Northern Thailand Road Trip | Chiang Mai to Pai | Pt.1

In today's vlog, I set off on my Chiang Mai to Pai motorcycle road trip. I set off early on my trusty 125cc scooter and headed for the 762 bends on the famous 1095 road, part of the Mae Hong Son Loop. Pai is situated about 128km from Chiang Mai city. I planned for 3 days in Pai on the motorbike, taking in the sights and going to a few tourist hotspots around Pai. Join me on my mini Thai Road trip series.

Wayne, I don't think most travelers expect the cold up north. I froze my a...s off on a scooter, luckily wearing jeans, and I brought a long sleeve and a windbreaker and eventually bought a t during a loop from the city. (yea everything I brought to Thailand) Get out there. See you in Feb.

30 years ago on the minivan off to Pai. No stop. Driver was Crystal M clear. Drove like an absolute nutter. After that always the big Honda 500 to explore the North. Worth the extra 500 a day. Wayne please wear leather motorbike gloves next time. I know I sound like Mum:) Anyway Holland and England playing today. Should be all good! Have fun mate

Those mini van drivers are total nut jobs, I nearly crapped myself the last time I went in one of those! And it's still horrible having to get up at 5.30am to go to work in UK in the middle of winter, nothing changes there!! Looking forward to the rest of the tour Wayne, take it easy!

Great part 1 episode! Next trip to CM we will do a side trip to Pai. Not sure of the distance but would probably take a bus or minibus Would do the ride on a larger road bike, more comfortable and wife wouldn’t complain of a sore arse. Lol. 😅 Looking for to more from you on Pai.

Bugger - should have told you sooner to take Rural Road 3009 instead of going all the way to Mae Rim & the 1095 turn . . . Never mind - next time :) Wish I was in town now to have a beer or six with you. One day we'll manage it. As you said, that stopping point is used by a lot of the mini-vans and buses (it's about halfway), but if you had stopped a little before there are a couple of really good food places on the roadside. You hadn't got into the 'proper' twists by then :D The bottles you thought might be 'fruit alcohol' look like nam peung (honey) - but you have to be careful buying that as it's often not the purest. The early morning mist is one of the things I love about life in the Pai valley at this time of year. Between now and late january the nights and early mornings are pretty cold by Thai standards, and in the morning I like to stand on our balcony and watch the mist burn off a=so that by about 10:00 the sky is clear and the temperature starts to climb again.

Hi Wayne, how did Pai compare to Kanchanaburi and what did you prefer between the two please?

Similar in a way, but totally different. I'll try to explain. Pai is a small mountain town with amazing views and good vibe. It can be packed with young tourists all having fun. Kanchanaburi has a whole different feel, again it's a small town but the history of what happened here gives it a very calm vibe. The tourists that come to see the bridge are more calm and respectful. Kanchanaburi has a special feeling of calm. It also has a nice bar street though where expats and tourist go out at night, the same as Pai. They both have great markets. Both are super laid back towns. Both great places but Kanchanaburi stole my heart. It's just magical.

Last question, promise. Would you recommend Kanchanaburi as a good alternative to Chiang Mai during the burning season?? Or anywhere else you'd recommend as an alternative with a similarish vibe to C M?

@@mathewnavarro2612 No not really, Kanchanaburi will have smoke too. It won't be as bad as Chiang Mai but you will need to go further south. Anywhere below Hua Hin or Da Nang in Vietnam.
