It sounds too commanding to me. I prefer Michael Crawford's and Gerald Butler's versions. Because the Phantom is supposed to be seducing Christine to come to him, not "command" her to come to him with authority...In Gerald and Michael's version, you sense the Phantom's vulnerability and longing for her as he is slyly (yet earnestly) seducing her with his song...It's like a gentle whisper in your ear, beguiling you into a sweet dream, whereas Norm's version sounds just like an angry Mufasa to me. More scary than seductive to my ears. But hey, to each their own, I guess.
@sampeacaml93074 жыл бұрын
Especially when Michael and Gerald deliver the line: "Only then can you belong to me...", they deliver it with such a poignant longing and vulnerability that you can't help but be on their side.

I love having a black Phantom because of the contrast with the pale white mask and the dark skin. It truly gives his Phantom an even more ghostly look. He also is such a great actor that I can always feel the rage building in his voice during the darker songs, especially when he played Javert.

*Ahem* This guy is phenomenal! But he's not the first Black Entertainer to portray the Phantom. The Late Robert Guillaume was the Phantom way back in 1990 I believe. There's scarce footage of him as the Phantom but what is there is on KZbin.
@Elly39816 жыл бұрын
What's interesting is that in the novel, the race and ethnicity of the phantom is not explicitly mentioned so he could have been black, Middle-Eastern, whatever. But people who read the novel way back when assumed he was white so traditionally, the role of the phantom went to white actors.

+Miss Elly Yeah, but he was from a village that would be predominantly white, plus at this time and place, whether it be Paris or that village, black people and white people would have been very segregated if they were even in the same place. It pulls me out of the story because of this, not because I am racist. It has everything to do with being believable by staying close to what is most likely the historical truth. Since it is a story set in the past, at a specific period I mean. Also, Pikachu is very correct in his observation of the Don Juan Triumphant scene... however, for the most part in that he is wearing a hood.

This phantom emits what a lot of phantoms I seen onstage don’t: control. He’s the most dominant and masculine one. And that voice is like actual butter but it’s goes high seamlessly and plunges low with gusto. Yet, you don’t feel like he’s overdoing it. Bravo.

I'm not some sort of connoisseur of the Phantom character, but this is probably the only one I've seen that I really liked besides Gerard Butler. +Maymay LPSFan Sweet and powerful are characteristics of a Lyric Baritone, Lyric Tenor sound like a boy - meaning a sweet voice but childish. A Dramatic Tenor would not sound "like an angel" meaning Lyric Baritones are the standard for these roles. But most of the times, due to the fact that there are a lot of High A (A4), tenors get the role faster.

I love this phantom because of how mature and deep his voice sounds and paired along with sierra is absolutely beautiful

Probably the only one of this planet who thinks this, but I prefer Norm Lewis's singing of this song more than I do Ramin Karimloo's.

+Vikram C It's very close for me, honestly, with Ramin only just pulling ahead.

I started crying. I don't know why but something about Norm as Erik moved me. I could only imagine what it would be like to see his performance first hand.

Best version I've heard of this, hands down, always felt like higher versions lacked a little....oomph. but a rich baritone like Norms hits perfectly

This man plays a WONDERFUL phantom. I saw the original back in the 80's with Crawford and Brightman. And being a singer myself and gifted so i've been told. Seeing that one musical moved me more then the MANY, MANY, others i've seen in NY. It was mysterious, magical, and just one of a kind. So for anyone who has not seen this yet live. PLEASE do yourselves a HUGE favor and go see it. The music will send shivers down your spine and the vocal performances will leave you in tears by the end. TRUST ME on that folks. So again PLEASE go see it...!!!

His rich baratone lends so much depth and makes the high notes that much more....ugh....I don't have the words. I have grown up with Phantom of the Opera, and Norm Lewis's version of this song is my favorite. It has so much depth, and soul, and phantomness (yes, that is a word). His voice is breathtaking and haunting and defies explanation, just like any good Phantom should be.
