Northern Ireland’s First Minister has urged the US to bring the same critical approach to pursuing a ceasefire in the Middle East that it once brought to Northern Ireland.
Michelle O’Neill and her power-sharing partner, deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, are on a trade mission to Washington, where they will meet President Biden at events marking St Patrick’s Day.
The pair spoke to Sky's David Blevins in their first joint interview since assuming office six weeks ago.

@@JohnCox-ut3cv 'colonial settler elements'? Ireland was never a colony or part of the British Empire. In fact it was part of the the English kingdom from the 11th Century long before the English / British colonised anywhere. As for the Republic it has been independent since 1921and as for the people in NI they chose to be part of the United Kingdom and still do.

It’s strange seeing this new face of NI, but it seems far removed from the dark days of the past so I think it’s a good thing. They are well spoken, and it seems at least for now, they are genuinely willing to try work together for the better.. and that can only be a good thing given where the place has been for decades.

Absolutely. Northern Ireland has come a long way from the likes of Paisley screaming into a microphone. This is far more palatable to the world and far better all round. Decency, respect and democracy will go a long way.

Inaccurate headline, not reflecting the actual content of the video that follows. Hence, in the comments below can be seen the react ion to the headline - because so many don't read beyond it. Sad. The only other point to be made is over reliance on Foreign Direct Investment comes with a price: with both political (in the broader global picture unfolding ) and economic (developmental ) consequences. Ireland, both states, separately and jointly should pay more attention to what is happening in the EU, from where is capital is flowing in the opposite direction at an accelerating rate (ie in the core EU economy: Germany).

I agree. They are being respectful to each others cultures, they are acting professionally and in line with democratic processes. That can only work out well. There are many in the unionist community who cannot stand to see unionists up there with a nationalist first minister and the fact that she is in Washington on St Patricks weekend (a trip traditionally taken by Irish leaders) seems to stick in the throat of many from the unionist minority. Personally, I just see two women getting on well and doing an excellent job.
