NORTHSEAKAYAK

Күн бұрын

People see us paddling, surfing, training on rescue techniques, doing offshore trips etc. with our sea kayaks, often wondering what safety equipment we carry. Should things go wrong we like to have options. That is why we’re not just carrying one piece of safety equipment. We are carrying a lot of stuff with us, and most important, we train with it so we can use it flawless in a real distress situation. The equipment we are using is high quality, functional and waterproof. We have field tested a lot of inferior material during the first years of our sea kayaking adventures, which has costed us a lot of money. Finally, we have the perfect kit that will back us up for sure should things go wrong.

Oooooh, our first thumbs down has arrived only 11 minutes after posting this video, where we have put in a lot of effort!! Thank you! Since it is always the same person doing this, we think you are a very experienced paddler that knows a lot of things way better than we do, so please enlighten us with your knowledge and tell us what it is we are doing wrong? Or second option, you are maybe a bittered, jealous and very hatefull person with a lot of shortcomings? Anyway, we do like that you keep doing this.... it means that you are following us, and that somewhere deep down you do like our vids.... All the best, team NORTHSEAKAYAK. :-)

They’re just envious. I love your vids. They always put me in the mood to paddle. Just this summer I bought my own (first) kayak; all 16’11” of her lol. North Shore Atlantic. She’s great to do big rivers in. As for the thumb downer, ignore and don’t feed the trolls. Just paddle. Cheers from 🇨🇦

NORTHSEAKAYAK I have many of the items for longer day trips, but will add PLB, ear buds, Fitness wrap/plastic; following -have these around: carabiner + line, Navisafe, wet tissue, eye drops, towline, CPR mask, parachute flare; the rest I have for extended. If it’s a longer day trip, always ready to stay overnight - bivouac sack, extra clothes, fire starter, dry food, pot, stove. I live in Western Washington and kayak in the San Juan Islands, Vancouver Island & inland waters and lakes, so always ready for cold water, so have drysuit for cold waters, warm boots, warm clothes & towel for day trips. We have lots of current, rips, and wind at times. Thank you for the new suggestions! My usual ‘exercise’ is two-three miles near shore in shallow saltwater, or smaller lakes, so minimal stuff, but I can see why you have some of the items for the 1-2 hour trip I don’t usually carry.

I just thought i would add some positive feed back , i reposted your video to our little group Paddlesports Trip Planning . One of the biggest things for the amateur kayaker , is our lack of checking what is new, ( kind of have to go by word of mouth) Many times you have shown new items for safety that i have not heard of or seen in any of our outfitters . We also don't have the time to keep up with searching the internet , especially us older paddlers . I would rather paddle than search of stuff on the net . So thanks for taking the time to keep us in the loop . There is always something on the paddlers wish list. Thumbs up

Hi Klaus, thanks for your reply and glad you like our video. Yes, I understand that it can be difficult to search and find good quality equipment. I am happy to see that I am not the only one who carries so much safety stuff, in fact you even carry a little bit more than I do. Here in Spain virtually all my kayak friends say that is is not necessary at all to hardy carry any safety item! They only would do that during an exam. But I totally agree that it is a very good habit to always bring the same (complete-) kit, so you KNOW what you have in any given situation. Great video.

Awesome video. What's the make/model of the diving light/flare? I've been looking for a light that is very reliable that I can have mounted on my pfd and preferably easily turn on with one hand if I end up in the water at night, and doubling as a flare as well would be great. Also, I'd happily watch a hour long video of you narrating a rambling description of each item, why you chose it, what it does, pros and cons, personal examples of how you've used it, etc. Maybe release a longer but with less editing work version for us gear nerds? :-)

Hi Benjamin, we didn't put on the brand name like with all the rest of the equipment because it has no brand name on it. We bought it in a diving shop, and I know some marine chandlers are also selling this. Hope this helps? At this moment we are not planning any longer videos, time is limited...😉 However, we did a live interview on Facebook where people could ask is a lot of questions. Still to be found in the P&H Owners Club on FB. All the best!😊👌

Very much like your video's! Very interesting stuff you carry with you, including doubles. I would trade the whistles for others, like the mini Vox, which are the simplest and much louder. Does every member of your group carry all that stuff with him/her? A hand pump, not secured in your kajak is not the best option imo. I prefer a built in foot pump for self rescue or a built in hand pump for others to rescue you. Much better! Spare sun glasses is also good to carry. As for pyrotechniques; hand flares are most important in combination with a vhf. Rockets are often not noticed. Quality of pyrotechniques have gone down over the years, so they really must be of recent date! Can you replace a broken or lost hatch, round or oval? Don't you take spare clothing with you, other than a poncho or anorak?

A well put together and informative video, BUT (there is always a but!), I do think that you could do with a bit of rationalisation - that boat must weigh a ton. For example do you need a strobe and an electronic flare - they are pretty much one and the same, two whistles, and emergency blanket and emergency poncho. There is a really good book Extreme Alpinism by Mark Twight in which he explores the concept of "fast and light" - travelling safely and quickly because you're not weighed down by a lot of excess kit, he also admits were he got it wrong and paired back too much, but it's all food for thought. But a good way to start the discussion - thanks again for the work you put in to these videos.
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat, Thank you! We know that is seems like a lot of stuff, we're very much aware of that. But we rather a a thing or two too much (as a matter of speaking) than one thing too short when it really comes to an emergency situation. It all weighs when carrying the boat, but you don't feel this once on the water. All the best!😊💦👌

Hi Kjel, Thank you! This can be used for several things. We show it during our Sea Kayak Training Camps, have a look at the last videos and you will see, there is a section "SKTC" on our channel which makes it easier to search. Is also usefull for wound dressing because you can apply pressure and it works on wet skin. Also usefull for making seals (tear, or broken hatch cover). Use your imagination, low cost and very usefull. Hope this helps? All the best!👌😁👍

Another excellent video. A few points, how about putting the phone in an Aquapac type pouch so you can use it on the water. Is the rubber sheet for emergency hatch repair? I have seen that done with cling film or I carry plastic sheet and a bungee cord (other uses too). Lastly, I have had a navigate for about 7 years and the plastic has gone “sticky” and horrible - that was a bit of a letdown on a good product. Keep the videos coming!
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! The phone is waterproof out of its own... or it should be but I trust on that. Is also the reason why it is in the day hatch instead of PFD. All the best, have fun out there!😊💦👌

@@Northseakayak I was wondering which size PFD you wear? It looks like the L version has more floatation but based on the size chart would be big for me (and I think you). It looks like a great PFD, and I like the high visibility green colour. I'm toying with getting one despite it being not approved for use in Canada. And many thanks for your videos, I've watched this one, and others, a good few times since it came out.
@Northseakayak

Hi @@AndrewMoizer , I'm wearing the size L/XL, that is the middle size and it fits me perfect. Think the size are measure a bit small. Hope this helps? Reason that it does not get approved in USA and Canada is because they filling all pockets for the test. The Hiko has a large pocket on the back for the Camelback, reason why it doesn't pass the test altough it has the same specifics as other, aproved models and brands. Weird that they do it this way. These vests are equally safe.

@@Northseakayak Thanks for the reply. That is very strange and unfortunate about the testing. I agree that it looks like a great PFD, and I really like that it is available in the hi-vis colour. From what I've seen it seems to be one of the few PFD's really designed for sea kayak use. I currently use a Salus Proto which is doing the job, but a bit short on pockets and being designed for whitewater use first is a bit bulky for re-entry moves. I would also prefer a front zip. I also use a quick release tow belt when guiding day trips, about the only provision the Aquatic doesn't have. It does have a pocket for a bladder which I use and find very convenient. I would say that the risks of wearing an 'unapproved' PFD are quite low, any officials would have to be really looking to give you a hard time if they were looking at the labels! I know several people who use Vaikobi PFD's and have not had issues thus far. So I might get one regardless. And as long as there's room inside the boat stuffing any crappy approved PFD in there should make things legal! Thanks again for the reply, and all your videos. They are a big help.

A quick question: Can you provide a name/brand for the pyrotechnical flare that screws open and reassembles with the empty tube as a handle? Never saw that one before, but it appears to be pretty waterproof. How do you think it compares to the one-piece Comet handheld flares stored in your day hatch, in terms of handling (cold, wet fingers or gloves), and performance?

Hi Dimitri. I have a question about the Navilight you show in this video. How do you attach it to your kayak? When I checked with the company, they said the way to mount it on the deck was to drill holes in the deck and mount a bracket there. I don’t really want to put more holes in my boat. Thank you for your help.

Hi Warren! Don't bother making holes in your shiny boat! I put the Navilight on top of my head: easy with the magnet under my cap. And it's the highest point, and I'm not blinded by it. Also, the light shines all around without obstructions. Hope this helps?

Where do you recommend storing your bilge pump?
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 9 ай бұрын
In our team most paddler store it behind their seat in the cockpit. No way of loosing it in rough conditions and it is out of the way when doing rescues. Everybody has his/her own safety equipment in our team, so there is no issue for the need of immediate acces to the pump. If needed, we always pick the pump of the casualty (who's always out of the cockpit). We know that in certain systems the leader needs to have this item on deck in case of emergency. This is because only the leader carries certain safety equipment (and the tourists around not). Hope this sheds some light on why we put it there?

You probably carry too much for "in case" situation and have a lot of redundancy. For example, your towing belt may be configured for both long and short tow. Less ropes on the deck. You really want to sort out what you have used in the past and stick to it. I understand that the set varies depending on the situation - you may be in expedition, surf play, guiding a group of neophytes etc. You have missed the most important safety gear for cold water - dry suit. For the radio I would recommend at least nail polish on the battery contacts. Better - nail polish and place in waterproof bag. I went through 3 units in 5 years before I got the trick. Contacts corrode and controls are getting stuck no matter how good you rinse it. A lot of lights. You should not be on the water during night due to boat traffic or surf. But everyone taking their own risks. Peace.
@Northseakayak
@Northseakayak 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergey, My tow line is configured with an extra hook (which is not displayed in this video) for long/short tow. The video is about safety equipment, not clothing. We have made a seperate video "Cold Water Safety Test" which goes about the importance of good clothing (to the water temperature). And the radio... well, I had the same problem as you mention with other brands. This one is my 3th and lasts without waterproof bag or nail polish. About night paddling, there is nothing wrong with that. But, we consider it according to the weather conditions and boat traffic. Cheers!😊👌
