My experience is two fold: 1. Reduce # of items you carry along with you. 2. Exhaustion leads to forgetfulness. I keep my water bag (and other stuff) in my tank bag (no back pack) . I pull out the drinking hose easily. This works for me.

I agree with you and I used to do the same with my drinking water, but... I have to carry all my video-making gear now and that takes all available room in my tank plus a rear rack bag.

It's your fist bit trip, right? Don't worry about it then, you'll learn your own approaches to counter that forgetfulness. When I was starting, I used to forget stuff all the time, but it didn't last long as I developed new routines. For example, I noticed that I can't completely overcome the forgetfulness itself - sometimes I still try to ride off with my kickstand down, bless the sensor to shut off the engine when I do. So I needed another approach that makes it impossible to forget. For example, after I put my backpack near the rear wheel once and rode off just like that, now I always hang it on the handlebars whenever I take it off my back, and it solved the problem for me.

It went really well with the backpack you forgot. Drove a taxi in the last millennium and stopped by a gas station and bought something, probably too much to carry, because when I got back to the car, I had to put something on the roof to get into the car. The actual taxi wallet with coins for the equivalent of €500. Of course forgot it and started the drive. Drove quite a distance before I discovered I was missing the taxi wallet. Stopped and got out of the car and it was still on the roof, what luck.

Cause that's a rain suit. Have that way cause wanted to have an extra layer of protection mostly for colder weather since you never know how it will be up north.

I always keep my spare key with me on longer trips like in the backpack that never leaves my side but I guess this might not help you. 😬
