Just one thing worth noting: a royal flush is not "special" in the same way that the other named hands have a specifically defined order. It's simply the best straight flush. Even if it weren't named, the royal flush would still be the best hand, because it's an ace high straight flush. They just gave it a name, because it's the best hand.

I think the disconnect here comes from Spanish poker cards, where the 10 and the jack are the same card, thus 9 is what you use for a flush and straights.
