Seth's New England Trails

Seth's New England Trails

Күн бұрын

This footage is from the end of May when I set off to check out a section of the North South trail that was new to me. Mostly dirt road and pavement with some singletrack as well. This run was about become more familiar with portions of the trail I had not run yet.

Poor tree just gave up 🤣. That's a cool rock pointing to Providence. I found it interesting the MA Mid-state trail connects up with the RI trail...always intrigued to see how many of these long distance trails connect up from state to state. Poison ivy...one plant I despise.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's nifty that the North South connects directly to the Midstate. We battle poison ivy constantly on the fringes of our property. That stuff is nasty and just so invasive.

Holy Poison Ivy! Your trails have some good markers at least. Wish ours were better marked at times. Looked like a great run around.

Yikes, I lost the trail I was on today...what a bushwhack that turned out to be! But did eventually find it, but at one point, I don't think Otis wanted to follow me. I'm just glad that there wasn't any poison ivy and we came home tick-free! Beautiful river and stopping just long enough to smell the roses...and a dip was had! Fantastic adventure...Bruce and Otis

Thanks! Poison ivy is nasty stuff. Doesn't seem to affect me much for which I'm thankful. Lord knows we have enough on the edges of our property to cause us trouble if it did!

Good stuff Seth. Do you like the Speedcross 5 shoe? I'm debating that one or the Sense Ride 4, what do you think?
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I love 'em. Didn't actually use them on this run as the pavement would have worn down the treads quick - but they are my go-to shoe for the Whites. They have great grip on all the exposed rock up there. Took a little while to get used to them, I would roll my feet quite a bit at first. But this is my fourth pair of the Speedcross and I'm a big fan at this point.

Biggest problem as I understand it is a lack of legal campsites. So you’ll need to be stealthy. Beyond that’s it good to just sure you’re familiar with the route - I’ve done almost all of it at this point and while those blue blazes are pretty frequent there are a couple sections where they don’t show up as often. How many days you thinking?

A 78 mile trail in RI, is that's gotta be the full height of the state? I am going to look into this trail a bit more, may be able to get my dad on this one with me.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, from the northern border down to the southern shore. It doesn't seem like there are a ton of (legal) camping options on the trail itself though so one must be crafty like a badger if they want to backpack it.

Love hunting out a new trail. I have to be honest, I didn't think RI was big enough to have a single trail of over 70 miles. For some reason, I didn't think it was much more than 30 or 40 miles across. Both Aria and I have been blessed with a relative immunity to Poison Ivy. Practically have to roll around in it to get a little itch. That's a great thing too, because we're bad at spotting it. You missed a prime opportunity to sing a song about the tree that couldn't take it anymore. Could have been an epic.
@RhodySeth
@RhodySeth 3 жыл бұрын
It's certainly not a single trail. The North South Trail is 78 miles and about 18 of those miles are pavement. So they couldn't quite string together the whole thing on actual trail. They basically took a lot of the trail networks on the west side of the state and connected them via pavement or dirt roads. It also doesn't have much in the way of shelters/camp sites so those that hike it over several days need to use their wiles. You are right that RI is 30-40 miles east to west but about 80 miles max north to south. I had hoped to try my hand at running the whole thing at some point. Injuries over the years derailed that but I'm hopeful that I still may be able to attempt it...perhaps in 2022?

@@RhodySeth Well, if it uses a bunch of roads, maybe there's a place to stay on one of those? Maybe one of those farms would let you sleep in a hayloft! I've seen some of your running, I'm betting you could bang this out in 2 days! Wonder if there's an FKT for it.

@@northeastfamilyadventures9186 oh yeah. New England FKT stud Ben Nephew set the supported time just over 12 hours back in 2013. The unsupported time was only just set and then beaten last year. It currently stands at 22 hours 45 minutes.

Had to google poison ivy. I don't think I would survive the American forests very long, ha ha! Here in Sweden ticks and borrelia are the most dangerous things in nature :)

Oh man, we got it all over the place. Luckily I rarely get the rash but one of my friends gets it terribly every year no matter how much she avoids it. It spreads so fast and it's tough to get rid of. I hear goats can eat it. 😆
