Advanced Zoltan tech is having shields unpowered until they get through your green shield, since they don't do anything until then anyway. You can then have loads of power in engines so that the shield lasts as long as possible.

@@ophiss5406 It's most relevant in the late game and at lower difficulties where the capability of your ship is limited by the reactor cap so you have a have a lot of system power to reallocate mid fight. Just another way to min-max

Disagree, because once you power the shields they actually have to charge up each bar individually, which can go very wrong. *EDIT* Since people seem to me misunderstanding what I'm saying here, I'll spell it out better: 1. If you have bought the 4th bar of shields as anything but one of your very last possible purchases, you've fucked up. 2. If you don't have enough reactor power for 8 engine bars and 3 shields, you're either in an Ion Storm or you've fucked up. 3. Yes, dodge is always better than shields, but if you fully deactivate your shields to power up your engines and rely on your Zoltan shield to save you, then you can take a lot of hull damage in your scramble to reactive the shields once your Zoltan shield fails as it takes several seconds for each shield bar to regenerate and you can take a lot of damage during this period if you screw up the timing. You don't want to be like NL was in that asteroid field, do you? Get a backup battery, or temporarily depower something unimportant like the oxygen before you depower shields, it can be done but it's very very risky and I wouldn't recommend it to most.

When they're trying to jump away, it's usually better to take out piloting rather than engines. It could take up to 8 damage to engines to stop them from jumping, but piloting caps out at 3.

Protip: When you have a lot of zoltan crew, putting two zoltan in shields results in an ion immune shield. This is because zoltan power bypasses ion damage.

About the boss, It's pretty important to kill if possible the crew manning the missiles, so he can't repair it once it's down. In this run leto should have been directed always to the missiles system until the crew was dead and the system was down.

A quick tip for maximizing scrap gain: Try to hit up nebula beacons whenever possible. They may be annoying, but doing so will slow down the rebel fleet, giving you more time to explore in each sector.

NL, dodge chance is one of the best upgrades in the games, especially with Zoltan ships. At 45% dodge (fully skilled pilot and engine-man, plus the last of the +5% upgrades), you'll be nearly doubling your super-shield, which gives you that much more time to not worry about missiles. Upgrading past the second level of shields should come _after_ a few dodge upgrades, since it helps against missiles as well as lasers.

Watching that second phase of the boss fight was really painful. He kinda had the right idea about waiting to shoot multiple things at once, but he went about it really poorly. The chain laser should have just been on auto, targeting the shields room the whole time. It has to keep shooting to get the maximum benefit of its recharge cooldown, and the shields were the biggest limiting factor in his damage potential. And he should have let the flak fire a short time before the missile so that the defense drone shoots down one of the flak pieces instead of the missile. But because he fired them at the same time and the missile is much faster, we got to see the defense drone target the lone missile every single time. And then that poor Zoltan that died after the fight... :(

I disagree on autofiring the chain laser. He has pre-igniter. So that's one charge already done. The problem I saw is that he would fire them at the same time as the flak. By the time the flak hit the shields, the enemy already had at least one shield bubble back up. You're supposed to fire flak first, then lasers just before flak hits to get the most effect. Then shoot the missile as any enemy drones have already fired. He got really unlucky on some rounds though where I don't think any of this would have mattered. In the boss fights, you need to get the missile launcher down quickly. He did that in phase 1. Phase 2 and 3, it remained up. edit: Correction, he actually did target the missiles in phase 2. It's the drone attacks that got him, especially the beam drones once shields were down. If you don't have cloak, you need to be able to end the fight quickly.

I just had to tell somebody - I just finished a Kestral run and got both the 'tough little ship' and 'united federation' achievements, then beat the final stage of the boss by hitting him with a missile at the same time as his missile destroyed me (after biobeaming the crew and their AI taking over) - the victory text doesn't care if you die in the process, I feel like I should go and buy a lottery ticket today?

Prioritize engines more. You should have at least 5 engine power and gold-star pilot and engineer by the flagship. Also, if Sips hadn't died, you probably would've won. Don't try and cut it so close with your units' HP. You're almost there, Egg! You can get a win, I believe in you!
