We had about 6 people on our street with identical damage to their homes due to flooding (we are no where near the water but had 21 inches of rain in 2 days) and they immediately helped 3 people within days. We are STILL waiting, have gotten a fraction of the money our neighbors got but not enough to actually fix things and it took 4 months. They are just completely random, these people need to get out of there and need help to make that happen ASAP!

I imagine the air quality inside the homes was/is far worse than outside because the chemicals have embedded into all the soft surfaces (carpets, upholstery, clothing, bedding, mattresses, draperies, and possibly drywall etc and continue to off-gas, and there is far less circulation inside a home. Never accept what they offer to buy your home and relocate you for this. They will try to take the cheapest way out and short change you. They need to pay for emotional damage, future medical issues or each and every one of your family. The company will try wording it to cover everybody with one amount but that only screws over the children. Get a good lawyer to help you through getting what is owed to you. You will lose a lot of the initially cash but it's the future medical care payout that is what you are needing.

Every resident could go to the county, and secure ,by legal document, their mineral rights. That way, by retaining said mineral rights, when they sold their house, it would prove that the insurance company, or rail entity, would be "Buying them out" out of the "goodness" of their hearts, with no ulterior motive. Just a suggestion. Learn the rules, and use them against them.

Are they standing near the creek by her house? I wouldn't stand next to any of the water in the area. Due to evaporation and wind, the chemicals can be aerosolized. You may not notice it but prolonged exposure could have detrimental effects. I wish the residents would not go home for at least a few years.
