Norway has a unique and very picturesque nature and when going on a trip it isn't easy to choose what to visit first! We are confident that driving along one of the 18 selected roads included in the list of scenic routes in Norway is always the right decision!
Typically, such roads pass through landscapes rich in natural beauty. There are scenic routes along the Atlantic coast, along the islands, along the fjords, and in the highlands.
In this video, we invite you to take a ride with us along road number 51 (Fv51), which runs along the high mountain plateau of Valdresflye. This plateau is located in the easternmost part of the Jotunheimen mountains.
The length of the road is 49 kilometers, and the highest point is at an altitude of 1389 meters above sea level. Traveling along Valdresflye for 49 kilometers you will climb 500 meters.
This is why we love this route very much because in June, when hot summer sets in in the valleys, you can play in the snow on the 51st road and enjoy the cool breath of the mountains.
Our journey begins near the Beitostølen ski resort. And despite the summer, life is in full swing here, hikers stay in the ski huts, and music can be heard from the bars.
Along the Valdresflye road, there are many small parking areas where you can stop, walk, and enjoy the view. We always take binoculars with us, as there are herds of reindeer grazing around the Jotunheimen mountains. And this time we were lucky to meet them!
By the way, there is a fairly high probability of seeing reindeer in early summer or spring. They go down to the valleys for fresh grass, because in the mountains all the vegetation is still hidden by caps of snow.
Also on the Valdresflye plateau, reindeer herders bring their herds for summer grazing. There are approximately 25,000 wild reindeer in Norway and approximately 250,000 domesticated ones.
We gradually climb higher up the plateau and pass by a mountain called Bitihorn, we decide to stop by Lake Bygdin, where a tourist boat named after this mountain sails in the summer.
It’s June, very early spring for the highlands, Lake Byugdin has not yet filled, and the Bitihurn boat is resting comfortably on the shore and waiting for the short tourist season to begin!
We rise higher and notice that ice appears on the lakes and snow along the road. It's still winter here. So it’s time to stop by the cafe, located at the highest point of the road and called Flye 1389.
Delicious waffles are baked here, a favorite delicacy of all Norwegians. Over the many years of living in Norway, we began to eat waffles together with Brunost. This is a special type of cheese produced in Norway. It has a light brown color and a sweetish taste. By the way, an interesting fact is that few people like it the first time :) Have you tried Brunost?
Our next stop is near a huge stone stone - Steinplassen. In Norway, it is customary to mark the path with pebbles lying on top of each other. And also the Jotunheimen highlands are the birthplace of legends about trolls and giants. A great place to think about whether this is a creation of nature or perhaps the beginning of a path to visit the trolls.
The road gradually descends and the snowdrifts are replaced by green grass and trees. Stormy rivers roar and carry meltwater into the valleys. And the walking trails invite you to new adventures. In the highlands, the weather changes quickly. A strong wind arose and even waves appeared on the blue lake Gjende. But the reindeer went out to drink. This is a rare shot and we tried our best to capture it even though the tripod tried to knock over the strong wind.
We really hope you enjoy our new video! After all, the Norwegian Highlands are always bright, harsh, and at the same time unforgettable!
By the way, 51 roads are closed for the winter, and in this video, you can see what Valdresflye looks like in winter:
