I believe Norm’s deep thinking, truth searching nature was born out of his bleak environment and his struggle in his youth. He took a train as a 14 yr old kid here to Vancouver from the other side of Canada and was homeless here doing terrible jobs. Would’ve been in the mid 70s

I went into rehab 2 weeks before COVID and you can’t have you’re phone there. I asked my Dad (who’s a big comedy fan) to get me Stanhope’s memoir and Norm’s. I was delivered Stanhope’s and Adam Corolla’s which I didn’t read or ask for and then the world shut down. 90 days later my friend took me home and and on my bed was Norm’s memoire with the message of “I already spent 30 grand to save your life, I wasn’t about to give you a masterpiece, and provide you a “cure” when I know you’d listen to Norm more than a very expensive therapist. Hope you liked Corolla.”

There was some online fiction I read about a death experiment: doctors found a way to kill someone, study what happens to their brain or consciousness then revive them in the hopes that they could ask them what they saw/experienced. In the story they "kill" the guy then revive him 7 days later and the subject is completely insane, raving mad and inconsolable. They find out from reading the graphs that while he was dead he experienced thousands of years worth of time in their 7 days. And it was just his consciousness with no vessel in an empty void of nothing. Aware but alone with nothing to attach to. If you ask me, that's a much scarier idea of hell than a bunch of fire and some guy poking you with a pitchfork.

I've had the same feeling. Many fans have. There were moments where it's possible he was giving hints at his cancer or behaving a certain way because of it but unfortunately there's no way to know. The sad realization is that the funniest people are often the saddest. It’s not their jokes or wit, but rather their ability to laugh at the absurdity of life, that makes them a true comic. Existence brings with it a dark reality, but at least laughter can make you feel better about it. The end result is the same, but at least you could feel a little bit better. I love Norm. I listen to the same clips over and over again and i miss him and hate that there will be no more. Now that that qualification is out of the way, his thoughts on science and religion were half baked at best. His arguments, though stated with a thoughtful tone, were riddled with holes. The last host was kind in the way he interviewed Norm without interruption, and responded with great questions. I rememeber listening to this stuff before he died and thought he sounded retarded. It makes me sad to know the context of his faith and his impending death. Who knows, when i find out that my death is in sight, i might adopt the same logicless but hopeful "intuitions" as well.

Yeah you hit the nail on the head with this one. Respect the hell out of the guy, hope he found his peace. However he really fell into some bad logical holes there with religion and this perceived attack on Christianity by atheists that I think is sadly pretty wide spread. Essentially viewing atheists as the caricatures they appear as in movies like gods not dead. People with an axe to grind against god, or what not. After listening to a lot of his talks I think what really at least put him where he was on those topics was his lack of faith in mankind in general, himself included, like when he said he thought it was essentially folly for man to think we can make our own purposes. When talking about how scientists were researching the cosmos instead of a potential afterlife, with hindsight, he comes off as a man very desperate and alone. I think that feeling sinks into some people as they see the end approach. It was right over the horizon for him. So “why are we pointing our telescopes to literal empty space instead?”, he asks. That’s some people’s purpose, Norm. They’re doing what they want and what they love. I hope he loved the things he chose to fill his life with before the end, too.

When Norm was talking about why God put evil in the world I think he right about evil creating good etc. To add to that I think that a world with only good is not good. You need bad times to appreciate the good ones. Also if there is only good free will could not exist. That is why I think if God does exist he would allow evil to exist. A all good world is not as good as what it seems to be. I think I got that from a Jordan Peterson Clip but it stayed with me ever since, because I always wondered if there is a God why would evil/bad things exist.

Norm is asking if you would choose to have the experience if you knew you would never be able to remember it, but I agree with you that the only reason not to choose a potentially positive experience would be if you wouldn't be able to absorb and enjoy the experience in the moment. Maybe Norm is considering the lack of any memory to be a negation of the, in the moment, absorption and enjoyment just for enjoyments sake. He seems to be saying that the experience no longer exists if you can't remember it, but I wouldn't agree with that. Wasn't he promoting or rather approving of the idea of living in the moment, but then choosing to pass on doing just that because he wouldn't be able to remember that month of moments?...??? He did say, though, if I'm remembering correctly, that we live in the past.

l too notice that religious people often try to rationalize something about atheists that isn't true. But it's to be expected. After all, their tendency to try and rationalize things that aren't true, is the very process that allowed them their religious beliefs in the first place.

If you interact with atheists online you’ll see that he’s pretty much spot on for a large number of atheists particularly of the New Atheist type ie repeated references to logic, the idea that all beliefs without empirical evidence are false or irrational, the presumption that theism is false, inability to apprehend that theism is a worldview and religion a way of life rather than an hypothesis or a set of beliefs, straw man reductive remarks like “sky daddy” etc. etc. I’ve had quite a lot of conversations with atheists online and I have noticed these as commonalities.

@@EVSmith-by9noI mean how are you approaching these “online atheists” in these conversations? As I mean I think it’s understandable why some atheist might have a great deal of frustration with theists. Atheists have historically been prejudiced against in the predominantly religious communities, and on top of that from the perspective of the atheists, they are having to talk down other people from believing in things like actual demons and shit existing and being in the real world. Like that’s a hop skip and a jump from talking dragons and goblins existing. It feels as if there is literally a break in reality with theists and to be able to achieve a debate/conversation in good faith, there has to be some consensus on the fundamentals of reality and the world.

​@@EVSmith-by9noYou'll find obnoxious and extreme types in every community. I've also spoken to a lot of horribly condescending and sometimes downright venomous religious people. I'd be willing to admit that it's more common amongst atheist though, as they don't hold themselves to any kind of objective moral standards.

The one time I think Norm is wrong: about science. Seems to not understand that Einstein worked with way more than intuition, and was peer reviewed and both proven right and wrong. He even doubted his own intuition based on the evidence of the time, sich as gravitational waves.

I think he’s correct. If you reflect on scientific method, where do hypotheses come from if not intuition? Call it pattern recognition if you like, but that step of scientific method, of having an idea to test, is a bit mysterious. Einstein tells a story of seeing a worker falling from a roof and he realized that the worker doesn’t feel the pull of gravity while in free fall. Intuition seems like a pretty good word for that realization.
