The movies are cash grabs since everyone will go see them, and as they're meant for the wider audience, they can dumb down the lore and turn up the action. The Korean War is counted as a win for the US, just not a win for South Korea. The US wasn't there to reunify the country, they were there to beat back the North Koreans, which they did till the North Koreans signed the armistice. Vietnam is the closest to a lost war the US has, though officially speaking the US didn't lose, cause the US didn't have to sign a peace treaty to end the war, the US just left. The next closest thing to a loss the US had was The War of 1812... officially it was a stalemate as neither the US or Britain gained anything out of it.

Yo so volley fire is pretty much your best bet with muskets. It wasn't bad tactics. Rifles were very rare and expensive so the only way you could reliably hit anything was to fire a lot of guns at once and improve your odds.
