Yes, agreed, "most people’s salaries remain low". HOWEVER, 25% of the Canadian work force ARE getting huge, GUARANTEED, salary increases ....EVERY YEAR ....along with excellent BENEFITS, PENSIONS, and PENSION BENEFITS. These jobs are RECESSION PROOF. 25% is a very large demographic. IT IS THE PUBLIC SECTOR ...ALL ACROSS CANADA ....CIVIC, PROVINCIAL, AND FEDERAL. 100% UNIONIZED. None of these people have any money concerns. They will SAY they do ...of course. Case in point is the B.C. TEACHERS UNION. They very quickly settled last winter (2022) because they were given an increase that directly relates to the current high interest rates ....which will in fact eventually go back down .....BUT THEIR HUGE INCREASES WILL REMAIN. At the end of their "new contract", they will be making almost $120,000 annually ....WITH FOUR MONTHS VACATION FROM DAY ONE. It is the remaining general 75% of the workers across Canada that most certainly did NOT shop at Nordstroms ....and yes, they will be shopping at Jeff Bezos' THOUSANDS of stores for 50% or more, less money. I watch parcel delivery trucks regularly/weekly, at three houses in our area. Been going on for about three or four years now. NEVER seen that before ....and I've been here for over 40 years. The "major shift" HAS taken place .....and Nordstroms is NOT in the picture. I'll also add, immigration that has happened in our neighbourhood, has had existing houses knocked down, and very beautiful large houses built. Everyone taking over a year to build. These are NOT just houses. They are very "high end" mini mansions. But the kicker is, they are NOT occupied all year round. Houses sit empty in the winter months. I hardly ever see anyone around in the yards in the summertime. Very nice vehicles leave the garages and return to the garages. Lawns are NOT kept up. Garden unkept ...full of weeds. In SUMMARY, ....these are very wealthy people who can buy a place anywhere they want. They have absolutely no intention of contributing to the neighbourhood ...or perhaps Canada (?) They have no "Canadian sense of values". They keep to themselves. They are NOT at all "friendly". CANADA HAS CHANGED. IT IS NOT THE NICE COUNTRY IT USED TO BE. .

I don't know about Nordstrom, but Target didn't work here because of Target... Canadian Target didn't have the same products the U.S. Target did. That (and the price) is why Canadians loved shopping at Target when they went to the States. If they had just duplicated what worked, they wouldn't have needed to close up shop.

The real difference between the US and Canada is that they have plenty of people who make over 100k, those that can afford luxury goods. Canada doesn't really have a big upper-middle class. It just has poor renters and rich people who own everything.
@petersmith2040
@petersmith2040 Жыл бұрын
I agree 110% with you. Luxury department stores (e.g. Nordstrom, Saks 5th Avenue, etc…) and luxury boutiques (LV, Gucci, Prada, etc.) rely heavily on the upper-middle class consumers to stay profitable. The poor, middle class, and the rich don’t really spend that much money in the aforementioned stores. The rich in Canada have everything already and don’t spend that much money on luxury goods in the country. They are also frequent overseas travelers and they can always get much better deals when buying their luxury goods in HK, Singapore, London, Paris, NYC, etc… and use them while overseas and bring them back to Canada in their luggages as personal items without having to pay import duties, GST and HST when they return.

@@petersmith2040sure that makes sense outside of Alberta but 5% get is hard to beat even internationally and sure there may also be a smaller percentage of high earners but I also think Canadians prefer to spend their money elsewhere. Why get a luxury bag when you can spend that on top tear ski equipment? Why shop at an expensive department store when the fashion is awful or boring ? in some part Nordstrom was expensive, but there also wasn’t much worth buying, I looked at the clearance sales and felt no temptation to buy anything even when it was 50% off or more

Surprised, but not surprised at the same time. Several US retailers have tried to expand to Canada and later closed their operations in the latter. WHBM and Chico's (same company) also come to mind, having expanded into Ontario only to permanently close their stores there during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's harder to say this for Canadian businesses expanding into the USA (eg. Aritzia), given the larger market of the latter. It's just too bad that Nordstrom couldn't have at least stayed in Vancouver, given the proximity to their Seattle home base.

Canadians living within proximity of a Nordstrom Store in the U.S. will still shop there. I recall a few years ago when Target opened multiple stores in Canada only to close a few years later. Shop at Nordstrom! Now! Most stuff is 40% off. I bought beautiful cuff links there, yesterday, marked down from 80 to 48.

Way too many shoplifters in Canada, and not enought security, could that be one of the reason!? Also people just can't afford it anymore...Canada is no longer a rich country, like it used to be almost six years ago.

Well Canada has 1/10 of the population in the US. We also do not waste our money just to be hoarders, and we do have clothing to survive as well and not just look rich and walk the catwalks LOL Buying clothes that are overpriced because they are a BRAND!!! But for me i will always prefer buying Canadian, not made in China, Turkey, USA etc, and packaged in Canada which will only have a sticker with the red maple leaf on them either. A brand to me means nothing, i mainly look for warm clothes with serves my purpose and needs ;-) People who follows the media pushed clothing etc. You have 3% of the population that can afford overspending on clothes just to look rich, as for me i still wear jeans that i bought 25 years ago, 6 pairs of jeans that i bought for 300$ back then. They are not worn, some shows their age for sure. And my sons showed me that i could get 500$ each for 2 of them on the internet LMAO Now that is a great investment really. Everything today is way overpriced and cheap sadly, but ah well.

You mean Canada greed .... Canada has no ownership and excepts all development from America etc such as Walmart, Costco, Burger King etc when all these American places leaves which they will eventually what happens to jobs..... Canada is a watered down try to be copy cat of USA.... international business is important but Canada has no business acumen; it's never wise to have more international business then your own businesses or in the country will be weakened.... majority of Canadian business was destroyed by Canadian government and citizens that don't support added to 3 years of lockdowns and restrictions
