Norm is the GOAT. You have to know his style to really appreciate him. He is my #1 followed by Patrice and Burr. He's the greatest talk show guest in history. He plays the dumb guy but in reality he's probably the smartest comedian ever.

I know this video has been out a while, but I've watched a few times. I always have the opinion that anyone who doesn't laugh at 13:20 doesn't truly get Norm. It takes a fair amount of exposure to get there I think.

It’s so true! On news and true crime documentaries, when they interview friends and family of the victim, they ALWAYS say: “Mary was someone you could always turn to” and “Whenever Mary walked in she would always light up the room”. It is as if the production crews always give every family the same script: “Are you the mother? Ok. We need 2 minutes of heartfelt sound-bites from you, to get audience emotionally invested in the story. That way they won’t switch channels as during the ad-break.” “Ok, but I don’t know what I should say. I’ve never been on TV before.” “Just say the usual; you could always turn to her, bla bla bla, she would always light up the room, yadda yadda.” “Won’t audiences think I am being insincere if I use the same lines as the family of last week’s victim” “No worries, this is for American audiences, they won’t connect the dots. We have used those same lines for the past 20 years, and nobody has noticed.”

Norm's older brother Neil Macdonald was an actual newsman for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). Neil was the serious one but sounded a bit like Norm, so it was kind of difficult to take him seriously whenever I heard the news. Also, Neil was often that guy out on the street doing news updates. RIP Norm... we loved ya (even if some didn't want to)!

I think the key to understanding and appreciating Norm Macdonald is that he is purposefully being unconventional. He is playing around with the mechanics of comedy. One could say he is subverting the art form. He is playing around with how comedy is constructed and what can and cannot be said or what can or cannot be funny. It's interesting and once you understand that it can be quite enjoyable.

This wasn't really the best of Norm Macdonald. I saw him one night on the Conan O'Bryan show and he told the funniest joke about his wife I have ever heard. Norm's not for everyone and even those who like him usually didn't care much for him at first. Luckily I get him. He has a bunch of one-liner jokes too but his ability to just string people along and keeping them wondering where he's going with his stories is part of the joke. There's a reason why so many big comedians look to him for inspiration because he kinda grabs jokes out of thin air and can be incredibly funny when he improvises.

the video others suggested is funny but is out of context. I'd suggest Norm on Gotham comedy to start with, I think you'd like that one, or maybe his appearances on Conan. It takes some patience to appreciate him, might seem goofy and dumb but he's very intelligent, by far the best contemporary comedian for me.

Hi, if you're reading this, I understand that Norm's type of comedy not everyone's cup of tea *in the beginning.* I would highly recommend you watch old videos of his appearances on Conan. He always tells really old jokes as his own story and give them his own twist and kill every single time. Conan considers him as his favorite talk show host. David Letterman says, there's no one funnier than Norm. Bill Burr said Louis CK, Jerry Seinfeld consider him the funniest comedian.
