Ernie here. Hank and I continue to practice our wrestling moves. I feel like I'm learning from a master. Maybe I'll become one myself soon!

Thanks for commenting, Judy, but I'm a Norfolk. See my pedigree at www.norfolkterriertales.com/about/ernie/. I'm pure Norfolk thru and thru. Some Norfolks are born with extra tough cartilage by the ears. My ears were down as a pup, as you see in the earliest puppy pics on my page. As I got older, the tough cartilage won out, and now my ears are up. Since Norwichs and Norfolks share a common ancestry, it happens. Whenever I hear one of the mutts at the dog park call me "wichie", I am quick to tell them you don't see Norwich Terriers taking on Giant Schnauzers like me: www.norfolkterriertales.com/ernie-meets-gentle-giant/ - Ernie

I have a Norfolk and chihuahua mix. His Norfolk genes definitely more dominant. But because he is mixed his legs and neck are longer as well as his body. Hes my best campaign

That's a feisty little mix you've got there. I'm a little on the smaller side, but I'm pretty sure if we had a 2 out of 3 wrestling match, I'd win. I asked Ernie and he said your mix wouldn't stand a chance against Hank, because Hank was a very good wrestler. See you on the trails! -Jaxon

Norfolk and Norwich terriers were once the same breed, they could have either the upright ears or the drop ears. The Norfolk was called a drop ear Norwich in UK Kennel club. After much infighting between breeders they became recognised separate breeds in UK in September 1964, by this I mean recognised as a separate breed by UK kennel club. Dont know what applied with American kennel club. Norfolk and Norwich terriers originate in England. Norfolk is an English county situated in the East Anglia region Norwich is the ancient county cathedral city of Norfolk. Occasionally DNA outs and you get throw backs to drop ears from Norwich terriers and erect ear pups from drop ear Norfolks. Both breeds were the result of cross breeding of various terriers, including the Cairn. Their ancestry includes a cross breed terrier known as a Trumpington Terrier. I live in Norfolk ENGLAND, I have father and son Norfolk terriers. Happy little dogs, no tail docking here, thank goodness. End the arguments folks!

Hello to Lesley from Norfolk, England! Just a little point of clarification: Norfolks don't argue. We wrestle, especially if you're handing out biscuits. From how things look on a map, it's a bit of a long walk to Norfolk in England, but Jaxon and I are up for it if the treats are good enough. Just what can we expect? -Ernie

Good to know. So their heads are too big? Well french bullies and chihuahuas have similar problems but are still popular. Maybe they are matching the taste of more people :/

We got a norfolk puppy for the first time 7 months ago and whilst she is very adorable, inquisitive and playful, she is a handful compared to our other dogs- training her has been v difficult. Apart from that though, you simply can't find a dog that loves children more.

Geoffy - Quick question from Ernie, the Norfolk Terrier. Who do you think stands a better chance of having an accurate understanding of my breed, me (a real Norfolk Terrier) or you, trolling around the interwebs confidently making clueless comments? I'm going to go with me, the real Norfolk Terrier. Prick ears by themselves don't distinguish a Norwich from a Norfolk and vice versa. Some percentage of Norfolks - that is, Norfolks like me - are born with strong ear cartilage and would benefit from taping the ears. For those that want to learn something, take a look at www.norfolkterrier.org/articles_t-z/tapingears01.html. Taping the ears of a Norfolk or a Norwich has been discussed for decades. As the link says "...while many Norfolks set their ears correctly from birth, others need some help, particularly during the time they are teething." Long story short: if you're going to make comments about a breed based ONLY on the direction of the ears, you don't know that much about the breed. -Ernie, a real Norfolk Terrier who grew up in a house without tape

We're both Norfolks. You're probably asking about Ernie, and you can see his pedigree here www.norfolkterriertales.com/about/ernie/ Some Norfolks have ears that stand up as they get older. Ernie's ears were down as a puppy, up as he got older and wiser. Just not as wise as I am. -Hank

Oh dear, somebody else masquerading as an expert. I will try to set you straight. Just because I have prick ears, I am a Norfolk through and through. Some Norfolks like me develop strong cartilage around the ears, and that causes the ears to stand up. I did not have prick ears as a puppy; they just developed that way over time. All of my family is Norfolk, and my brother didn't get the tough cartilage I got, so he does not have prick ears. It's always good to be considerate, which is why I refrained from calling you a mutt. -Ernie (the Norfolk with prick ears)
