It's a lfe-style choice. Wonderful decision for me. 2024 figures in San Diego: 39 foot trawler, bought in 2014 was about 15% the cost of an average house in San Diego County. Due to market craziness, it has appreciated in value which is not something one can count on. Slip and live-aboard fee 1260. Boat payment is 610. Diver averages-out to 200 month but that is for three boats (39', 21' and 17') and includes zinc replacement. Water, cable, internet are free. Sewage pumper is 20 bucks per week if one does not want to move the boat to the free DIY pump-out. Insurance is about 1100/year. Maintenance is easy except for the big diesel... if you are a DIY guy in your house you'll be fine on the boat. Routine diesel maintenance is just as easy as routine maint on your car. Cylinder Head replacement (CAT 3116 -single) cost me 7K but that was due to my letting the previous owner off the hook; I had a stipulation in the contract but I screwed it up. Separate boat and engine surveys are a must! One more money-saving tip: Dual engines get you in the slip easier but I am an avowed single screw sailor. I see no reason to feed, cool and maintain two engines when one gets the job done. Also opens-up the engine room so one can move around a bit. I would also look at forgoing a generator unless you anchor-out a lot. An adequately-sized house bank with inverter is adequate for anchoring out for a few days a few times per year. I'm happy to answer yacht/live-aboard questions... CPO, USCG, ret. 10 year live-aboard.

This is how to make out on living aboard!!!! Also, living in a house or condo isn't expensive in other countries, so you really don't have to live on the boat unless you want to. I always do the math and living in a RV in, say, Mexico, it's more costly than living in a house or condo.

Thats crazy, you pay a diver to rub the bottom of your boat? Get a small hookah and do it yourself, plus they are great for shallow water diving On my PDQ Antares 44, I had a brownies third lung , never needed bottom paint, or haul out to replace anodes. In the eight years I had the boat, I only got hauled out once to repair damage from hitting something on a night passage to Bermuda.
@aquious953
@aquious953 2 жыл бұрын
Wondering why you have a diver dive the bottom so often. I'm a diver, and I might go down twice a year to clean the engine intakes and give the zinks a little wetsanding. I put prop speed on the props and trim tabs and lanolin on the shafts. I stay away from wiping the bottom off because it removes the paint and creates faster bottom growth.

I'm glad you ask that,I was wondering the samething. I agree 100% on it removing the bottom paint,(Of course I found this out the hard way) even doing the work yourself,it's an added expense that's not necessary,I figured just on the hall out alone,I could put that $$$ towards something above the Water line to increase the value of the Craft,that is unless you have a steel or wooden Craft

When I cruised in Mexico the barnacles were a problem. The warmer the water and the more polluted makes this problem worse. You are likely used to clean waters but let me assure you most of the world isn't like that. I dove on my boat weekly to find and scrape barnacles. Buying your boat is actually not the highest cost. I'm nitpicking here, not necessarily criticizing your video, but the largest cost is a loss of economic opportunity. That means you lose the opportunity for your real house to rise in value. Boats sink in value. Houses rise (up and down, yes, but up overall). My house in California netted me one million dollars over the course of 25 years. Good luck finding a boat that will do that, or anything remotely close to that. But don't buy a house right now. Housing is due for a correction due to several factors. Buying two or three years from now will likely make sense. Perhaps the best course of action for someone who wants to live on a boat is to own a house they rent out as well as the boat. Then you're diversified and protected from inflation.
@NoRegretsLifestyle
@NoRegretsLifestyle 2 жыл бұрын
This life style is not about making money, if someone loves there money more then living life i would highly recommend not buying a boat it's not about the money. Personally when I die I won't get that plaque that says I made a million dollars from selling a house LOL, I hope to die dead broke and whats left will go to charity, but I like living this life style for now and giving to charity like I have for the last 5 years or so it makes me feel good.

That's easy to fix if you plan a bit. I sold my house, originally to build another one. The CV happened and all that stopped. So then I thought I would buy one. But now prices are too high. So I took all that money and invested the hell out of it. Spent time to learn how and just did it. Now instead of buying a house, or boat for that matter. I created a very respectable permanent income. This income is substantial enough to buy any boat I may want within a year. That gives me time to arrange all the details. And when I make a move. I will have all the income I need for the lifestyle with no work involved...

Does anyone have any experience with noise in an urban setting on a liveaboard? Specifically, the Tidewater, Va area? I'm in the initial stage of living on a trawler but concerned about noise level and how people deal with it.

Is the insurance something the marinas require, or do you have it for peace of mind? Would you need it if you only anchored in the bay?

Trawlers burn anywhere from 1 gal/hr underway to 20 gal/hr. Figure out your own fuel costs based on your boat's burn rate. His cost is utterly immaterial to yours.

Hello, I'm new here, thank you so very much for your detailed caveat emptor and summary. I read where a lot of states are restricting or banning live aboard options. Have you had difficulty finding live aboard slips? When did you start boating? How did you learn how? Thanx once again, SUBBED ! 🤗⚘️🌹⚘️

Thank you for the information. How difficult is it to get financing on an older model boat - say older than 2005? Also with insurance if you are a newbie is it possible to get even basic Gen Liability?

Not where I'm living. I am nowhere near the water. And I pay at least what he is paying for rent. And I am in a crappy apartment I absolutely hate. But I am preparing financially and will be buying my own boat soon. Haven't decided if I want sail, or a motor vessel. That actually depends on what I decide to do, and if I feel I have the income to support a motor vessel. I'm gonna want to move around a bit...

I just wonder what you do at 10:00 pm when you have cramps and need to get to the bathroom? Do you use your own toilet? Move the boat every week to the pump out and back? Pay to have someone come by? I checked, in California it costs $50 per week for this. How do you get groceries each week, pack them in your hands, use a cart, or backpack? Lots of details you aren't mentioning about life at the marina.

Mike nothing is easy about living on a boat. we use the marina restrooms as much as posssible and we just drive and pump, it runs the boat and keeps her ready and skills ready at any time.
