Honestly I think recognizing my hair as wavy is what made me actually like it. When I first started taking care of it as curly hair I was soooooo bombarded with curl envy bc curly hair is so beautiful but I ultimately had unrealistic expectation for what my hair can be. Once I started looking for influencers with wavy hair, looking for wavy instead of curly routines, I realized wavy hair is so beautiful and different too and I'd rather be proud of what I have than hate myself for what I don't

Calling India Bastion’s hair wavy is ridiculous...and, imho, her hair is the type I find most beautiful. Those with tight curls are limited in how to wear their hair, but those with big bouncy loose curls/ waves are the most versatile. I realize we don’t get to pick our hair type, but I feel this whole wavy/curly crap is jealousy on the part of those who have less pretty, hard to manage hair. I think we should all calm down and do what Manes by Mel says...adjust your product to your hair (use less for wavy for example) and just love your hair, and appreciate all curly types.

Growing up my hair was much “curlier” but my adult hair has twice been typed 2C, so I am a wavy. However, until hair typing came along everyone I ever met said I had curly hair. I understand the difference between waves and curls (And I am a OK with being a wavy), But sometimes it’s still hard not to identify myself as a curly girl. It’s been part of my identity for so long.

In my life I got a lot of people say to me that my hair are just damaged curls but that’s not true :( I have wavy hair and I love my hair! It took me quite long to love it because there was a time when I really thought that my hair is really just damaged. But I have wavy hair and and I’m proud of it. So many wavy girls call their hair curly, it’s so difficult to find pictures or videos of people with actual wavy hair. Also what I noticed, many wavy or curly hair person don’t like it when people call their hair wavy, because wavy hair is always put on a negative light. Either the curls are so damaged that they don’t curl up or straight hair is damaged from the beach or something like that. I hope more people will be proud of their wavy hair! In the end it doesn’t matter if your hair ist straight wavy or curly, they’re all beautiful. Thank you so much for your videos, I watch them all.😊

I agree with you on this. The only thing that bothers me is that I have never seen people calling out people with coily/kinky for using the term "curly hair". It seems to be something very specific towards wavy hair that triggers people. I wish I could understand why.
@SuhannaDeSilva
@SuhannaDeSilva 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have curly or coily hair but I *think* it’s because coily hair is a form of very very tightly curled hair (we see it when moisturizing products are added to detangle it). I also know that coily hair was root of the natural hair and subsequently the curly hair movement and community being a thing. I’ve noticed a lot of the “I didn’t know my hair was curly” videos are made by conventionally attractive white women with wavy hair, it could be seen as detracting from a movement that was started to normalize curly and Afro textured hair. Again, I’m not part of these communities and I don’t speak for them, but from what I’ve seen from both perspectives, this could be an explanation.

There will always be jealous women, that’s why. I appreciate all types of curls...they can all do different styles, and are all beautiful. While I can admire a black woman’s tight kinky coils, I will never have that type. Does it make my type 2c/3a hair less beautiful? No! When I meet a woman with any type of curl pattern who obviously took time and effort to make her hair look good, I always compliment her. While I love my hair ( most days) I admire all types of hair styles and textures. Appreciation is much nicer than jealousy...don’t you agree?

YES!!!! I love my waves. Using stylers is to hair like makeup is to skin. All is beautiful, you just use stylers and makeup to enhance that beauty. Also misconceiving wavy hair for curly will likely lead to incorrect products and techniques. This may not only NOT help someone enhance their natural texture/pattern but may not be the healthiest for their hair.

I discovered only last year that my hair is wavy. It's 2a-2b, but mostly 2a, so it usually looked good when I just blow-dried it straight. No frizz or whatever. Air-drying was a little bit of a different story, never dried nice, so I just always blow-dried it. Then I discovered the curly girl method and just tried it out for fun during quarantine and was shook that I've got some texture. However because I couldn't really find wavy influencers I bought a ton of products that didn't work for me and tbh most techniques also didn't work and that was so so so frustrating. I'm really glad I found your channel. It helped a lot and now I'm finally figuring out how to handle my hair.

I understand the premise and I agree somewhat. But…I don’t understand all the hostility and why people get so OFFENDED when you say curly instead of wavy. It’s a basic syllogism: waves are a type of curl but not all curls are a wave. Just like all squares are a type of rectangle but not all rectangles are a square. I get wanting to be technical, but I really don’t understand why people get so mean and aggressive about it.

Actually no one should speak for anyone else. I have 2c/3a hair, and I can assure you I don’t “aspire” to have a tighter curl. What I aspire to is a good hair day when I don’t have crazy hair. Personally I don’t get triggered when someone uses words like curly or wavy. They are synonymous. I prefer to watch videos where the hair is like mine because I need tips on how to maximize my curl type. I used to use products to straighten my hair...which was incredibly damaging. Now no heat for me and I use a few products, and voila! Healthy, easy to live with wavy/curly hair! Thanks to the vloggers.

Even as a kid, my hair was “confusing” because about half of it was pretty straight and the other half was forming curly ringlets without any product! Back then people would still say I’m curly because the ringlets stuck out most. But I think it’s not uncommon for wavies to have that issue (straight and curly/spiral strands… what a dilemma!😅😅) it’s still hard to work out a good routine because I’m always chasing uniformity in my waves.

Great video! I call myself a wavy. People will usually say curly because they often think anything not straight = curly. Part of the issue like you mentioned is also mixed or combination of different textures. The pieces framing my hairline form ringlets whereas the canopy is “swavy ” and the rest (majority) is twisting into chunkier waves.

I feel like I'm always in the middle for these kinds of things. If i go to sleep with damp hair i will wake up with a mess of curls and waves. And some of my hair will show a full on curl that u can entirely coil together (but never starting at the root) and pull and it will bounce back but mostly the top of my hair grows out really dry from the root and will wave or just... be a burden lol... Basically my hair ranges from wavy to curly and I don't feel like i belong in either XD I've never seen anyone with hair exactly like mine either. I just like to go with "curly-ish" as a descriptor!

A wave is a loose curl; waves are part of the curl family. I have mostly 2c curls and have no trouble finding products that work for my hair. If y’all would pay attention to the ingredients, you might too. Do I need a stronger hold in my gel to maintain definition? Yes, but the same was true when I was straightening my hair. If I didn’t put something in my hair, even if it was just hairspray afterwards, by the end of the day my flat ironed hair would become 2a-2b curls on its own. And just hairspray wouldn’t do anything for day2 hair; she would be all loose 2b curls when I woke up next day.

Yes! I think I'm in the minority of wavies in that I knew my hair was wavy since I asked my mom when I was like 5, but I remember that question came up when I was doing one of those fun quiz books that kids do and it asked if my hair was straight or curly, and I was super frustrated because I didn't feel like I fit into either one. So I've known my hair was wavy for a long time, but I still didn't know how to style it until about a year ago, and I still had MAJOR curl envy when I started styling it. I hoped that somehow ringlets would spring from my heat damage-free, chemical damage-free wavy hair just because I stopped using sulfates and silicones (lmao)

Wavy hair is a type of curl tho. It’s a looser curl pattern… You can’t argue whichever way around that. It’s still a type of curl pattern. So I think a lot of people say they have curly hair when it’s wavy because it just makes sense to them to say that. Literally who cares lol. So many people try to gatekeep a curl pattern and I just think they have too much time on their hands. Let’s let people say what they want and use whatever language they want to describe their hair texture and move on with our lives. People who are dead set on trying to correct other people’s language about how to categorize their hair are really doing the most, and probably have too much time on their hands.

I honestly think people should just stop being bitches in the comment section and let things be. It screams to me to just let the bully be a bully by telling us to placate them. I do think that most of us have always wanted a tighter curl pattern. Just as I think a lot of those with a tighter curl pattern want straight hair. I grew up with straight hair, always dreaming of beautiful curls. Imagine my elation when I let my hair air dry one day and I had some spirals. I don't think my cause of wanting curlier hair and not saying wavy is because I say wavy curly, or curly. It's because I've always wanted what I deem beautiful, and all my life I've thought curly hair is beautiful and to finally have it made me FEEL beautiful. Which is something I've struggled with all of my life. It's semantics to me, and sure you could throw that back at me and say well then it shouldn't bother me if I'm called wavy. Which should be true, but growing up there weren't crazies in really life calling out people who have wavy hair saying they can't call it curly. All I ever saw growing up was called curly hair whether it was technically wavy or not. It's just engrained in me to call it all curly, and for the life of me I don't understand what the problem is with that.

Because natural waves often look a little wild. And this ist very frustrating. I think the pictures you mean are these perfect made waves (classic Victoria secret look) which is always the example for perfect wavy styles. The problem ist that you cannot really achieve that look with natural waves. So you often have a natural wavy as the before picture for a Artifical wavy style. 😊
