"Better not cook anything with BBQ sauce in the future because I'm eating in the pool AND I'M A MESSY EATER." >< To be honest the BBQ situation sounds like cultural differences. Seems like the wife is a Filipino or something with some traditional values, feels like the meal is the coupe de grace of being a family. As an outsider she needs that validation, but the parents aren't respecting her need to be recognized and welcomed with open arms, rather than not liking her food. They need to put it all on the table and try to understand each other with a heart-to-heart. I'd wager the wife could overlook the picky eating if she felt like the mother respected her.

That parent taking away the PC story is so one-sided. My friends have been on the receiving end of overly controlling parents and its so unfair. Their parents yell at them and even hit them for not doing well, it doesn't make them do well in school, so the parents then start taking away things like their phone and pc. A good parent can sit down with their kid and discuss things. Building up that trust between parent and child is how you convince a child to listen, not beating and stealing. Of my friends who had their pc's taken away, none of them did better in school after, none of them stopped loving videogames, none of them like their parents.

Video game thing: I think NL said something that made me realize the parents kind of are assholes. If they didn't want to do the research, they should've said "never mind, we just won't bother." The child also didn't actually expect to get market value at a yard sale, admitting he didn't think many would sell, but was probably hoping to get at least a few moved since they were holding a yard sale anyway. Instead his parents not only fucked up on the pricing, but sold a game they shouldn't have. Yeah the kid definitely made a mistake, but I'd say the parents kinda suck for that. They clearly didn't take their child seriously and didn't value what he had to say.

Agreed. If the roles were flipped and 19yo sold parents stuff way under value, including smth they said not to, the parents would've flipped and demanded the same, probably. As you said, it's not just the loss of value, but the utter lack of respect. They want to use the "should've done it yourself," but they asked 19yo for permission to sell the games. The onus is on them to make sure they're following permission, or otherwise, as you said, simply don't bother selling them.

With the first one I feel like the specific food that the wife is cooking means more to her than she's letting on. Something like her now-dead mum used to cook food that has barbecue sauce/gravy in it when she was growing up and she strongly associates the food with memories of her mum. When her mother-in-law doesn't want to eat the food, to the wife it subconsciously feels like her late mum is being disrespected which causes her to get overly defensive (or something similar).

Like when he says he will not force the kid to leave does he also mean he will interfere if say the grandparents come by and force him to leave or something. I can not tell if he is just not wanting to be the bad guy and would let someone else be or if he is straight up kidnapping his nephew

NL is parent-biased. Games kid was foolish to let them sell their games, but they did specifically ask them to check the value. It was conditional permission, if the parents didn't want to do it it's ok, but then they should not have sold them at all.

I will say that I'm worried the kid with the gaming pc is going through some shit which is beyond the parents ability to percieve. Kids get stressed especially when they've got a lot of work to do, taking the pc away in it's entirety is just making it so they can't easily destress. A compromise solution is definitely best.

Right, especially if the kid is depressed or something and is using video games as an escape, taking away the PC won't help.

The video game one needs more context. Like if he sat them down and said, "look I can't help that day, but these games are worth a lot please make sure to look them up before selling them", then maybe he has a right to be made. But ONLY if they agreed to that. Only if it was made clear they understood you were expecting to sell them at a high price. But overall if he wanted to do that he shouldn't have let them sell them without him there. It's on him.

Okay, unpopular take, but I am seriously side-eyeing the uncle story. A big red flag in the uncle's story was how he told his nephew he couldn't stand his mother anymore. Like, you don't say that to a kid. Ever. I don't care how rude she was to you; that's not okay during a divorce and it's not okay here. Be an adult and focus on protecting the kid from the fallout of this incredibly stressful, inconsiderate situation. Kicking the sister out to begin with is a super sketchy thing to do to begin with, though I certainly understand doing so if (taking the uncle's story in good faith) she's being verbally abusive to you. You don't make it worse for the kid by encouraging him to pick sides. The nephew's cleaning up after himself? Yeah, of course he is. He's a kid being torn between two parental figures. Not only is he trying to make himself welcome in the home of the figure who lets him stay up past midnight watching Rick and Morty, he's probably trying to be responsible and enforce some safety and stability because nobody else is. Basically, the uncle and sister are both putting the nephew in a horrible situation by acting like children while the nephew struggles to be the grownup. ESH (except the nephew). Also, the uncle needs to grow up a little. I don't care that he's younger than the sister--he's 24 and an adult. If he wants to take care of a kid for a while, he needs to start, just as one example, enforcing a common-sense curfew. If he can't take care of the nephew, he needs to evict him. Look, I know I seem heartless here, but "cool uncles" make bad parents. Children need stability, especially children in positions of housing insecurity or who've lost family members. You don't get to be the "cool uncle" if you want to be a long-term guardian. This is not the sort of situation where I care much about the uncle's feelings. I'm more concerned about the kid who's being thrust into a really weird and messy situation with nobody except the therapist apparently prioritizing the kid's wellbeing.
@beep_the_foolish
@beep_the_foolish 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, but even if the uncle isn't a great caretaker, he seems to be the best option available. Evicting the kid because he can't provide a lot of stability means the kid has no stability.
@loreleiflare7388
@loreleiflare7388 3 жыл бұрын
@@beep_the_foolish There's actually not a ton of evidence that the uncle is any better a caretaker than the mom. That's not to say the mom is great or whatever - we know very little about her from the uncle's side of the story - but if I have to choose, I think it's much better to err on the side of the child's mother and legal guardian. That said, I agree with the therapist, like I said - the uncle's place may be the best option right now, since the child has been forced to pick one. But it's the uncle's fault for forcing the child to choose like this. Evicting the mom, but not the child, sort of reads to me like he half-expected this to happen. It's the source of the current instability. I hope all the adults involved can grow up so the kid doesn't have to.

Food is *very important* in a lot of cultures - and i don't mean cultures around the world, i mean family culture. I can absolutely believe that story (or at least the bones of it, i feel it's very skewed to make the op look to be perfectly in the clear) Like, on my mom's side of the family, Christmas dinner is a battle in a decades long war. What you make for that meal is a matter of *status*. If you make something bad, or good but inappropriate, *you will be the butt of jokes for years to come*. And then there is the reverse engineering of the recipes while we eat. Woe on you if you call an ingredient that wasn't in the dish ! My dad is still dazzled by the whole thing and he's been going to these dinners for 30+ years.

it's not about making money from a yard sale. it's about the fact his parents ignored what he told them to do which was only sell games for what they are worth. if you were the parent and saw a game was worth $100+ and thought that's way too much for a simple yard sale, then do not sell it. don't just ignore what your son had told you to do and sell it off.

His parents were the ones who asked if he could sell some of his video games because he wasn't available to help with the garage sale. That was the exchange, he probably didn't even want to sell them in the first place, as shown by him being surprised by them selling so many of his games

About the selling video games one, he's NTA since the parents didn't make ANY effort or take ANY care at all, not even a little bit, to make sure stuff on the list wasn't sold or the prices were correct. They didn't look at a single game's value, they couldn't even make sure nothing on the list was sold. There was no effort at all. You can't just write off that since they're his parents it's not their fault for completely ignoring his terms, and then not even mentioning anything to him until all is done. It's extremely clear that his parents are the asshole

I relate to video game garage sale guy. When I left for college I left my video game collection at home. When I came back, I found out my grandparents, with whom I lived growing up, let my homeless meth head father take all of my video games from the house while I was away. I had hundreds in the collection and it was worth thousands. I am still angry about it and that was years ago.
