#1 - don't assume a Stratocaster should be your first guitar. It's so depressing when I'm in GC and the sales guy is telling a newbie that a Strat should be their first guitar. Lots of us HATE Strats, and you might too. Guitars are not one-size-fits-all. The advice in this video is really good --- hold different kinds of guitars and see what you find comfortable for your body. Only then do you worry about how it sounds. If you can't play yet, have the sales person plug in several different types (shapes) of guitars that you find appealing to hear how each one sounds. Pick the one that: (1) you like the looks; (2) you like how it feels to hold; and (3) you like how it sounds.

any PRS SE guitar, although pricey, is the perfect first guitar and would be a guitar you'd never get rid of.

Looks....so true. I have 10 Teles...the FGN Illad is superb in every way....but the 'look' sorta turns me off. It gets little love. I used to criticize G&L headstock snobs....now I get it...sorta. #1 Telecaster, #2 Harley Benton T62DB, #3 Reverb/Sweetwater (I'm a lefty, no guitar shops carry lefties), #4 100% agree!!, 5) 200% agree!!. 6) Small/USED valve amp (or Blues Cube). Yamaha also offers excellent entry range guitars, particularly the Pacifica series (if you prefer the S shape)

I learned guitar on a nylon strung guitar and even took Classical grades. For me, Strats/Strat style guitars are the only electric guitars that have the right geometry for me. Teles and LPs, and 14 frets to the body acoustics all have fretboards that are to far to the left. I’ve only ever owned Washburn electrics.

Straplocks and a good comfortable strap is very important. Also some type of case, whether it's a gig bag or rigid type.

Ask a Luthier what brands he see's the least on his bench and he will tell you PRS. The SE Line has really good quality control and there is a second check in the US before they ship it out. Reverend also does this. When buying your First guitar make sure the neck is comfortable. The neck is the most important part of the guitar. Cheers from Toronto 🍺🇨🇦

And the only thing I would add is that don't be in a rush to upgrade your guitar. Keep it and learn on it. Put the time in to improve your skill/knowledge/chops so that you not only can play but also lean what you do and don't like about the guitar that you have. That way when you do set out to purchase your next guitar - you are armed with what **you** like as opposed to what the marketing tells you what you should like ! As for what should be your first guitar? In my book it should be a Telecaster. Simple, easy to maintain, indestructible and something you will never outgrow.

Personally I wouldn't randomly suggest a PRS SE or ESP LTD irrespective of the fact that they're built better because if the kids are listening to jangle pop or modern rock n roll they might want to go with a Fender/Gibson for tone/aesthetic reasons, even if they're slightly less consistent compared to the former - apart from that the other tips are pretty on point

My first guitar was a 72 les paul custom from my dad and i hated that i pawned it and i got a squier that feels better plus a free crate amp. I was so lucky, not sure why my dad was so mad

If you start on acoustic you’ll likely play only chords …but if you start on electric you’ll likely play more riffs and be able to explore sound effects

I don't think bottom of the market guitars are as difficult to play as they used to be, on the whole. "Beginner" guitars a few decades ago were nearly toys, especially for acoustics... Nowadays most cheap guitars are legitimate musical instruments, and usually they're a setup away from being gigable... Who is making cheap guitars that are complete duds? Am I missing something?

1st acoustic guitar (cheap) = strings SUPER HIGH, TENSION TIGHT, out of tune after the 7th fret. UNPLAYABLE for all players! SOOOO .... buy a real guitar next time, haha. No $200 acoustic is a keeper, unfortunately. EVER. You have to spend $400-500 (+ )....... to get a decent instrument. You'll be glad you did. Thanks Ministry!
