With reference to your tirade on "who makes the rules" of writing, its a rather complicated historical issue. Something kind of funny is when you speak about "linguistical rebellion" and the idea of supporting run on sentences, bucking the "platonic ideals" of writing... you actually end up where the modernist and avant-grade writers were at the early part of the 20th century. I mean if you look at James Joyce or William Faulkner you can see the kind of linguistic rebellion you reference, as run on sentences go on for pages and punctuation is sparse, etc. I think the hegemony of writing rules exists in the modern day because of general consensus about what is good and what is bad, though probably there is outsize influence in the "educated elite" of writers... a.k.a those who write professionally already. But I would also say that if you look at the "experimental" literature, poetry, etc. of the modern day, you see people trying to emulate the same types of rebellion sometimes as those in the earlier part of the last century. So I would say the simple answer is that people who write criticism of literature tend to make the rules for good literature, and the average person doesn't care until he does (a.k.a until things are too weird).

Not when I'm reading it, Daroonsims. Linguistics is my jam. Though I support the idea that in my country, 'who makes the rules' was a guy named Noah Webster. The quintessential differences between British and American English are the products of his methodology. Lack of the letter U in words like color and honor. Lack of a PH in words like Fantasy. Dropping the superfluous dipthong Æ in words like ether and eon (and pedophile). That was all his doing.

Northernlion, to answer your question, (assuming you read these) English grammar rules aren't passed down by a dictionary or by any high education authority, but are instead a codification of the ways we write and speak. That sounds a bit like a tautology, but it's really not. We write and speak in certain ways because of tradition, and grammar rules are just a record of that tradition - not obeying them won't get the police sent after you, but it will show everyone around you that you're not trying to be formal. Like the one guy who misspells everything - you know they're not doing it because it's impossible to learn, they're doing it because they just don't give a fuck. Fortunately for you, the rules are meant to be broken. Just like breaking spelling convention means that you're being informal, breaking grammar convention is a sign that you want to lighten the load on the conversation. An explanation for the others: we don't use "like" a lot in a sentence because it's cruft. Most of the time people use it as punctuation, or to bridge gaps in their sentences that they don't have a word for yet. It's informal - not because it doesn't work - but because it's a sign the person hasn't thought out their point well. Mixed metaphors are okay if you're trying to be funny, but in serious conversation they're harder to pin down - generally if a metaphor is detached enough from reality that you have to mix it with another metaphor to give it punch, it's overused. Coming up with your own metaphors is advised, and even recommended. We don't use run-ons because they introduce multiple subjects into a sentence with no logical order. It's not that they're bad inherently, it's that your brain is wired to hear and read sentences following certain grammar rules, and when those rules are broken it's impossible to determine what the original message was supposed to be. Generally when someone _uses_ a run-on sentence, when they would speak that sentence verbally they would use punctuation in the proper place; in that sense, it is the same as a spelling error, in that they know the structure but not how to translate it onto paper.

Rules like "dont split infinitives" are literally completely fake and were invented to make english more like latin
@mirrorimage70777 жыл бұрын
To put it frankly, split infinitives are a normal feature of English. You're right there. However, any high-school English teacher actually observant enough to catch this rare occurrence is hopefully smart enough to know that. If you have a teacher who persecuted you for split infinitives, then it's the fault of the teacher and not the current academic consensus.

Strictly in linguistic terms, there are two main schools of thought for how one must speak: ascriptive linguistics (where one defines how language should be used and spoken) and descriptive linguistics (when one describes how the language is actually being used by the speakers). So from the ascriptivist perspective, scholars with years of study and discussion make the rules of language with hopes of imparting it upon people, and from a descriptivist perspective is the speakers who decide how language is spoken via their usage of it and certain structures. So to answer your question- run on sentences might not be that accepted because we as speakers/readers find them confusing or ugly or we just simply don't like them, so because we don't use them as much as other structures they aren't as accepted as a lot of punctuation is when it comes to writing

Generally "good" writing is a market decision, so ultimately it is the reader that decides what is and what is not well written. This is why writing styles vary broadly from audience to audience. A legal memo is very different from speech writing, which is different from any of the hundreds of forms of poetry, which is different from novel writing, which is different from journalistic writing etc...
@billpecoraro84217 жыл бұрын
Related: A lingual determinist would say language is like gymnastics; there is a right way and wrong way to communicate and the right way requires a lot of training and attention to detail. A poet would say language is like gymnastics; it's a form of artistic expression and it's proper use is ultimately determined by the artist itself. A realist would say language is like gymnastics: there isn't necessarily a right way or wrong way to use it but most people are bad at it.

To NL: A person develops their language usage knowledge with time and use. But written language, at most levels, uses a complexity of period that is not usual for the common person, especially for a youth. A person has to be informed of what (one of the) global standard(s) of their language is through exposure to a form that is considered the most neuter possible. That's right, to say concepts, languages have a preferred "standard" syntax, that can vary slowly overtime, which is used for technical writing, because, as you will understand, it's easier to compare papers and studies written roughly in the same style rather than style-divergingly. The other essential function of having a standard is, that's right, understanding when somebody breaks it; for example, I could say "I saw a black cat", which is the standard English form for expressing this concept; now, imagine I said "I saw a cat, which was black": it's a little clumsier; maybe I want to express a feeling of uneasiness at the sight, maybe the speaker is a child: that's better defined through context, but the feel of a particular construction is given by how it does (and does not) diverge from the common style. In fact, most great world literature is made by people who break so many established rules, in the themes treated or in the form they treat them in (you cited Joyce in this very video) that at first they receive strong backlash for it. I hope this can put you in the right direction for what regards the purpose of educating children to a standard. Great video as always!
@TeHPHoBoS9997 жыл бұрын
NL, the grammar rules exist as exceptionally useful guidelines. They're for people who don't know how to write well to make their writing not sound like puerile garbage. I'm not John Grisham, but I'm the guy all my friends go to if they need their writing checked. And you know what they get on their papers after I revise them? They get 100's. Why? Because the teachers enjoy reading what I write. And you know how I started writing? With a checklist of things that had to be in my written papers. Little middleschooler checking a list of sentence starters and clauses and random things that you need to be able to use well. Godawful papers, but they taught me what I needed to know so I don't need the guidelines to pass any and every writing test that comes my way. Not to mention, using a word too much makes it sound bad. Ever say a word so much it fails to have meaning? That's why you don't use just or like more than once or twice in short succession. I know you just want to get your point across, but I'm just telling you that just can be overused to a degree that it just isn't good anymore. That's also the problem with words that are used for various meanings, like "like." You need to know the better words.

So, on the point of mixed metaphors. The way that I understand it is, that it's like mixed messages. So, you can use two metaphors in conjunction, that is not the problem. The problem arises when you use two metaphors that contradict each other or don't make sense together, like mixed messages, so you shouldn't say, "She was flying high, like a pig in mud" here because the two metaphors inherently inform each other, but in a way that does not make sense. You can, however, say, "She was fishing in troubled waters, up shits creek" because, again the two metaphors inform each other, but here, in a way that makes sense, expands the metaphor and gives it more oomph, so to speak.

Belt is a .3 speed up. Taking small rock decreased your speed by .2

We won't take thunder thighs unless we get a speed upgrade. Gets speed upgrade, doesn't take thunder thighs.

Honestly my English teachers have decided that for me. Grammar is what the teachers say it is. Which in turn is what the government says it is. So really the government decides what good grammar is for us

Remembers the Bible insta-kills mom, but not that diplopia mechanics were changed multiple patches ago. Slow progress, aside from the black rune misconception!

Broken Crown is 100x better than any other trinket in the game. It can--and usually is--better than having both cancer and horn at the same time.

The closest thing to the rules-makers for English (in the US at least) would be the Modern Language Association of America (MLA). Most principles people use pretty much come from Strunk and White's _Elements of Style._ but in reality, English doesn't have any governing body of usage, unlike a lot of other languages of the world.

The language is simply evolving and "piling up" on other rules from before, of course there are scholars who decide what is put into the dictionary, but its more of a common agreement that is also boosted by it being very close to the tradition of the country it comes from.
