What I don’t understand about not allowing gaming in GW stores is one somebody that you recruited goes to a LFGS to play, and they realize they can get GW official kits at a discount along with proxies and 3-D prints. They’re never gonna buy directly from you again and they might not even buy your products at all.

@@mogwaiman6048 The point he's making is that GW are purposefully undercutting their monopoly by letting 3rd party vendors sell Warhammer at lower prices than GW stores and be right next door. You'd think with a monopoly, GW would make it more expensive for 3rd party shops than the actual GW shops so people are incentivised to buy in GW.
@mogwaiman604811 ай бұрын
@@trajanthegreat2928 It lets GW products reach geographic locations they otherwise might not, and helps encourage and build local communities that lead to more people buying more stuff. GW also doesn't have to pay for more Warhammer stores which come with overhead costs.

They could compete, if they offered extra services. Like a space to spray models bought in the shop. Use of shop paints, training to paint, a bits box, model storage, and dare I suggest selling individual sprues or even breaking up sprues to purchase individual models...

I agree that GW doesn't know what their store identities are supposed to be right now. They run them like they are recruitment centres but they put pressure on the staff like they're supposed to produce the majority of retail numbers. Unfortunately, Canada has many trade stores in every city. There is no way for "Warhammer" store to compete. In truth, I only go to GW for promotions or exclusive product. Pay where you play. GW doesn't even have in-store gaming at most locations so it is fooling for parents to spend their money at GW but be forced to play elsewhere when every trade store has both with cheaper prices.

I play warmachine and battletech and they do have a bit of playerbase cross over with 40k but is definately different. Warmachine players: generally well to do tech worker I.T. nerdy type who works at like nvidia or intel or the government. Battletech: 1980s-1990s military older men who are a bit more on the serious side but not rude in any way.

sometimes i do find it a shame, i dont mind buying from my local GW as the staff are super nice and helpful aswell as games being allowed in store. (newcastle central) i do fully understand people who buy 100% thrird party because GW prices are ridiculous more often then not. just last week i was painting my warhound in store and had a great day out talking to staff and the other hobbyists.

Warmachine and Battletech do have overlapping fans with Warhammer but as with any game in an area once people are playing it it creates a positive feedback loop, this is why you'll see oddities like the fact that in Quebec there is a very active HeroClix scene about a decade after that died out in the rest of North America. Knowing different FLGS across Quebec, Ontario and New England I have an idea of the size of place that store is if the 2000$ minimum GW stock was too much and can say that for a place that small it is the right call to focus on Battletech and Warmachine. On this side of the pond being games that don't include GW products is more then viable, and frankly given the nature of things probably a good idea given the direct competition you have vs if you didn't, and while most would argue you could expand to include it by the time it gets worth it over having a different game or space dedicated to Gunpla, books, manga or a bubble tea stand (yes that's a common thing because it works even some of the larger chain stores do it now) you eventually get to the point where adding it is just a formality after you've added everything else. It's not like in the UK where it's required, though if you are in a hole far away from any GW store and any FLGS that does have them then it may be worth it to be the guy who does in an untapped market.

Interesting GW piece. I had been told elsewhere by another GW store employee that GW's customer service was sufficient to negate the higher prices but, beyond a couple of pots of paint or the occasional impulse purchase, I simply cannot ignore the 20% discount offered elsewhere. This is especially true when spending on multiple models where the discount is enough to cover, essentially, a free model. It's just a shame that these independent discounters aren't able to carry Forgeworld kits as well (typing this while trimming a Xiphon Interceptor)!

*tinfoil hat on*: what if i told you the GW store next to the trade account serves as a poster of the hobby, showing off a flashy brand with lush and well tailored shelf layouts (brand standards are easy to enforce in your own store while you have limited control over the display of the trade account) while also becoming the anchor for the price proposition for the hobby. Customers then see the hobby, see the flashy art and when they see the GW store prices they go "sure, it's ok value, look how cool everything is" but then go to the other shop and go "oh wow the same cool things AND CHEAPER!!!!" and proceed to buy like mad lads thinking they got a bargain deal. GW head office sells product anyway, maybe even more then if both stores had the same price, due to a fake (is it fake tho?) feeling of the customer that they get really good value by buying at a discount. Also 2 places you can find a last pot of nuln oil in case you spilled it 😅
@darko-man854911 ай бұрын
this, i believe, is exactly why GW swapped to allowing trade accounts a few years back and it works. It keeps GW's self-imposed "elite hobby" visage whilst convincing people of good deals on something that is already 4 times more expensive than it should be
@lolzasouruhm17911 ай бұрын
I feel like a good way to fight against trade accounts would be to have one product a week with a 30 maybe 40% off so that people who play will want to come in and check which product is cheaper that week and it will also help parents come and check in to see if they can find a good deal and if not maybe they will just buy something anyway. Also this is a clear show that they are not managing their trade stores well like you said at the end.
@darko-man854911 ай бұрын
ah, but then GW ruins its self-percieved elite hobby visage

As for wanting to be a recruitment center. I went in to buy some combat patrols for myself and two friends (warhammer store is 4 hours away), but i ended up turning away because it was $200 per patrol. Where as online i can get them for $165 per patrol. Even looking at some stand alone units which run at the store for $100 are only $80 online. It doesnt make sense. Ill never buy from them directly.
