After all your comments and suggestions on my new (used) Powerstroke Diesel, I have been worried about the head gaskets. I thought FOR SURE that I needed new ones. I also think the place I bought it from thought it did to. This video will explain what I mean. Whew!!! Not this time.

1. Never, ever ever ever add stop leak to these trucks. 2. Get a Scanguage 2 and hook up to your truck. Much better and more accurate gauge than those on dash. It is about $150. 3. Dont add stop leak. 4. Get a coolant filter. 5. Definitely watch the Powerstroke Help vids and diesel tech ron vids. 6. Studs, new oil cooler, and egr delete are good, just expensive. 7. No stop leak. These are great trucks and i love mine.... 2006 F250 XLT 6.0 PSD, 4x2, 6 spd manual transmission. Completely stock, upgraded oil cooler and egr cooler.

Proper coolant level is the add mark on the bottle when the truck is cold. Ford issued a service bulletin on it that included a sticker to place on the bottle to Lower the coolant level.

Same scare for me on my 6.0 King Ranch. I overfilled the Degass bottle and started puking coolant. Already had bullet proofed about 5 years ago but thought the gaskets failed again. Dont over fill when cold!

ALERT never use stop leak on any engine but esecially on a 6.0 powerstroke you will instantly clog your oil cooler into an unusable state and they are $400 + 3 hours of your time

Looks like you are on the path to fix it. Those caps on the degas tanks fail often, usually they fail and you get the white residue on your tank. I replace mine once a year to be safe, I think I might have 18 months on the current cap. Get a new cap if the tank doesn't come with one. I don't think you mentioned if this truck has any mods or not. I highly recommend the Bullet Proof oil cooler and an aftermarket egr cooler. Also if you haven't bought one, get a system monitor, scangauge or Edge CTS, or the like. These trucks are good trucks, the monitor will pre warn you of issues. I.e. Oil and coolant temp should be within 15 degrees, nothing more, if it's more that's a sign your oil cooler is plugged. That's if you are bone stock... Lots of good info on the powerstroke forums. Oh the reason everyone says no stop leak is that the oil and egr coolers have small coolant channels, they are prone to plug with silica based (stock) coolant. Stop leak will accelerate that, most of us have switched our coolant to an ELC, I use CAT.

Don't use stop leak! Will plug the EGR cooler and it will fail, that is the first place 6.0 PSD failures begin. Since you bought the truck at the right price and plan to keep it for a long time, save up for a bulletproofing rebuild and get it done before you do have a failure. The 6.0 can be a good engine once built and tuned properly.

Diesels are slow to warm up at an Idle they will get up to temperature on the road and will drop temperature real fast again at in idle. Nature of the beast. Before you open up the motor buy a pressure tester . Or visit a shop who has one. A meter with a hand pump attached to it . Pressurize the system an d watch for pressure drop. A drop means a leak in the system. Hoses and tanks can leak also as you found out. For ease of mind I would replace belts and hoses so that you know what you have. 5 years is the time frame that you should expect replaceable rubber parts to last.

Don't go off your dash Guage for temp. Get a scan gauge or something else to monitor your temps. You probably still have a headgasket problem, you won't know until you do a pressure test on your coolant under load.

Hey Joe if that Ford truck is like All there Other diesel trucks you should have a very good truck. My dad has had three ford diesel trucks. The very first one was back in the 80's put over 300,000 miles on it camping across the USA then sold it. If Ford still makes their trucks like they have. The engine in your truck is probable a international diesel engine which is the same engine in the bigger trucks just smaller. Just keep up on maintenance and it will run non stop for you.

Ran across this video again. Diesels are not gasoline engines. They will not reach operating temperature unless you drive them with some load down the road. Letting it sit and idle is a waste of fuel and time.. Yes they will warm up if they idle, but they won't be full temperature. It's a better use of the fuel to start the truck wait for the oil temp gauge to move up a small amount, if you want to wait at all, and start driving. You have to remember these engines are literally 1000 pounds of rubber iron and aluminum and it's going to take a long time to bring all of that to a warm temperature while idling.

I had this one fully bullet proofed, EGR delete, The upgraded exhaust things that tend to blow out or something? I had the thing that hooks up to the turbo replaced a few weeks ago with the new upgraded one that will not leak. I had Cutting Edge Diesel do a full complete engine rebuild. All new injectors and glow plugs, pistons, rings. Everything. All new gaskets because the original Ford ones tended to leak. I have 25,000 miles on the rebuild and this truck runs like a fine tuned machine. I bring it in like clock work and get the oil changed every 3000 miles and the fuel filter changed at 12,000. This motor should be awesome for a very long time. Whoever had it before me did not take care of her. I do.

NorthernSeclusion sounds like a great truck now. Definitely earned my sub. The hate on the 6.0 is just too much. My dad owned a 2003 which is the worst year and went 140k before he had some issues with injectors and I believe egr. I don’t think he changed his oil on regular intervals like you aswell. Truck served him 10 years and the rust on the utility body made him get a new 6.7. He’s got 100k on it now no problems.

Never! Put stop leak in this motor. You will wreck your oil cooler. Anyone with a 6.0 needs a way to monitor Temps and pressure, cheapest way is torque pro app. I'll bet half the people that have a 6.0 have clogged oil coolers and are running way high oil Temps and don't even know it. By the way why use stop leak in any motor? Just fix the problem, stop leak and any product that offers an easy fix is garbage.

I'm new to the diesel world. Just bought a 6L excursion. It has the EGR delete, cold air intake, 4 inch exhaust and the guy I bought it from put in new injectors. It runs awesome. I installed a coolant filter, any other suggestions? A friend said I shouldn't need the studs as long as I replace the coolant regularly. As far as temperatures, the oil hasn't ran over 205f (hiway driving) and the coolant didn't go over 190f. I think its running top notch 🤷‍♂️. It has 305,000km on it currently.

Do not let it go over 5,000 miles between oil changes. The oil runs that whole system. Get the fuel filters changed every other oil change. I had mine fully bullet proofed but the most important thing is making sure you change the oil.

So someone else added stop leak and you did too? That is the absolute worst thing that you can do to the 6.0. Incredibly bad move. You need to educate yourself before touching that truck man. I've owned a 6.0 for over 10 years and love it to death but stop leak is an absolute killer. At the very least you need an oil cooler. The oil coolers will continue to plug from the stop leak. The bottle is cracked from boiling coolant from a plugged oil cooler most likely.
