I can quickly see any unusual purchases and contact the employee who will tell me why they made the purchase, it does two things, first I can keep notes on odd purchases so I know which client they go with and second my employees know that I watch our business funds.

I'm an accountant who has worked for small businesses. Don't even trust your mother with your cash. TRUST NO ONE. It isn't personal; it's business. You're not "paranoid". You're not "unappreciative". Treat everyone who has access to your cash/credit as though they are trying to steal from you. Guard your cash/credit as though your life depends on it because it does!!! I worked a contract for a small business and the owner was going to give to me his signature stamp! My jaw dropped. I told him to put it in the safe. PS: Also, don't hire anyone to keep your books who doesn't understand and implement internal controls.

I worked on various contract assignments trying to catch people like the woman in this video accused of embezzlement. They feel entitled to this money. A lot of times its a few people. My job came with some inherent dangers. My fairly new car was keyed, I was threatened with being beaten, strange calls on my landline, etc...sometimes the rot came from the top, i.e. controller etc....

I had a family member went through that years ago. Their staff bookkeeper was taking all kinds of vacations while they were working 60 hours a week to try and stay afloat. Luckily they happened to get a bid on a big job while the bookkeeper was on one of his many vacations. As part of it they had to allow the books to be audited. It took the audit or 5 minutes to uncover $15,000 in theft. By the time the bookkeeper got back to town there was already an arrest warrant. Over 200 Grand gone

In the late 1970s IBM did a hush hush audit for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team felt that ticket sales revenue was being siphoned off but had no proof. A team of IBM systems engineers worked weeks before uncovering and understanding the scam. The Dodgers fired many people in the ticket office. But kept the theft from MLB because they would have had to do a complete redo of the books and write checks to all the other teams for shorted revenue. Baseball teams split revenue of home games 60-40 with the visiting team. Theft was in the millions.

I did consulting to small business owners for 10 years. 80% of them had no idea how much was in their checking account and had zero internal financial controls. The number one flaw was not having spending limits for employees. I worked with a company that almost went under due to outright fraud by the book keeper. The D.A. told him he'd pursue charges, but given that he had awarded her bonuses annually and sat 30 feet away from her in the same office for years, a jury probably won't rule in his favor. The kicker was that after he elected to not press charges after she was fired, her attorney contacted him and said he needed to work him to move her well funded 401k out of his management. How the guy never had a heart attack was beyond me.

Why wasn't her husband also arrested and booked as an accomplice? The parish has had 4 years to charge him. Why was she released the same day on a $50,000 bond? If she were held in jail this case wouldn't move so slowly through the courts and delaying wouldn't be her essential tactic. It must be the consequence of small-town, rural Louisiana law enforcement.

Her defense attorney knows how to play the system. Her attorney is pushing for continuances so the statute of limitations (SOL) runs. *HIS* attorney needs to file a motions to either, deny any continuance, change judges (they make the decision to on granting a continuance), or try to change venue (which probably won't be granted but try anyway). This is ridiculous. If that woman and her husband as property, put a lien on it.

Why would a civil suit conflict with the criminal trial? He has the receipts of the stolen funds. Sue her and her husband, win and immediately attach everything they own.

Mr. Wilson if you see this just remember, you did it once, you can do it again. You don't seem like a guy that can retire, even if this never happened.
