For anybody wondering the coatings on the gun aren't purely aesthetic. The gold color is TiN coating and the black is I think TiAlN. Titanium has a tendency to gall and those coatings serve as a lubrication factor to the gun while also surface hardening it. The coatings were probably chosen with that in mind and the aesthetics are just an awesome byproduct.

FWIW: Three designs were accepted and issued as a result of the West German police trails. These were the Walther P5, the SIG-Sauer P6, and the HK P7. The Walther P5 was fielded by the Landespolizei in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wurttemberg. The SIG-Sauer P6 was fielded by the Bundesgrenzschutz, Bereitschaftspolizei, Bundeszollpolizei, Bundesbahnpolizei, Bundespostpolizei, and the Landespolizei in West Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein, Hansestadt-Hamburg, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hessen. I have been kicking myself since then for not buying both of them. It was some years later and either gun digest or a guns and ammo article that made me realize what i had passed up.

Back in the 1980’s I remember advertising and articles from Smith and Wesson concerning their Nyclad ammunition,. As best I remember, it was limited to law enforcement. Again according the memory, the round had a special load and case. The Nyclad round was accused by some in Congress to be “cop killer” bullets, on that they would act in a similar manner to the Teflon Coated bullets, similarly marketed in the same time frame. At the time, Teflon and Nylon coated bullets were purported to simply sail through the new Kevlar bullet proof vest newly in vogue with police departments (and in Hollywood). I don’t know if this is true, but a police Capt. in charge of training at the time told me that the Teflon and Nylon Coated bullets were designed to eliminate the danger of lead exposure on indoor shooting ranges largely used by large urban police departments.
@kbar1506 жыл бұрын
Charles Adams it was sold by federal if memory serves. They had civilian sales but probably not as much as they would like
@SinisterGerbils6 жыл бұрын
I have some ex-LE Federal Nyclad. From what I've read it was designed to eliminate lead fouling in the bore.
@JerryEricsson6 жыл бұрын
I worked on the PD back when this was introduced. It was made so officers could fire on indoor ranges without the danger of inhaling lead particles. Before the introduction, it was not uncommon at all to be issued a box or two of full lead wad-cutters to practice with every month, but when the scientists decided this was dangerous the nyclad ammo came out to answer their concerns. Our Department never bothered since we did all of our training on outdoor ranges, even in the sub zero winter months when we needed the city to plow the road to the shooting range for our practice sessions. Back in those days our issue firearms were the Model 19 Smith and Wesson in .357 Magnum, but the training was all done with lower pressure .38 Special, usually reloads from Black Hills Ammo.
@TheWarmotor5 жыл бұрын
It's pretty funny, I've got two cases of hot load, hardened steel-core penetrator 5.56 I'll take the pepsi challenge with a 9mm coated with whatever you want to coat it with. Bought it at WalMart.
@troy94775 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. As i recall, the Teflon coating was used on some armor piercing ammo, like the old KTW, because the projectiles were harder than steel (tungsten maybe?). Obviously, running a harder than steel projectile at high velocity down a gun barrel would quickly damage it. The Teflon was to protect the barrel. Contrary to uninformed belief at the time, Teflon did not allow it to "slip through" kevlar vests. The Nyclad "Chiefs Special" 38 load was popular for awhile because the coating allowed the bullet to be cast very soft, virtually guaranteeing at least some expansion from a snubby. There was some discussion of this in the gunzines of the time

Norton was a local company to me and I am familiar with their all stainless steel TP-70 which was a licensed copy of a pistol produced by Korriphilia as Ian mentioned. My guess would be that this was an attempt to produce another licensed copy of what I’m sure they (Norton) was hoping would be a light weight concealed carry pistol in a decent caliber, I’m almost willing to bet the cost of these attempts coupled with cheaply made “Saturday night specials” flooding the market around the same time (mid-1970’s) is what caused them to finally close their doors. A company in Florida also going by the name of Norton produced a garbage version of the TP-70 for awhile and then I believe American Arms in Provo Utah (not North America Arms, but possibly related) took over production for awhile.

The nylon-coated Nyclad design was developed by Smith & Wesson back in the late 1970s when they manufactured their own line of ammunition. Originally, it was marketed as a cheaper alternative to jacketed projectiles while reducing airborne lead exposure, particularly with indoor ranges. When S&W got out of ammo manufacturing in the 1980s, Federal Cartridge bought the patent rights to the Nyclad. Federal's new Syntech line is sort of Nyclad 2.0, but they have replaced the nylon with a different polymer.
@con6lex6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Watters I have some Nyclad in 38 Special. I thought the design was for hollow points. The lead was soft, to aid expansion, and the blue plastic coating prevented leading in the barrel, which would happen easily with softer lead.
@danielwatters12036 жыл бұрын
The S&W Nyclad patent (US4328750) mentions the reduction of airborne lead and lead fouling more often than aiding expansion. So did their advertisements at the time. In fact, S&W had offered their RN, SWC, and full wadcutter loadings in the Nyclad line roughly a year before introducing the Nyclad hollowpoints. When Federal announced their acquisition of the Nyclad patent in March 1982, they also noted the benefits of reducing fouling and lead polution before the benefits of expansion and feeding in semi-auto pistols.

@gustavmeyrink_2.06 жыл бұрын
A quick google showed that the nyclad ammo was just regular, standard pressure ammo in a variety of calibres. The metal jacket of normal ammo was replaced with nylon. People who used it report excellent feeding to the extent that guns with feeding issues may well work flawlessly with this ammo. Lacking a steel jacket the projectile deforms easily and reliably and also fragments regularly but not every time. It was recommended for home defense as it is less likely to penetrate walls fully. Rumour has it that it was pulled due to pressure from law enforcement agencies and forensics because the traces rifling left on the projectile could not be used to identify the gun it was fired from. It is available again allegedly using a differernt kind of nylon which does mark enough to pinpoint the gun.
