The Vikings regularly attacked coastal regions due to the difficult nature of defending such regions, as well as utilising rivers and stolen horses to raid deeper inland by the mid 9th century.

Despite reports since the 5th Century of the presence of seafaring Germanic peoples both in the Black Sea and in Frisia, and archaeological evidence of earlier contact with the British Isles, the Viking Age proper is characterized by extensive raiding, entering history by being recorded in various annals and chronicles by their victims."The Annals of St. Bertin and the Annals of Fulda contain East and West Frankish records of Viking attacks, as does Regino of Prum's Chronicle which was written as a history of the Carolingian Empire in its final years. Initially, the Vikings limited their attacks to "hit-and-run" raids. However, they soon expanded their operations. In the years 814-820, Danish Vikings repeatedly sacked the regions of Northwestern France via the Seine River and also repeatedly sacked monasteries in the Bay of Biscay via the Loire River. Eventually, the Vikings settled in these areas and turned to farming.

Notes on what has been recorded after The Battle of Aquae Sextia. - "There were surviving warriors, women and children who were to be sold. Roman historians recorded that 300 of the captured women ended themselves and their children." This is in reference to the Tuetons defeat. There is no 'justice' in modern western legal systems. In countries with a (generally) English based adversarial system, it's a business. I have no training or experience in a more inquisitorial system like (Sweden?), however, neither are perfect at finding the truth of a matter. Yes, that is a massive topic on it's own. Very generally speaking, the modern (English) law was developed to move away from the feudal system. Where you would petition to have the King/Queen listen to grievances and then make a ruling. If you were a commoner with no "reputation" and you had a grievance with someone with status, you were screwed. It was also changed to remove the responsibility of punishment from the victim and their family. An offence against an individual was replaced with offences against The Crown. This is a real quick and dirty explanation... What we have now is a convoluted system of laws based upon an "adversarial" model of Prosecutors(Crown) and the accused (Lawyers). Evidence laws were introduced over the years to protect the accused against immoral or unjust practices (Police) or supposedly 'bad' evidence. Eg. Hearsay. The result is the truth has become the victim. This legal system has come full circle. If you are rich and/or famous or a politician, then you get the 'best' lawyers. As history has shown these people rarely see prison. If you are poor and/or have no status, you get the lawyers you can afford. The 'best' lawyers and barristers don't work cheap. It's a business. Laws are made and changed to include 'loopholes' so that there is wiggle room to argue a case. Equals more billable hours. Evidence is traded between prosecutors and lawyers, outside of the hearing, so what is presented in court is a distortion of the truth. This is when the system is actually working. Let alone corrupt police, prosecutors and lawyers fabricating or omitting evidence. Or courts with a soft 'revolving door' policy. It's a shit show. The "Old Ways" might not have been perfect by any standard either, but it was quicker, simpler and much more of a deterrent. My 2c...

In comparison to even the Abrahamic civilization; A man could accuse his wife of adultery to the Judges, the Judges would give her some dirty water. If her “belly swelled” and she vomited or had diarrhea, then she DID in fact cheat and she would be divorced from her husband. Sold into slavery, or stoned to death. If she was unaffected by the dirty water, then God saved her and the husband lied. The husband would be taxed at a higher rate for his lies, possibly stoned himself, lost his land or a piece of his land. Or, nothing would happen to him at all. I think we take the W on this one.

Ǫ and ǫ (O with twig (also known as a caudata or ogonek)) is a letter in the Latin alphabet. In Norwegian, it is probably best known from written Norse, where it represents a low, back, rounded vowel - much like today's Norwegian å, which has since undergone a sound change to [ø] or [ɔ]. Otherwise, the twig often marks a nasal sound, and it is like a nasal o ([õ]) is used, for example in transcriptions of Church Slavonic.

We know the homelands of the Norse were overpopulated, cold and had poor soil. It's well documented that they raided foreign lands and each other. We know from multiple historical sources that they constantly took prisoners who were then sold. Sold in their homeland or in foreign lands. We know at the time that slaves were considered property, and that the belief across the world was that you can't rape property, only use it however you'd like. So the answer is YES. They took slaves and raped them. Just like every other people on earth at the time. It's just that their shenanigans were more well documented by the Britains and Franks than in other areas of the world.

I actually really appreciate this perspective. I feel it even applies to today. Modern women soldiers are at a great disadvantage if caught or made to surrender. Perhaps males may be subjected to rape, but it is probably not as *expected* as it would be for a woman. Now if it's rape or death, most people would choose the former; the hope exists that they'd live to see their loved ones again. But that is from a modern vantage. I'm glad to live in these times.

From the time of American slavery, we have examples of slaves who willingly engaged in sex with their masters in hopes of better treatment and also of rising in value once they gave birth. Thomas Jefferson's famous slave concubine was actually a mulatto who was the daughter of his grandfather. I think if we look at the details of slavery in many cultures we will find situations like this; women who hope to raise themselves in favor through sexual complicity.

Yeah our modern legal systems are awful. So many stories of murders and rapes where you ask yourself why the family of the victim doesn't do anything. Sometimes the criminal even gets a very low sentence or walks free because the police did something wrong, or the offender themself is a minor. Multiple horror stories from Sweden were the offender is even paid compensation because the police did something wrong. Robbing you of any justice for your kin. Almost like we encourage such behaviour because the reward is huge while the punishment might not end up being anything.

Very difficult question for historians, as the position of a woman in medieval society is still a big mystery. However, according to some records, norse women could have had more freedom and alternatives than their vis-a-vis, e.g. in the respect of choosing a husband, leaving him, divorcing, getting married again, and most important inheriting property. But this is applied only to nobility. The life of poor slave cost nothing...and probably female slaves were used for the household and for other "nature purposes" with their children being left bustards..and that's true not only to viking society. It is interesting to look at the genetic data, as if vikings raped women of the nations they attacked these nations would have a lot of "viking genes". In this respect it is interesting to look at England. For long time it was believed that most population of the danelaw are descendants of the vikings, but genetic data doesn't give direct and full evidence for that. The English do share some similar haplogroups with the germanic nations, but that can be argued that these are not from vikings but anglo-saxons. Specific Scandinavian haplogroups in uk can be traced only in Orkney and Shetland, and there is a direct logic in it. Quite intetesting though the genetics of women. Women in Iceland and British Isles (including Ireland) share a lot of similar genetics. But generally the female population of the west and North Europe is very homogeneous with old mitochondrial lineages like their other sisters from the rest of Europe and Middle East.

I disagree with you that because a word was lack in a language that it means it didn't happen. Rape was so incredibly common amongst our ancestors. Rape wasn't seen as heinous by that many. Consider how careful a young girl needs to be walking at night in the 21st century with all the laws and surveillance we have. Or how careful a young man or less-defence man needs to be, entering prison. Now imagine what it was like with far less people on the planet, where you could murder, rape and do whatever you wanted without much consequences. There's no DNA, barely any witnesses, people lived far apart or in small, dark villages. Rape was just an accepted part of life, particularly during war, fighting, disputed etc. Crimes of all kinds were beyond imagination.

@Mill_Mount that simply is not true. Human beings have not "evolved" to higher intelligence potential. If anything, the constant bombardment of westerners to short 10 second clips of indulgent degenerate behavior leads me to suspect that modern humans are so far removed from any connection to natural order that we are far more likely to justify something as vile as rape via moral relativism.
@torstenscott7571
@torstenscott7571 Жыл бұрын
@Mill_Mount IQ is not a measure of literacy, or the use of technology to access knowledge accumulated over the centuries. IQ measures one's ability to problem solve. The human species has not evolved into another species, therefore our inherent problem solving capacity has not changed. Being that the acceptance or refutation of rape is a moral or even cultural consideration, it has less to do with one's ability to solve problems but more to do with the individual's moral compass. There are plenty of intelligent rapists who simply avoid detection and capture, and plenty of morally sound people who are complete morons, so IQ as a factor is something of a red herring. I suspect that you might be arguing from a bias against older cultures, perhaps the notion that societies evolve and progress. I would agree that we can build off of previous cultural and technological achievements, but at heart, we are still the same humans that our ancestors were. Whether the bronze age, iron age, industrial revolution, or today; human beings are still just human beings.

@@Retetop ‘similar to communist regimes’ I don’t believe that. I don’t know how Christianity could introduce a communist regime considering feudalism was a system built off land holdings and private property. When you say ‘inhumanely cruel’, what do you specifically mean? If I remember correctly the Romans enslaved millions, Norse, Germanics and Celts also took many, many slaves, whereas Christian Europe largely adopted a system of serfdom until they became colonial powers, wherein while you are an indentured servant to your lord you have far more rights and privileges than any slave, meaning the incentives to work were made far greater. Also, what do you mean by lack of morality when it comes to rape? How did suddenly when Christianity came into being, a religion which preaches sexuality morality, cause rape statistics to suddenly shoot up? If you’re argument is sexual repression then that’s wrong because Christian Europe wasn’t nearly as prudish as we make it out to be. I get it with Islam because Islam treats women like objects.

Your idealization of this past culture has made you blind to the flaws and fallacies in your thinking. Also, you really don't want to live under a justice system that allows random vigilantes to exact punishments without due process. That's a childish fantasy. You are talking about denying people their basic human rights. I garauntee you are not qualified for that job. Last, you said some really gross things about rape and rape victims like you don't understand the implications of your own words. Without due process? Hardly. The Norse had their law assemblies - the Thing. "Random vigilantes" were actually quite rare. @@Caniswalensis In some ways it was better. Each system has pros and cons, like everything in life. What I'm wondering is why you're so keen to assume ignorance on the part of the video maker when he expresses that it's better for a rape victim's relatives to hunt down and lynch the perceived perpetrator. I mentioned prior that this perception of vigilante justice is taken out of context. Prior to any family justice being carried out, normally matters of justice would pass through the court of the assembly. It typically didn't go beyond that because there was no need. On the rare occasion the family did take matters into their own hands. These rare instances are what you read about in the sagas, for instance. Why? Because it makes for a damn good thriller. Now, it might have been better for the video maker to put these things into context; but an argument can be made that this is simply not the topic of this specific video.
