Yep. Too much attention on the .308 especially as a military round when the 30.06 is significantly more powerful.

Yes. I never thought I'd have a 30-06 rifle, but my neighbor sold me a Peruvian Military FN Mauser, that was converted to 30-06 at the FN factory. Smacking steel has never been so much fun.

Too many fuddy duddies shooting 30.06 these days. All it is really, is a hole in a tube, a capsule of brass, and a piece of metal of a given diameter and length. Don't make it so emotionally complicated. Arguably a more efficient round than both is the 7mm-08.
@justinriley86515 жыл бұрын
if I could only have one rifle it would be a 30-06. but since I can have more than one I have 3.
@seanomeirs83625 жыл бұрын
@@exothermal.sprocket That was my point. I thought of 30-06 as my grandfather's hunting rifle, and my dad's M1 Garand. But my neighbor is too old to use his firearms, so he literally gave me a 30-06 Belgian Mauser. Now I feel obligated to feed it.

Good old 06 is probably the best all around do anything round ever created.....with the lightest bullet weights used it is capable of reaching far off coyotes and not turning them into vapor if your hide collecting or loaded with heavy weight bullets of 220 grains and of the best quality with good shot placement is capable of the biggest nastiest critters on this planet, old Elmer Keith proved it capable of even large elephant many years ago if loaded with proper ammo and precise shot placement was used, it will even hold it's own for some pretty serious long range work, and the recoil is managable for all but the very most recoil sensitive individualls, ammo is everywhere and can be had for really great low prices for plinking ammo up to top notch stuff for anything you could possibly want to do, and if your into reloading for it only your imagination limits the possibilities because the choice of components are nearlly without end as is the rifles that shoot the round...nearly every action/rifle design out there has at one time or another been chambered in 06....yepper lots of love for the 06 for sure.......Thanks Eric and Chad for this video it inspired me to pull out a couple forgotten old friend out of the safe and go blow some dust out of the barrels.

Hello and good evening, I like the looks of those rounds. I read comments on here about how far would it kill. Used to call thirty-ought-six Old Death and destruction. I've owned them since probably the early 70s and killed a lot of deer with them. But I may need to rephrase that. The rifle I called Death instruction was actually an 03 Springfield. It was a hell of an old rifle! But he'll a thirty-ought-six will kill as far as you can hit with it. And as you seen what the damage was to the ballistic gel you are a 30 ought 6 doesn't slow down much when it hits a deer at a reasonable range it just goes through. Those blocks are thicker than a deer's chest cavity. I wished I could find another 03 Springfield, anybody got one at a reasonable price shout at me

packs a punch, that's for sure, but I expect that from an 06. I'm wondering if it will have too much penetration on deer? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.
@BillB235 жыл бұрын
Judging by the gel blocks, a 4 inch permanent cavity through a deer's chest cavity should do the job. As to penetration, if you don't know the backstop don't take the shot. (Unless of course they're shooting back.)
@colsoncustoms89945 жыл бұрын
Considering it's being sold as a "long range" cartridge, I'd have expected it to penetrate a little less at 100 yards and even show some fragmentation, which would imply that it would do better at the 400 yard range. If you take another 700+fps off of that bullet, you're looking at more wasted energy as the bullet zips right through the critter. Dropping the velocity is only going to extend the penetration and in turn, minimize the cavitation.
@colsoncustoms89945 жыл бұрын
@@BillB23 Has more to do with wasted energy than anything. Using this on common sized whitetail at 100 yards is a waste of $ as well. You can get that same result or better from smaller cartridges, especially ones that dump all of their energy within about 16"-20". Shit, 7.62x39 can crumple a deer if loaded correctly, as can 30-30. That being said, those same loads (projectiles) that are ideal for deer, wouldn't be very well suited for something like a big elk.
@BillB235 жыл бұрын
@@colsoncustoms8994 Oh, yeah! In Georgia a shot over 50-70 yds is unusual. Ought six is too much cartridge for anything around here. You might want to go for heavy and slow for brush cutting, but .30-30 or 7.62x39 is about ideal for our game. That Norma load, on the other hand, would leave no doubt about the outcome for the animal you intend to harvest. So many options, so many choices. (sigh)
@colsoncustoms89945 жыл бұрын
@@BillB23 Indeed, that's about the longest shot we have here in western tn, 50-100 yards. Maybe 200 yards across a bean field, but that's not nearly as common and is a pretty long shot for this area. Speaking of the various options, the Speer Gold Dot rifle bullets have been showing some serious promise. There are quite a few guys that have uploaded videos testing them and the results have me impressed. They are bonded like these but seem to expand a little more violently (depending on velocity). I'm just going to go for a head / neck shot this year with the inexpensive Speer 130 grain hp's over some Varget in 308. Should do the trick, and they were about $.14 for the projectile so I can load them up for about $.45/round, maybe less.

Classy rifle. Good dangerous game rifle. The round will work, yet that round might be too tough for a quick kill on deer. Go for the shoulder on small deer to anchor it with that round. Looks good for elk, and for breaking bear shoulder up close. On grizzly. it is mostly shot placement. I'll use 220 grain round nose to make sure it breaks the shoulder and continues through the vitals. .30-30 will do grizzly, if hit in the boiler room, but .30-30 is probably too soft to destroy the shoulder. Of course there's no grizzly down there. You-all are still wearing t=shirts! But I hear you got big black bear.
