THe circle is an after thought for me, my plans would include the Bahamas, lesser antilles, sea of cortez and Alaska but still would like to do the circle without changing boats. I have been researching cruising cats and this is probably going to be my choice but they say the only difference between a sailboat and a motorboat is with the sailboat you only have to motor 90% of the time. To answer your question...NORDHAVN! they are nice looking and built like a tank. Since I started researching trawlers, I just have not seen too many brands I like other than Nordhavn, Northern Marine and Bering...well Daschew but that is a more expensive story. with a 44 ft cat running just one 30 horse engine you can get less than a gallon per hour mileage, the trawlers are much more and it is these numbers I am having trouble finding, a 62 ft Nordhavn gets about 5 gph at cruise speed I am told. You can do the math. Chicago to Bahamas, 2700 miles would cost $8500 at $5/gallon diesel, the cat would be about $850 at .5 gph. The cats have a 4 ft draft generally, you could take the mast down to do the circle but of course these are mass produced boats for the charter industry, atleast the ones I am looking at, and the Nordhavn/Flemings are more luxurious in my opinion. So maybe I could get by with a trawler if I can keep fuel under $20k per year but $2k sounds much better.

I do get it. But your cat is not easy to find dockage for and you can get 3 mpg out of a trawler. Lots of people buy the cats but in other ways you pay for having one. Dockage can be twice the price also.
