Every Captain has their preferences. I don't use auto pilot in restricted maneuvering situations. Because of the close dangers. I was delivering a yacht from Atlantic City, to Stuart a month ago. On the outside, doing 23 knots, in auto pilot. Suddenly, the auto pilot went haywire. The boat took a sudden 90° turn. Fortunately, nothing was close enough to be dangerous. But, it took a few seconds to disengage the auto pilot and regain control, and get back on course. Could have been disastrous if our buddy boats had been traveling any closer.

Capin Paul thanks for info/education content. Slow boat to somewhere.... I am learning what I will be looking for and what to pass on when I am ready to locate a livaboard so thanks for variety of livaboards. My early thinking is have to find the place to park one before buying one; a place that allows livaboard, and has something going on nearby the docks; I am still not sure build or style of boat, however, I see it needs to be able to cruise a bit faster, especially to get away from weather; it must be bigger than 40' with min 3 cabins, no interest in cruising as a solo or even two people, more than a short time/distance; I agree newer tech is vital for safety and for ease of boating.

Explain about the 24 volt alternator ? Does one engine have a 12volt and the other a 24volt or what..?
