They this do for 3 reasons. First, it tries to give the illusion that DPRK soldiers are so intensely dedicated to the cause that they can perform “superhuman” feats (though to most Westerners it comes off as the same class demonstration you’d get from an 8 year old’s Tae Kwon Do class). Secondly, the chances are much higher that some of their corporals can successfully put their heads through concrete pavers than launching a test missile that won’t malfunction and explode 300 Km off target. Third, they could just be running out of cash and this was the best, cheapest thing they could do with this year’s limited military propaganda budget.

This kinda thing has never appealed to me at all. The discipline and dexterity displayed is impressive- this isn't a "pfffft I could do that!" comment- but the whole "0 individuality, completely subsumed in the role, clockwork solider" ideal actually creeps me out a bit. It's not that I'm scared *of* these soldiers- it's more that I get this visceral feeling that I don't want to be anything like them. The rifle spinning looks silly to me, but the robotically acting like an unnaturally precise thoughtless machines while carrying out mundane actions like walking or turning on the spot gives me the creeps.

There's a level of aggrandizement here. This isn't a critique of our meat grinder. Respect for the dead is all well and good, but this is inseparable from military fetishization. The ritual hinges on absolute, personless adherence to doctrine. If I died in a war and got forgotten, robots looking at an old rifle wouldn't do anything for me, even if I believed in the supernatural
@DieNibelungenliad
@DieNibelungenliad 2 жыл бұрын
@@verager2493 I think you are missing the point. Ofcourse, the dead cant see the ritual, but the living can. Everyone, including you and me and Vaush, will die. When people see that their dead body will be respected and not just ditched in a random yard to be forgotten, it shows that there is worth in putting one's life on the line. This ritual is as much of a recruiting tactic as it is confidence building for the soldiers themselves

I think it is possible to like the Military/Cermonial Rituals without being Fascistic. This isn't Discipline for the sake of the Military, it's Discipline for the idea of all the families over the years who have lost their loved ones to war. It's somewhat nice to know that someone takes that seriously.

Whilst this might be an 'odd take' I personally believe the high training that the soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier conduct is fine to some degree. The whole point of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider is to respect the fallen and those who couldn't be buried in a grave and as such, it is a memorial/mass grave if you wanna be technical about it. I'd personally say respecting the dead is something that should be a well honored and respected celebration, though I will agree that the actions its self can seem strange, it's not like other countries don't apply the same 'zero tolerance' and hyper strict policy to soldiers for other important locations.

Do you really not comprehend the concept of human sentimentality? The Tomb of the unknown Soldier is a monument honoring every Soldier who could not be found for one reason or another. The absolute uniformity and precision is a symbolic representation of the 'ideal' of a Soldier, so in this sense the tomb guard is not a person, but a ceremonial representation of every Soldier in the Army paying respect to those that could not be given a proper send off. They choose the job because in many ways it is a position of great religious significance, even if it's rarely phrased that way. I'm sure the resume update certainly doesn't hurt, but that's the point of all of this. It's a religious ceremony without a formal religion attached to it.

If fascists take power it will be only through the ruthless efficiency of men like these that they are driven back and killed. No amount of debating and protesting will save you at that point, only the realisation of how wars are fought and won.

Vaush doesn't typically punch down like that. He was making a comment about how performative masculinity like that can be juxtaposed with the reality of their situation, as being tall has been and still is a social signifier of perceived masculinity. NK soldiers engaging in these antics are pretty clearly compensatory. It's no different than if he made a comment about the Dragon Ball character Vegeta in the same context.

To be honest, democracy and military never perfectly aligned 1 to 1 in any country's history. Military men are expected to obey, not question except in really specific war crime situations. Democracy is all about questioning authority. Many soldiers find it tough to transition into healthy civilian life because their experience changes them.

Hot take. I don't think the tomb of the unknown soldier is bad. Honestly, it's something we humans do to cope with the loss of those people, and to some extent the guilt of never even bringing their bodies home. In this case, this ceremony is a testement to how we as a society value human life. We feel the need to do something, somehow show that their death ment something. And I think there's something beutiful in that. In a way it's a display of our humanity, that we aren't willing to forget about those we lost, we try to honour them. So in short. I think this ceremony shows us the best of humanity not the worst
