NL you can micro the ion weapons a little less by just having it shoot at weapons. When an ion blaster hits the physical shields it ions the shields and once they are down you are already ioning the weapons. You won't need to switch were it aims.

Getting the Glaive was the right move, but he should also have sold the Ion, Swarm, and Medi-bot to buy the Flak. Had he done that, he'd have easily won. Pre-ignited Flak + Glaive would trash any enemy up to sector 6. Picking up that second Flak would have let him destroy the Flagship easily.

You're playing a drone ship, level your drones. It's capable of dealing incredible damage. Had a Torus run with 2 combat and 1 beam drone (eventually level 2s), and the damage is great. The ion II shoots so fast you can switch back and forth between targeting weapons and shields like you did and cripple your opponent while your drones crush.

Can we get a count of FTL players who ACTUALLY believe the 4th level of shields isn't worth it? I genuinely haven't seen anyone in the community claim the 4th level of shields is a trap, and I'm wondering if it's just one really loud guy that keeps telling him.

4th level shields is essential. On the third level of flagship it keeps you alive 100%.

@@TILsquared96 This is also why it's a very good idea to prevent your entire ship (or whatever you can) before then. It's a frustrating and random fight no matter how good your ship is. The only hard counter to that phase is cloaking.

@@Arguswastaken it's roughly 200 scrap including power, but in the last sector, the ships give you so much scrap as reward that you can basically save up enough to buy shields on the way to fight the boss.

Unless you have massive amounts of shield regen speed(shield crew xp + shield recharge booster), the fourth level of shields is hardly ever recharged to during combat after the initial volley, whereas the extra dodge or weapons can always get value for you. Especially against the flagship, you'll not recharge the 4th layer of shield- you'll usually get to the third or so and then a layer or more gets used again

Thus why everyone tells you it's a trap, because with the fire rate of most enemies you won't be able to recharge to 4 layers (you'll almost always get hit by 3 layers and half a recharge of the 4th) unless it's an enemy that wasn't a threat in the first place. I say this with a thousand or so hours of experience in FTL. Took me a while to realize the countervalue of 4th shield, even as I noted my shields were never fully charged.

I often use the scrap from sector 8 to take my shields to level 4. It's a bit of an extravagance, but it's helpful tanking the drone and laser swarm specials from the latter phases of the Flagship

One thing I genuinely enjoy about FTL is that the final boss is actually a noticeable challenge compared to the rest of the game. It's satisfying to watch NL get to the final boss (whether he succeeds or fails) and steadily improve his playstyle and game choices over the course of several runs.

To be fair, you could have started with a Fire Bomb, setting a room near shields or weapons on fire (if it doesn’t miss), then fire your Ion Blast on Shields and whatnot. Little bit slower, but you get more stuff if you kill the crew before the ship.

The order of operations in that shop had me writhing. Shoulda just fixed the ship with what you had left after buying what you needed. Coulda got the crewmate without having to sell combat drone, which is pretty good for passively dealing with shields, by just doing one less repair.

Surrender often gives you more fuel, missiles, and drones but less scrap, while killing does the opposite, so it's not always optimal to kill. Depends on what you have and what you need. That being said, NL still accepts the surrender way too often.
