Hey Dan, I'm sure the purpose for the ceramic coating is to act as a fire retardant (which you know wasn't functioning as advertised)...so why not fashion a heat shield for the headers like other areas of high temperature in the engine and skip worrying about trying to have someone else make you their guinea pig...just a thought.
@leehearsey4 жыл бұрын
Firstly glad it didn't turn into a proper fire ball, that would have been horrific, but also while I appreciate the ceramic is meant to be a fantastic heat insulator but it will also never see direct flame as per your test, as its meant to insulate the pipe that is getting heated up from the hot gasses flowing inside, could it be you had a small exhaust leak that caused it to catch light before it was fully cured? small leaks tend to act like a jet of fire, any signs of leaks around the gasket/manifold joints? maybe a combination of that and a not amazing coating caused the fire? also appreciate ive never tried direct flame on a ceramic coating either so am well prepared to be wrong, just an idea, great honest video either way

Swain tech coatings does a ceramic coating for most of the NASCAR teams ! it is about 55% effective and is a REAL ceramic ( thicker than .oo5" BTW ! ) and NO it will NOT come off ! ( Or burn ! ) in fact it would have to be ground off to remove it ! ( Jet hot, et all is a PAINT and only about 35% effective ) additionally , we use a very high temp wrap that can withstand 2,000deg F ! so we can expect about 80-95% effective heat blockage and NO it does NOT cause ANY issues w/ headers ! we have used it for 40 years ! ( Any issues w/ wrap ? they are using the wrong type ! ) Yes, header blankets DO work but so does the techniques I just described and they are thousands of $ less than header blankets ! i realize many / most Ferrari owners can well afford header blankets but there are better , more effective ,and cheaper alternatives . so the applicator of the wrong coating did or did not make good paying for the damages and labor ?
@PiDsPagePrototypes4 жыл бұрын
Doesn't look like there's much air flow through that area, don't be surprised if the whole system was running beyond the heat where the coating is rated for, due to lack of cooling air passing outside the exhausts. Under the hood of a classic muscle car, which have the whole motor exposed to airflow underneath, the coating will probably have no issues.

@apriliaracing74 жыл бұрын
Wow! I have never seen that light on fire with a torch before. I know that most ceramic coated headers come partially cured and you have to "break" them in by letting the engine run to operating temperature for around 5 to 10 minutes, letting it cool down and take it for a drive. Which you did... Perhaps the coating wasn't cured enough to where the temperatures of driving made it catch fire. All I know is that is the strangest thing I've seen.

When you showed the headers post coating I thought they looked a bit odd. Almost like the coating process had not been done in the correct stages, it almost looked "thick". Ceramic coated exhausts its almost such a thin layer that its like super thin paint. This did not look like that. I wonder if somewhere along the process someone mixed up 2 different coatings.... applied the wrong one and it looked ok but was just not even the right product.

So it looks thankfully that it really was just the header coating that was catching on fire. Luckily for you it was an area that has lots of heat shielding so the flames really only carried soot everywhere. I bet that company will try your blow torch trick going forward on all the headers they ceramic coat as part of their QA. It also looked like while the coating burned, the moment heat was removed it stopped, unlike a gas fire, so pulling over may have saved the car from a disaster.
