A New Zealander here and someone who has struggled with mental health and alcoholism. Fortunate enough to see Gazza at Ibrox as a kid and still have his signature on the programme. A legend of the game and pleasure to watch on the field. Sorry your dad and “friends” weren’t better for you. Go well. We love ya.

we in SW England had a guest from Whangeri nr Auckland - a crazy biker called Max . I was surprised to discover he supported Man U but having found him in tears on our sofa one August morning in 2003 because the All Blacks had lost a WC semi final , to take his mind off the situation i suggested he come to watch our local Div 3 team AFC Bournemouth at home that afternoon. In 30 years of going to Dean Court ground I’d never had such a Hoot ( as he’d say) as this extremely drunk New Zealander entertained the thousand or so supporters in our stand after his discovering probably the only Australian in the entire place was sitting in the seats in front of us….he topped the game off with an impromptu Hakka upon a gravel mound in the car park to applause from B’mouth & Peterborough Utd supporters alike. Hang in there 😁👍

What type of father knowing his professional athlete son has a drink problem would accompany him on a flight across the world to a new & last professional job would not only drink champagne on the flight in front of him but go missing and turn up two weeks later with a bottle of whiskey!!! The presenter said his father would accompany Gaza anywhere around the world ........ more like sponge off him all oveer the world!!! As a father your job is to "watch and protect" your son from all his demons and vices, not add to them!! This is a man who Gazza idolised - What a total embarrassment of a father!!! As a teenager who grew up watching Gazza play and someone who understands what it is to live with mental health problems. This documentary perfectly captures the impact of emotional dysregulation or ED which is a typical manifestation of many Mental Disorders. I have always been able to relate to Gazza. But it must have been horrible going through Bipolar Disorder and being hounded and harassed by the worlds and especially the English press 😡 Gazza was a genius with a ball at his feet! It was a privilege watching him take the field! A talent that will never be seen again. Equal to the old stars like Zidane. New players show flashes of Gazza like Bellingham. But there’s only one Paul Gascoigne!

Sad to see what can become of people with their mental health, all you can wish for is they get the help they need and they learn to make the best of life. He is, IMHO, the most naturally talented English-born footballer in history, and would, at his best, have played into any world cup first 11 of any country in any era. That includes Brazil '70. Wish he'd signed for Man U instead of Spurs, he''d have had Sir Alex as a surrogate dad, and Sir Bobby as a surrogate uncle to take him fishing. Man U would've won the league a lot earlier and England might have had a captain they missed out on.

Ah, panic attacks. Poor lad; I know how scary that shit can be when you don't really understand what's happening to you, when you're afraid that you're experiencing a heart attack or a stroke. I had my first one in my uni's library. I rushed into the shitter to try to gather myself. Then I remembered that Elvis died on the toilet. I didn't want peeps to find me that way so I got up, dried of the sweat as best I could, and went off to class. It was only five years later that I humbled myself enough to accept counselling and find a way to constructively deal with the problem. I didn't have addiction problems. I suspect that made it easier for me to solve my problem, so I have a tonne of sympathy for the lad who was managing a variety issues in addition to the panic and anxiety.
