To be fair why do the family members think it is acceptable to start nonsense while in someone else’s house. I’m pretty relaxed but I’m not going to have someone come to my house and talk shit then let them stay. The lasagna one doesn’t fit this context, as it was a bind taste test and the food probably just wasn’t that good. How hard is it to just be polite?

Fun fact, irl i was expelled from my dad's christmas celebration in his new wife's house, because the year prior (yes, a YEAR prior) i had a burp (singular) in their kitchen after dinner, and they thought it was rude. And he hasnt spoken to me in 7 years since then, for no other reason. People are insane even irl. Or rather, his new wife is insane, and he submits to her at the expense of his only son. Like, you wouldn't believe how insane people are irl. Luckily you only meet 1 of those for every 1000 normal people in your life. I think we'd be surprised how many of these "obviously fake" threads are actually real.

Not gonna lie, volunteer kid story got me worked up. The parents charge their non adult children to use household items??? That's a kinds of messed up. Giving your kid that works less hours an allowance while not giving the kid with more hours an allowance? Messed up. Those parents don't even really care about the kids future properly. Volunteering looks amazing on college applications while work doesn't, it looks just about as good for job applications, and considering the kid is interested in the field it's a great career choice as well. Him leaving the volunteer position is far more likely to hurt his future than to help it, but they're too concerned about making him pay for the god damned TV to realize it. Edit: also all of the reddit comments are idiots FFS.
@CmBHDz
@CmBHDz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm right there with you. The top reddit comments really sucked on that post. I honestly feel like a child deserves some level of allowance for existing, if the parents can afford that. Money is power and helps kids explore hobbies they want in to, and simply enjoy life to a similar degree that adults can. You're absolutely right about volunteering being a good pursuit, American work culture is incredibly toxic. This kid is literally finding what he wants to spend his time doing and is genuinely passionate about and the parents aren't even being supportive which is like, text book bad parenting.

@@gurderguile9258 just because someone's a woman doesn't mean they can't be misogynistic. besides, the whole 'typical passive-aggressive MIL' thing is at best, playing into some cringey boomer era archaic stereotype; or at worst, playing into preconceptions of middle-aged women similar to how the term karen is used. there's an argument for some degree of latent misogyny there, intentional or otherwise

On the cake question. I think that the request came from the child from a place of admiration where they request the cake from this person because that’s the only source they know of, which I think is reasonable and kind of OP to accept. However, as soon as the mother requests a different cake free of charge, OP has the right to decline because anyone can make a chocolate cake and there is no reason for OP to make it.
@Phoenixdown37
@Phoenixdown37 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, going by the edits? Kind of seems like the OP phrased the question and situation in their favor. First off, the mother mentioned kids who had a nut allergy when the OP already agreed to make the cake. It SEEMS unreasonable to ask, but the mother was up front about it being for a birthday party and that there were kids attending that had nut allergies. Dude also seem like they were being a bit difficult about the entire situation. All it would have take to make sure things didn't escalate would be to politely inform her that they didn't feel comfortable in their cooking skill to do anything else. It's very possible that tone of their verbal response may have also been a reason for the mothers sudden 180. Especially given the response that seemed to have upset the mother i.e "the only reason I was doing it". I can not imagine that being said in a neutral or positive tone.
@kingchuckfinley
@kingchuckfinley 3 жыл бұрын
@@Phoenixdown37 did they actually agree to make the cake though? Regardless, if they did actually agree, they agreed to make that specific cake. That’s when the requesting person says, “ oh alright no worries, I can get/ make a different cake “ perhaps a better offer would be “if I get the ingredients for a chocolate cake, do you think you could make that instead?” A waste of time and money otherwise.

@@dylanb2990 except OP never stated that they initially agreed to make a cake other than the nut cake they already made. The idea that one cake is the same as the other even tho they are completely separate categories of cakes and requires a completely new recipe, including research on how to put that together and trial-and-error, is such an ignorant position clearly coming from someone who has never had to do the research to put together a recipe from scratch. It's entirely a "choosing beggar" mentality, And if it was truly not that big a deal then the mother in question could just have made a chocolate cake herself based on a recipe online or bought one from a bakery.

"with a part-time job you'd be working 30-60 hours a week" that';s categorically a full time job, it's actually illegal to let a teenager work more than eight hours a day/40 hours a week. also, i feel like everyone in the replies forgot that the sister gets an allowance in addition to the pay she receives from her work. like, the parents have absolutely established an expectation to provide an allowance, they're just denying it to the OP because they don't like what he's doing. they'd rather use the allowance as leverage to exert more control over their soon-to-be-adult son than actually support and encourage him to pursue his genuine interests.

For the well electricity... If it's a single residence they can do a well on a small pump, less than 5 horsepower, but I'll use that. Electricity is usually charged per kilowatt hours, so let's convert horsepower. Each horsepower is like 750 watts, but I'll use 1k to give a large margin of error. Any well pump should be sized to at least 10 gallons per minute, although that's quite low. Toilets where I am are 1.28 gallons per flush, but I'll use 2. So we have 2 gallons of water for a flush that can be refilled in 12 seconds, using 1 kilowatt of energy. I will round this to one minute. That makes 1/60 of a kilowatt hour. Where I am, peak electric cost is 33 cents per kilowatt hour. Congratulations, the gal is saving one half of a cent per flush.

also when you think about water vs everything else, maybe dishes definitely shower, she's using far more water with those on in a couple of minutes compared to a few flushes she's worrying about the wrong gallons, like lets say she takes a 5 minute shower that's already dozens of gallons in a short amount of time, unless she washes with a rag and a bucket every single day then hey more power to her and lets say she has a dishwasher. she's not saving anywhere near the amount of water she thinks she is.

Not flushing the toilet is gross. I definitely can see the water-saving aspect, but toilets use very little water these days and the smelly pee is just gross. It also makes the bowl disgusting, would be cleaning my toilet bowl all of the time.

I see these videos show up on my feed and go "oh man, I don't wanna hear about this," and then I watch them and I can't stop smiling or laughing at just how absurd these situations are and having someone more relatable pull things apart with some dry humour really turns the mood around. And, for better or worse, I guess you come away from hearing these stories feeling a like a little more normal a human.

our house used a credit system; credits were earned by doing chores (plus a 10 credit/week stipend), completing service work, or doing any self-growth activity (sports, exercise, duolingo, good grades, etc.) and were then spent for treats, screen time, or special events. I'm of the opinion that the system was good.

Yeah i live in semi-regional SA and when the bad droughts hit in the early 2000's towns were literally running out of water. I remember that phrase very vividly lol. The context of where the person lived is probably important. that being said I always flush nowadays so...

The flushing after peeing one was just red flags on both sides, it's crazy. If you care that much about not flusing that you're willing to let a relationship end because of it that's a huge red flag, but by the same token it's also a red flag if you so that much about whether someone flushes when they pee.

The MIL had no idea though. As far as she knew she was just randomly fed some lasagna while blindfolded. “What does this taste like?”
@TheRadioSquare
@TheRadioSquare 3 жыл бұрын
@@dylmm I mean, you're visiting someone and they do a taste test on you. Even if they for some reason decide to feed you microwaved frozen lasagna, the common sense should suggest that someone cooked it and it's best to be tactful. Considering she thought it could be a cockroach though, that's asking too much.
