Saw this last night at AMC theaters. Good movie and I love this theme.

For almost 45 YEARS (!), I have been looking for this beautiful, romantic and dramatic score! Today I am 60, but I still remember, at age 16, how I was in love... unfulfilled...

Bernard Herrmann knocks spots off many of todays film composers and Hitchcock at his best, as he is here, is right up near the the top of a list of the best film directors. There won’t be much argument there……. This particular piece of music, sets a scene for a very romantic interlude on a train. Perfection!

Close your eyes and open your ears. What heavently music by the genius Bernard Herrmann

This piece "train conversations" is not only beautifully and delicately scored, it is nothing less than a romantic masterpiece. In fact, it is too good for a movie, it deserves to be expanded into a concerto. If Hermann had been persuaded to do so, I have no doubt it would then ranked as one of the greatest of the romantic concertos.

Couldn't POSSIBLY AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!! It's brevity is the absolute worst thing about it! It's also as beautiful as ANY CLASSICAL, romantic concerto I've ever heard.....and I've heard an awful lot. So eternally elegant, hypnotic and stunningly beautiful that it is forever HAUNTING. ❤❤❤❤❤

This theme conveys so much romantic longing. After you see the movie and understand the motivations of the character Eva Marie Saint played, you can hear what she feels in this theme. Yet the music is so good that it stands on its own. I saw North by Northwest many times before the film became available on home video and before any recording of this theme was produced on record, tape, or CD, and I used to play the music in my head at the oddest times--including a train trip! This is music that gets under my skin!

Singularly gorgeous, rapturous music- especially at the 1:40 downbeat with the strings full out. You can hear that trademark Herrmann major/minor lilt that he repeated so memorably in Vertigo, just one year earlier.

Although I am a trumpet player, Bernard Herrmann was extremely good at writing music for string instruments. They could be incredibly lush like here and Vertigo, and yet harsh and unsettling in Psycho. It took me a while to appreciate just how good the strings sound in this kind of music.

It's the most beautiful peace of music Herrmann ever wrote.
@TellyWatcher19976 жыл бұрын
Indeed it is a masterpiece and so beautiful but for me it's the music to "The Ghost and Mrs Muir", 1947, with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. The Andante Cantabile is wonderful (Herrman at the height of his powers to move listeners with his music) where Lucy Muir talks to her newly engaged daughter about the dreams she had and how Captain Gregg may well have come back to talk to her....

@@TellyWatcher1997 Why I love him (1 reason), so many varieties, so many genres, so rich. Who else conducted radio network symphony, worked with Welles, Hitchcock, Harryhausen, Scorsese? Spielberg's story of meeting Herrmann last day of his life is hilarious, completely what you want a legend to be. His music will live on for as long as their are listeners.

Never visually dated. These films have far more impact than modern movies. Take it from me. Born in 94, saw North by Northwest at a very young age. My dad had bought the DVD for me to see. Changed my life.

i kind of wish this song was used more in the film, like if they used it when ever Thornhill arrived at a new location, or when the bus drops him off in Indiana regardless, the movie is still a masterpiece

This theme marks the transition of a comedy thriller into a romantic thriller, and also could serve as the second movement of Bernard Herrmann's Symphonic Dances, which his score for North by Northwest really is!

Haven't decided if this love theme or that of "Laura" is is the superior. A dead heat. Dead heat also between this Hitchcock film and "Rear Window". Ah, New York Central RR and others. The post-war golden age of passenger railroads. Now old and nostalgic.

Bernard Herrmann may have been Alfred Hitchcock's musical alter ego. But the influence of Richard Wagner, on this piece, is unmistakable.

@BlueCougar, the Wesendonck were composed as studies for Tristan--that is, they were written before Tristan.

haha, that would be funny...however, not that many directors do cameos now, and when they do they never compare to the wit or difficulty of Hitchcock's appearances. If Hitch were still directing then we could put your category into action and finally get him the Oscar he never won!
