I bought my boat "backwards". I bought it. Then had the survey done. There were some small issues noted. But, I didnt have to have anything fixed before I got insurance coverage. However, the boat is a 1967 Woodie. I've had to do a complete renovation on every system and space. Paul is right about the costs mounting quickly. I've put over 1500 man hours of my own labor into it so far (at $100/hour per boat yard labor costs) Plus, the work that was done by the boat yard, that was beyond my abilities. However, I know my boat inside out, stem to stern. It's liveable now. But, not where I want it to be for a long trip. After 2 1/2 years of work, I figure that I'm down to about a half million things to do on it.

I didn't get a survey on my last boat and glad I skipped. What I've learned is, you never really know what's wrong with a boat until you live with it for a while - and as we all know - every boat needs something. Depending on the size of the boat, I'd rather save the money for repairs. There is of course a limit to this thinking and a level where you MUST get a survey. If you're going to own a boat, you need to know enough about the potentially obv issues (rot, major mechanicals, electrical etc) to be able to do your own foundational survey.

Survey needed for insurance, also update flares, extinguishers and add beacon/epirb and newer lifejackets. I've heard adjusters look for those items before assessing a claim you have.

Yes they do check all those items

I am a surveyor …. Many of the problems I see are generic and I often comment I could write 80% of the report with out having seen the boat …. The other 20% is normally a significant issue that could be a deal breaker …. As for insurance - you don’t need to do everything recommended by the surveyor - but should there be a loss which could have been prevented if the surveyors recommendations were followed the claim could be denied ….

@@simonpickering2665 Insurance is getting much stricter and I’ve had most issues have to be repaired . But your right, most things are minor but the big ones can be dealt with breaking

I didn't need a survey for the 300,000. Liability and agreed value, for full coverage i would need a survey, Florida, Im in Palatka now

Can you find insurance without a survey? My experience buying 2 boats is that the insurance co will demand one. I enjoy your channel, Thanks

If it’s less than 40 years old then you should be able to. I was told I needed one since I bought a 84 trawler but the previous owners didn’t need one 4 years ago.

Yea, I can attest. My ex cost me about $600k and $1700 a month for the rest of my life. Dash Riprock left her cold about a month after she and I separated.
