LYRICS: Time in constant motion, Like the shifting desert sands Slipping through my hands Chasing down the minutes, That turn into days Seconds get shorter, As years fall away Chasing down my dreams Under borrowed light A mirage in the distance, Escaping my sight Driven to live or driven apart What's inside us when we depart Driven to live outside of regret Time is finite, the clocks are set Driven to live or driven apart I realize my flame is burning away Starward searching I will find my way The power of the mind ready to combust I will show you fear in a handful of dust Combust My flame is fleeting, But I will live and learn Rise and burn, Tick and Turn Rise and burn Time in constant motion, Like the shifting desert sands Slipping through my hands Driven to live or driven apart What's inside us when we depart Driven to live outside of regret Time is finite, the clocks are set Driven to live or driven apart Combust

Personally, I think the production sounds fine. It's really all a matter of opinion, but I will say people in the progressive metal/metalcore/deathcore/djent/whateveryouwanttocallit community are close minded to any other sound than what they expect. Very few of the bands in this genre have been able to put out more than 2 or 3 albums without portions their fanbases turning on them: Structures and Veil of Maya being recent examples.

I've worked with the producer who's done this and he's as tops as it gets. He did singularity and heaps of great albums for the human abstract, for today, like moths to flames, oceano, thy art is murder, upon a burning body, gideon, the amity affliction, fit for a king and SO many heavy hitters. The guitar player and main composer of this band is very picky and knows exactly the sound he wants and I can assure you this is EXACTLY it. Part of the job of being a producer is to give your clients what they want. This guy can do ANYTHING as evidenced by his discography. It's not on him, it's a collective vision. Trust

So I actually do have an Advanced Diploma in audio engineering so there's my context to my comment. The production isn't actually wrong (it's done quite well), I just think that in terms of the mixing, stylistically it's actually closer to that of a top 40 track. The highs are quite pronounced, the vocals are generally louder and the mids are scooped. I get the feeling there was a specific artistic decision to have the record sound this way.

right? I guess they're looking for hardcore riffs and lows and shit, but they're forgetting to just feel the music. If they can enjoy Discoveries and Singularity (the songs) they can enjoy this. Simple isn't always bad
@DudeSacha9 жыл бұрын
John Hasemeier People aren't really saying anything bad about the song, because it is good. But the mixing and mastering of the song is way off. One of the typical sounds of Northlane are the heavy guitar pieces, but at some points in the song you can't hear them so well.
@PabsIsSupaFLY9 жыл бұрын
Jason LovesPWD Not on this album, they're using a few capo tunings which is why this is tuned a bit higher in some sections. But they are still using their Open F tuning on some tracks
@PabsIsSupaFLY9 жыл бұрын
Jason LovesPWD I believe on the record they put the capo on the third fret while in Open F tuning, so the low string would be G#, if that makes any sense haha. By the looks of the video I don't think they're using a capo, so they probably just set the guitar in the tuning that it would be in if it were to have the capo on, or instead of relying on the capo for the open sections they're just going to do the fretting themselves

Dylan Shore I think they're going for a "check out Marcus" vibe in the mix... tbh, his cleans rock, his screams, as so many have said, are pretty meh, but I think if they were blended a bit better with the instruments that would kinda make up for it. Reuben Boyle this song could quite possibly be a masterpiece with Adrian's input... that's what makes listening to it so painful. If you go back and listen to songs like worldeater and even quantum flux... those instrumentals were damned good but nothing "otherworldly" until you add in Adrian... that kid had a way of literally taking heavy music and transcending it above anything else out there musically speaking. He had a gift of expression that very few if any can really emulate/duplicate.
@ReubenBoyle9 жыл бұрын
InfinitePotential I have to agree about Adrian. I don't like to stick anyone on this god-like/hero status as a vocalist but really Adrian brought something to the table that not many vocalists could. Northlane instrumentally was still highly enjoyable. Amazing infact and when the deluxe edition came out of their album, I listened to it endlessly and even listened to it again today but truly Adrian took it to the next level. Its sad to say but I don't think I know many vocalists who in their field could emulate that same element. I really hate having to agree on this because I'd love to encourage Northlane and Marcus esp to do the best they can and that what they're doing is good but really its just below par compared to the legacy left.

I can't help but feel disappointed in the direction they chose to pursue. Yes, the mixing could be better, but I don't think that more exciting production would make this song less stale. When my friend first showed me Dispossession, I was blown away by the innovative riffs and rhythms. I was blown away by songs like Scarab on the following album, where everyone in the band was playing their hearts out. Rot and this song just kind of chug along to me, feeling lifeless in the context of what I know they're capable of. I think as a whole, the band has taken the backseat to the new vocalist in a big way, but without really allowing him to shine either. I can feel the level of talent in this group, but not a lot of it is coming through in these new tracks.

Cuyler Trapp Why does he need to explain it? He never said it was bad or anything, so there's nothing to justify. Bradley S It depends, I agree for sam carter though ! those highs in alpha omega for example !! But for the majority of people, it's the lows that wreck your voice, for example BMTH, oli stopped screaming and started yelling all the time because it was less strain on his voice (paradoxically imo)

I don't know heaps about the technical side of music, but in terms of everyone talking about the mixing/mastering being bad I have to agree. Like the intro is great and then as soon as the vocals come in I feel I have to turn the volume down because the audio level for the vocals is too high, and it's drowning out the sound of the instruments, but then by the end of the song (like 2:40) the vocals, to me, seem more on the level they should be with the music. I like this more than Rot as I feel this is more creative and innovative and less generic, but the post production has really let it down.

Brad Mitchell You really think youtube audio comp changes the levels of the tracks? XDDD
@bradmitchell93079 жыл бұрын
JanTomas123 I never said it did, the mixing and mastering is fine, I've listened to the non ridiculously compressed version on my studio monitors and it's absolutely fine XDDD
@jacknorman91419 жыл бұрын
JanTomas123 yes KZbin crushes all dynamics of an audio track whether it be a song or spoken work. Hence why people could be getting a false representation of the mix.

You know Northlane, take it as a very strong compliment, I think alot of us expected more then this after the last two albums. Underwhelming according to your past records. Rot was different but still held its own. Ra was meh and thought it was alot of half-ideas poorly written. Now this? Eh. I'm a huge northlane fan and it makes me sad that after this song I'm not really excited for the new album.

Spacey production over punchy production. I think they're trying to abandon their metalcore past, we all have to progress at some point.

Is it me or northlane lost 400% of the punch they used to have ? Am I deaf or this mix is flat as fuck ?

Matt ROULAND As a producer/engineer one of the first thing you learn is how to judge a mix relative to its 'loudness'. As an example - you listen to a mix at its loudest audible level (within reason) and its lowest audible level, to balance the levels of all the tracks evenly. Now do me a favour and turn this track down to its lowest audible level, and what do you hear? Yes, that's right, Drums (mainly) and some vocals. No Guitars or Bass. Now do the opposite and turn this track up to it's highest audible level (within reason) and what do you hear? Yes, that's right, Drums! (very prominently) and the rest of the instruments and vocals at indifferent levels. It’s no secret that this album was rushed (please review at the Node Series). The song ideas were birthed during touring and were fleshed out during a set ‘recording window’. This might be a perfect example of a record label(s) release without being vetted within the record label(s) itself. It feels as though the label(s) gave the band freedom to release as they saw fit. In some cases, this works however, in this case, it hasn’t. What was needed (which I doubt actually happened) was an external review from an engineer (mix/mastering) that provided the label(s) feedback. I understand the notion of giving a band the ‘artistic freedom’ they require however, that should not extend to the way a record is heard across all frequencies (car, stereo, radio…) There are examples of artists that are great engineers in their own right but I don’t think that the same can be said for the members of Northlane (no offence). With all that being said, I don’t put any blame on Will Putney either. He is the man in the middle after all. Considering that Jon Deiley worked his magic and pushed Northlane into uncharted territory, I feel as though Will was caught off guard somewhat and had to do the best he could with what was presented to him. In other words, the new sound was new for Will, and he mixed the record to his strengths… This also says a lot about Northlane, they have defied the ‘norm’ and put a record out that is ‘different’ in nature (of their known sound) and is breaking them away from the over-saturated genre. I like the direction Northlane are heading and wish them all the best as they are still relatively young in their careers. Record labels please take notice and ensure that the bands and material you are promoting are at the highest level that they should be… RC

okay ! thx for the info :) ! actually I think that the mix is pretty good and everything sounds good and clear... but I feel like something is missing maybe because i'm not used to this yet !
@fotd20109 жыл бұрын
Matt ROULAND Its missing the low end. The low end (60hz and below) was cut out so the volume could be increased without distortions which mainly come from the low end hitting the master compressor harder than other frequencies and making the mix pump. This mix has 0 pump. I would also like to add that the low end the mix does have is up around the 100hz mark which would lead me to believe they used a plugin called waves maxxbass. It basically tricks you into thinking there is more low end than there actually is by taking the original bass signal and increasing the higher frequency harmonics of it. So its basically fake low end. It sounds good if you don't cut all of the original low end out, but not the way in which was used on this mix.

The production is really bugging me. The song is cool, but everything sounds so terribly compressed and the screams sound like they're coming out of a vaccum cleaner. Not sure what Putney was thinking, but this song lacks any sort of punch production wise. They've yet to beat "Rot" IMO.
