For drainage, use floor bars rather than floor grates. I noticed water not getting through floor grates that well these days. Since I replaced them with bars, my drainage problem is fixed. Wall grates are no problem, so you can still use them to close off your magma supply and prevent things to creep into your drainpipes.
@bbgun061 Жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if he should pump the water through a crack to slow it down.
@Piekarz_1 Жыл бұрын
water pumps are mowing water very fast so the dwarves would need a lot more drainage to compensate for that. But there is a much easier fix : water stream comming form pumps should pass trhough a narrow diagonal between two walls. That would reduce all water preassure and allow much less water to flow further into the system compared to how the pumps are set up now.
@CallowG Жыл бұрын
A while back I had a similar mist generator that pumped water into a shaft that fell onto a statue surrounded by grates and it seemed to work OK. I had a cistern under the grates and a pump stack that took the water back up to the top of the shaft. So I think that by only pumping the water around instead of pulling it from an external source at top speed it prevented flooding. Like the pump would suck X units and then Y units + air until I stopped the pump and the space filled back up to X units. I had a floodgate that would open to let in more water when the cistern dropped below 3 far away from the pump inlet.

There was a children’s picture book back in the 90s that had a greenish monster with an amorphous shape (it might have been a person under a blanket, I don’t remember) and it was drawn with weird beady eyes that were sunken into their sockets. I remember being unsettled by it as a child. 11:01 Kruggsmash’s vomit monster looks basically what I remember it was except his is yellow. Idk if anyone else has already said this but a dwarf raised in a non-dwarven civilization might choose to go clean-shaven. That's usually the situation where you would encounter a beardless male, unless you've modified the entity raws to make dwarven facial hair culture more lenient. Or maybe something destroyed the skin on his chin where the beard would have grown? Idk. That being said, I did once have a dog strangely lose all its hair colour info from its bio permanently after suffering some mangled legs and scarring (wild boars are assholes), so it could just be a weird glitch.

You should really try a 1x1 embark. If you never tried it before, it almost completely change how you make a fortress, the biggest change being you have no time to react to ambushes and sieges, since the border is so close to you that you HAVE to take care of defenses before you need them. And the cave can be an endless slaughter, since new things pop up when the last thing dies, and your soldiers tend to always be in reach of the new thing. It's fun and can get FUN real quick, and i'm curious where it would end up as a Krugg vid.

Also, I believe they are working on a build that will utilize more CPU power. Because the core program is so old, it's only utilizing 1 thread from the CPU. If they can get that resolved, the whole slow-down thing will hopefully become a thing of the past. Or at the very least, will greatly extend the length of time you can run any one fortress before it bogs down too much.

Completely feel you on the slowdown of larger forts lol. I'm currently building up a fort that's essentially carved into 3 cavern layers. It's very cool, but also huge and takes forever to traverse. I've tried adding extra bedrooms and barracks for every level, but it definitely takes time and I've since stopped expanding it and digging deeper for now and have been filling out the massive expanse of space that I have. It does look really cool though.

When dealing with water and particularly mist generators, it helps me when I find a cavern layer with a water runoff on the edge of the map. An aqueduct or two leading to the drainage is a must! While grates are relatively cheap. Make them out of expensive materials to boost moods and it looks like if you square off the drains you have in the meeting hall should catch overflow.

A working siege weapon was a big surprise! The siege operator managed to fire the thing and it plowed through a bunch of elfs. Maybe it was the position above that made it work, gotta work that siege weapon in peace at a safe range. Sometimes the siege operator sees an enemy hoard coming and abandons the engine. These things have a huge range compared to crossbows. A couple of these things, and a group of operators so it doesn't rely on a single dwarf, would be the next step. Dwarf beard growth tracking is one reason this game makes me happy. I know different dwarf civilizations will have slight variations of traits and styles, but not that it would include beard styles. All DF players have a... Complicated relation with dwarf nobles and their strange demands. At least the dwarfs are being chained up and now sentenced to a beating. That can eff people up, depending on what the captain decides to beat them with. And at least the trouble-makers are put out of the way instead of bothering peaceful dwarfs.

Avuz whistling nonchalantly along before unleashing the whistling death of the ballista? Savage! Another great episode - the Frog dudes are doing me a concern these days! I wonder if the water woes are connected to the location of the final cistern - is it above the level of the meeting hall? If so, the water might always back out of the 'pipes' into the hall unless those gaps are sealed. I noticed the thing about beards, too when I started recording my DF play and paying more attention to the details of each individual dwarf. I'd put it down to differences between OG DF and Steam DF, but that's the best I got - no idea why that would be so. Thanks for all the work you put into these episodes!
