It's not often that any event on a preserved railway features traction from all of the 'Big Four' railway companies - and with BR Standards present on the side. However, with some carefully selected visitors, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway pulled it off in style for their 'Autumn Steam Gala'; held over the weekend of the 23rd to the 26th of September.
Visiting from its base at the Didcot Railway Centre, 2999 "Lady of Legend" made only its second trip away from Didcot since being completed in 2019. By contrast, 60163 "Tornado" is no stranger to the NYMR as it made a return visit to the railway, with 8F - 48305 from the Great Central Railway completing the visiting trio of locomotives. An intensive timetable would be featured throughout the event featuring frequent passenger services between Grosmont and Pickering, and a shuttle service to Whitby from Grosmont. In addition, there would be a demonstration freight service woven into the timetable, working between Grosmont and Goathland.
With different locomotives operating on different days across the gala, the basic aim was to capture at least one shot of each locomotive in service on the days attended. Colliery Tank - No29 worked the freight on the 24th, with J27 - 65894 taking over duties for the 25th - while both 825 and No29 didn't run on the 25th. Over the course of the gala, 'Black 5' - 5428 and Class 20 - 20142 would be in charge of the Whitby services.
