Not gonna lie, volunteer kid story got me worked up. The parents charge their non adult children to use household items??? That's a kinds of messed up. Giving your kid that works less hours an allowance while not giving the kid with more hours an allowance? Messed up. Those parents don't even really care about the kids future properly. Volunteering looks amazing on college applications while work doesn't, it looks just about as good for job applications, and considering the kid is interested in the field it's a great career choice as well. Him leaving the volunteer position is far more likely to hurt his future than to help it, but they're too concerned about making him pay for the god damned TV to realize it. Edit: also all of the reddit comments are idiots FFS.
@CmBHDz3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm right there with you. The top reddit comments really sucked on that post. I honestly feel like a child deserves some level of allowance for existing, if the parents can afford that. Money is power and helps kids explore hobbies they want in to, and simply enjoy life to a similar degree that adults can. You're absolutely right about volunteering being a good pursuit, American work culture is incredibly toxic. This kid is literally finding what he wants to spend his time doing and is genuinely passionate about and the parents aren't even being supportive which is like, text book bad parenting.

On the cake question. I think that the request came from the child from a place of admiration where they request the cake from this person because that’s the only source they know of, which I think is reasonable and kind of OP to accept. However, as soon as the mother requests a different cake free of charge, OP has the right to decline because anyone can make a chocolate cake and there is no reason for OP to make it.
@Phoenixdown373 жыл бұрын
Honestly, going by the edits? Kind of seems like the OP phrased the question and situation in their favor. First off, the mother mentioned kids who had a nut allergy when the OP already agreed to make the cake. It SEEMS unreasonable to ask, but the mother was up front about it being for a birthday party and that there were kids attending that had nut allergies. Dude also seem like they were being a bit difficult about the entire situation. All it would have take to make sure things didn't escalate would be to politely inform her that they didn't feel comfortable in their cooking skill to do anything else. It's very possible that tone of their verbal response may have also been a reason for the mothers sudden 180. Especially given the response that seemed to have upset the mother i.e "the only reason I was doing it". I can not imagine that being said in a neutral or positive tone.
@kingchuckfinley3 жыл бұрын
@@Phoenixdown37 did they actually agree to make the cake though? Regardless, if they did actually agree, they agreed to make that specific cake. Any well pump should be sized to at least 10 gallons per minute, although that's quite low. Toilets where I am are 1.28 gallons per flush, but I'll use 2. So we have 2 gallons of water for a flush that can be refilled in 12 seconds, using 1 kilowatt of energy. I will round this to one minute. That makes 1/60 of a kilowatt hour. 43:20 If OP for this post is on a well, they are likely on a septic tank as well. Not flushing tons of TP will help keep your septic system in good working order and will allow you to go longer without needing to pump the tank out.

I'm in the NTA camp for the cooking one. You shouldn't insult food people cook for you, you don't like the food you smile and say it's delicious but I'm full

I get the first person being offended, but why let the opinion of an old middle aged woman bother you. Seems like she should’ve just let it go and moved on. Kicking them out over assumed animosity is a bit over dramatic.

The fact that they put her in that weird experimental setup makes this so much weirder. In a situation like this I would think that I'm expected to give my honest opinion rather than being nice.

It cost around 1.3 cents (american) to flush a toilet. Just a fun fact that leads to me to paying 1.3 cents NOT to smell your waste. People who are obsessed over water and electrical usage I will never understand. "You left the light on overnight?! That cost us literally 9.2 seconds of work!"

The flushing after peeing one was just red flags on both sides, it's crazy. If you care that much about not flusing that you're willing to let a relationship end because of it that's a huge red flag, but by the same token it's also a red flag if you so that much about whether someone flushes when they pee.

19:25 Youre missing the aspect of being appreciated for your craft. That's what op gets out of the transaction. If he just makes a chocolate cake then he gets nothing aside from the kind of appreciation he'd get if he makes cake for just anyone.

the How to Win Friends and Influence People joke got me good but i unironically think tons of people on AITA would benefit from it. it's heavy handed and kinda silly at times but it's as close as you can get to a written guide on how to be nice to people, which seems like one of the most common problems on AITA.

Some people put a lot of effort and time in their cooking so they form a sense of pride in it. OP is kind of an asshole for escalating the situation but MIL is also quite an asshole for openly insulting OP's cooking for no reason.
@dylmm3 жыл бұрын
The MIL had no idea though. As far as she knew she was just randomly fed some lasagna while blindfolded. “What does this taste like?”
@TheRadioSquare3 жыл бұрын
@@dylmm I mean, you're visiting someone and they do a taste test on you. Even if they for some reason decide to feed you microwaved frozen lasagna, the common sense should suggest that someone cooked it and it's best to be tactful. Considering she thought it could be a cockroach though, that's asking too much.
