I'd say friends, or at least just on super friendly terms. I've visited Japan twice now and easily made friends with guys in the car community (despite not even being able to speak more than a few random Japanese words/phrases). I think many car community fans there are eager to, for one thing meet a foreigner (American in my case), and for another meet someone who is as into car culture as they are, especially JDM car culture. I think for them it's fascinating, and tbh I feel the same way about them; plus, I've become penpals with a bunch of the ones I've met after my trips over Instagram DM's. It's super fun.
