In this video we check out the all time favourite day sack of its time the beloved NI (Northern Ireland) a 30 litre patrol sack that is hard to be rivaled even today. That said Kombat UK have tried to imitate this pack in mutiterrain with fair results.

I bought one of those Kombat UK NI clones a few years ago, loaded it with water bottles, hot squash in flasks and warm clothes for a winter Sunday morning rugby session for my two daughters when they were 10 and 8 respectively, shifted it about 10 metres from the boot of the car to the pitch side, and the seams were splitting. At the same time, I’d bought a couple of Kombat molle MTP pouches to go with the pack, the molle strips started fraying when I moved the pouches for the second time. Needless to say I will never buy anything produced by Kombat ever again. I replaced the pack with a Pro-Force version, my eldest has used it for Scouts and a few other events, and it’s a cracking pack.

Agreed, Kombat UK has some very hit and miss products. I have stated this point in other videos, but as you can imagine it falls on deaf ears, for the Kombat fan boys. My research shows that early clones are pretty solid packs, but production was relocated, and manufactured by out of house production, leading to a much inferior product. The take away from this is, early production products are good, and later re-modelling can be substandard. To assure quality I would buy the original issued surplus only Kombat UK then later introduced a product line for children, and I thought their company lost its way in the market place at this point, and often adults were buying kit only fit for kids play time, in the misunderstanding it was kit for adults. The lesson here is, (If in doubt but genuine ex-issue surplus) and buyer beware.

Purchased a new NI IRR pack years ago for about £25. Good reliable pack but quite a basic carry system. Ended up getting a new 30 Litre Karrimor SF Predator for £30. It now has 6 Molle pouches attached 2x Predator Large Utility Pouches. 2x Predator Omni Pouches and 2 MFH Large Utility pouches. I also now use the Predator 30L pack in conjunction with a Helikon Tex Numbat chest pack as well. Good nostalgic video about the NI pack.

I like the look of all the predator packs, and was contemplating the 80-130 too, until I discovered if I carry my doss bag rolled up inside my bivvy bag, it could be bungeed on top of my 30 ltr NI. I think I will sew on rockets to my 30 NI and know everything thing that is stowed in my bergen fits the NI. Can't beat Karrimor imo, apart from their boots, went through 2 pairs in the same week, both failed with the same issues....bex

brilliant video Bex. I got one and then me mate saw it and the father in law, so I got 3 of them. I noticed this year the dpm is becoming less and less. Amazing bit of kit. I added a sternum strap. Like the bergen it has the tardis effect in getting kit into it. I think at the time there was a lot of R&D and you can see the quality and how robust they are. Cheers Bex

That’s a really good comparison. I have the multi cam kombat uk version and I like the Molle but hate the hood as it’s so stiff it and the pockets are almost unusable. Looking at the original it seems to be slightly bigger particularly in the side pouches. I wouldn’t recommend buying a copy certainly not a kombat uk version.

Hi Bex, the original NI Patrol pack will always trump any Webtex or Kombat clone. The did issue an NI Patrol pack in desert DPM for the desert. Production stopped when the MOD introduced PRI to the mix and then moved to MTP and a different range of packs were created.

Bex, I was looking through some of my old gear recently and came across a 5x7 ft (MVP) Goretex basha sheet similar to my (MVP) Goretex Poncho. Both are IRR DPM. Any ideas if these items were issued kit as there is no NSN? I also have a reversible DPM/Desert DPM Polartec Windblock Fleece jacket (IRR) and a 5.11 DPM Combat Waterproof Jacket (Not IRR) from about 15 years ago. I think these were experimental pre issue clothing items for evaluation but not to sure if these were just commercial items. Any ideas? Have you also tried the lighter weight BCB Crusader Mug/Cooking Mk2 system?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 3 жыл бұрын
I think MVP was a French camo, so may not come under the same nato stock number umbrella perhaps, but not too sure on that. If they were a short line stock I would hang on to them, betcha they will be worth something now, not seen them for many a year now. I have the BCB Mk2 crusader, the cook pot has an indentation in the base, which means it wont sit on all stoves, and food gets trapped in the recess and burns. I use the Mk1 pot, heavier but for superior imo...thanx for watching...bex

NI Patrol Packs are dated by modern standards, but they will keep going almost forever. I had an olive green (kombat uk) clone, ... have to say it was a great pack, fabric and construction was a bit inferior but it was good in comparison to many other civi packs. Given a choice i'd go for the NI Pack, it gets bonus points for manliness. After the NI Patrol Pack, the army started issuing PRI (karrimor) patrol bags (there are several models and several camo patterns) with outshine the NI pack, although it would be an unfair comparison as the PRI packs benefit from all the modern advancements and had a huge amount of R+D spent on them. I gave my NI Pack away (slightly regret it) and sold the clone, upgraded to the PRI patrol pack in DPM, as it can take plce side pouches.

The pri looks to have better multi use functionality for a wild camper. Although I may favour the 50 litre Reindeer, of which I have heard good things, and may try one for the winter, with the intent to stow the maggot strapped to the top. Am I correct in recalling you mentioned you had the reindeer. If so how is it for comfort, and does the weight to litreage ratio work for you. Any tips??...all the best bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor ... I have the wisport 75L reindeer ... it’s probably one of the best civi packs I have used, very comfy for hiking or where you need mobility, I used it on a coastal hike/camp up and down ravines and it was stable and well balanced. I don’t know what the fabric is, but would guess 600D. I was intending to buy a Tasmanian Tiger but got directed to look at the wisport .... it’s very similar in size and design.

Cheers for this info mate. I’m thinking of getting one as my woodland wild camping bag. Do you think it would be comfortable carrying the bag on long hikes?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. The key to comfort on longer distance treks is carry only the basics, (shelter insulation & cook set) extras to consider include rain gear and sundries such as wash kit and illumination. Added to the base weight is water and food, (often the heaviest items). I carry the water on a shoulder sling using a LRRP bottle, to remove that 2 kilos of water from the pack, and off the back, and I replenish food daily from shops (where possible) so I am not carrying say a 3/7 days worth of food... The more you over think your pack contents the heavier and more uncomfortable it will become to use effectively. SIC KIT= S.helter (tarp or tent) I.nsulation (sleeping bag/quilt and ground pad/mat) C.ook set (stove & stove fuel cooking/drinking vessels) Anything else is a luxury..... I no longer take a full change of clothes, but pack only a change of underware and spare T shirt only. These guild lines apply to any pack/ruck..hope it helps bex
