Our nature - full of Norwegian myths; beautiful, but life-threatening and very, very grim. It´s full of mysterious creatures and beings who have one thing in common; they are looking for you! They want to kill and eat you!
In this haunting video, recorded in a mystifying landscape, you will meet 4 of our most common and well-known beasts and beings. The first one is the most famous; Trolls. They are as old as the planet and they are all over the landscape: on mountains, in the wood and behind every rock or hill. They come in all sizes and their nose is their most powerful sense. Why? Because they can sniff us humans out - and when they get the smell of us, they start hunting us down. Chapters below.
The next one might seem like a beautiful woman. Actually, the most beautiful in the world. When you meet her, you might think you are lucky. But you are not. Even though she is both good and evil - as a man you are a lost soul if she sees you first. She will drag you down to her underworld, and you will be lost forever.
Out of the woods and close to the sea, you might think you are safe. Think again. Down in the depths, another horrible and mind blowing creature is waiting for an opportunity to kill you. The ghost has a single goal in life: to pull you into the water, below the surface and all the way to the bottom.
The last creature is so disgusting, bad and unfortunately far too relevant here and now today. She is descended from an ancient plague, the Black Death. She sweeps through the landscape and stops outside all houses and homes. She may be outside yours now. If she is, you must call 911 immediately.
Through these myths you get a good insight into the soul life of Norwegians. Even though this is 2021 and Christianity came to the country almost a thousand years ago - Norwegians have never let go of their fairy tales, legends and ancient stories. Alive and kicking. Some of them myths, some of them from folktales

I'm a huge fan of cryptozoology and folklore and follow a lot of podcasts and stories about bigfoot, fairies, glimmer-man, dogman, chupacabra, skinwalkers, gnomes, and all inbetween.

Scotland has a huge assortment of mythical beasties, especially relating to water; Sprites, Wraiths, Selkies & Kelpies to name a few. One such group Each Uisge (pronounced ee-ach ooshka) translates to water horse. The story goes these creatures come onto land & present themselves as the most beautiful animal. Anyone who sees them are enchanted by their magnificence. The horses appear friendly and so the unsuspecting person will be tempted to climb onto their back to go for a gallop across the moors, but...each uisge has other ideas! The creature's coat is covered in a sticky substance & the rider cannot dismount even if they want to. Each Uisge heads for the deepest loch taking the terrified rider underwater.... where they are devoured.

They have a creature who lives in the bent tubes of toilets. This creature comes out, and drags Norwegian children down, if they are bad. There was an urban myth of the suicide girl from the seventies. Suicide is problem in Norway, like everywhere. Back in the late seventies, there was spat of suicides, of young men who had no friends, of families. It was said, these men were seen with a pretty young girl, like she was their girlfriend. It was thought, she was crazy girl, killing men. There is older Norwegian urban myth of the Visitor. In the long nights of Norwegian winters, people will find themselves working late, or they will be home alone. Someone will knock on door, and want in the building. They are not frightening, but they are odd. It's said, the visitor will some times look like an older woman, with little white dog. She will knock, and want in the building. The visitor will want in, and have a bad excuse, like "It's her home, and you have to let her in." It doesn't always look like a old woman. Sometimes it looks like a child, but they always want in. You never let them in, because the will walk in the other room, or go in a closet, and then vanish. The bad part is, if they come in, something bad will happen in that building, or home. I knew more Norwegian urban myths, but I forgot them. Sorry.

yes, even the Sami used to scare their little kids with tales of the Stallo or Juovlagállát, the human looking troll ... and they even told the kids the Northern LIghts were coming to get them ... So the children would stay closer to home and be safe!

A favorite from my spot in the world was the legend of Sleepy Hollow. A Hessian soldier who lost his head from a cannon ball is cursed to roam the forests and the roads of New York State, looking for his head. If he finds you, since he still is evil, he will take off your head.

I grew up next to Salem Ma.US. A lot of people still believe in witches. It's a very big thing there. On Halloween many thousands go to Salem. I grew up down the street from the Hale House in Beverly. It's Reverend hung "witches". Most of your trolls are creepy but the sad old troll sitting on the rock made me want to feed him hot soup! My Norwegian grandparents told all the kids about the "ditch monster". Instead of saying, "don't play in the irrigation ditch because it can carry you away", they decided to scare the crap out of us. I'm 51 years old, and I still walk down the middle of the road, just in case something really does want to reach out and pull me under. I remember looking at their fairytale books and thinking those stories looked messed up. We grew up being scared of the Boogeyman. He punished naughty children. Werewolves, Dracula, Big Foot, Chupacabra, Sirens, Loch Ness monster, Banshee.

We have a small creek running through our little farmland. Our neighboring lady told her kids, and ours, too, about Ågdråga (the river monster, who drags you down in the river). Our kids believed in that monster, this story kept both them and the neighbor kids away from the creek. :D

In Patogonia, Argentina, we have our own version of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. Ours is called Nahuelito and it's supposed to live in the Nahuel Huapi Lake. It's like a giant snake with a hump.

Where I'm from in Louisiana, USA, the legend of the Rougarou is a very popular folktale. It's a werewolf like creature that roams the swamps. A Rougarou is born when a Catholic disobeys the laws of Lent for 7 years in a row. I love learning about folklore from other cultures. Louisiana and Norway in my opinion have some of the absolute best in terms of entertainment.

I live on the east coast of Canada, plenty of haunting stories, but the tale that always gives me shivers is the Indigenous tale of the Wendigo. This is a creature whose appetite for human flesh cannot be satiated.

Super fun video! I am from Slovakia, from the west. There is an area very close to me that is full of scary legends. It's a forest area called "Tribeč" and there have been many stories about paranormal activity and people have disappeared there mysteriously. Some people say that it's because of the mine holes which get covered with leaves and snow and when a person falls there, that's their death.

Is this why Norwegian American women are always obsessed with escaping and hiking in the woods? When I feel sad or overwhelmed in life -- I find myself leaving to a national park and wandering the woods with the deer and wild horses for hr's. Mine in 30 mins from me. After I come home in peace. My in-laws think it is quite weird, but I can not imagine a world where I cannot find a quiet forest.

We have scorpions, in Arizona and live in constant fear of close contact. We always wear shoes, never touch anything we can’t see, and shake packages, vigorously, after deliveries. But they will still get some people. I found one on the bed beside me, once. Never moved so fast in my life.

We weren't raised with mythological charactars, but as a child I invented them myself: When I was in bed, I had to hide under the blanket when a car passed the house and the headlights shone into my bedroom. It was a very bad man, who drove past the houses. He ate all the parts of the children he could see, when he searched the bedrooms with his flashlight. If he saw f.i. your hand: hand gone! I have slept with my head under the blanket for years. Also, there were two witches living in my parents bedroom. They looked exactly the same, which was a problem, because one was good and the other bad, but you never knew which one you had in front of you. In the Netherlands we have vrouw Holle, who lives in a world you can reach when you fall into a well. But she is an old women and doesn't have a tail, as far as I know. We have all sorts of mythical creatures that are common in Europe, but no trolls. We have the 'witte wieven', white ghostlike women who come out at night. They can fly. There are also 'dwaallichtjes' in the swamps, lights that try to trick you in leaving the path, so that you will drown in the swamp. They are the souls of unborn or unbaptised children. When a person has totally wrong ideas, we also call him (usually a him of course 😜) a 'dwaallicht' because he wil lead his followers the wrong way.

This was a superstition with really terrible consequenses. People in old times who had children with syndromes and diseases, often times would beat the poor babies in the hope that the Huldra and her people, the underground people, would feel sorry for their changeling and swap it back for the real child of the villagers.

Yeah! Love this!! Our fairies swap their babies for human ones too. Our local speciality is the Goathland Grim. We also have big black dogs. Sometimes they help lost people,sometimes they mean sorrow.

Great video, Guys! One of your best. In eastern NC, we have the Sea Hag, a witch-like creature that inhabits the waterways on the coast. She’s always hungry for children who have misbehaved and are outside after dark when they are supposed to be inside. She is stooped over, thin with long arms and claw-like hands. The feature that most identifies her is her wild mass of tangled hair. She is very scary and definitely someone to stay away from. I think if Mads asked her out, she would accept!

In Britain they have the legend of the changeling. The fairies sometimes steal a baby, from her crib and replace her with a fairy creature that looks the same, but it is mean and unruly and often dangerous.

In French-speaking Canada and nearby parts of the United States you have the Loup Garou, a kind of werewolf. No explanation needed there. Florida has the skunk-ape, a smaller version of Bigfoot or Sasquatch. In Appalachia you have stories of various "boggers" and "haints", bogeymen and ghosts. If you are walking in the woods or on a road at night and you come to a place that is foggy and cool you had better watch out, one of these malevolent spirits are about! At summer camp in Minnesota the counselors and older campers tried to terrorize us with stories of the Portage Strangler, who would roam the lakes and woods and steal whatever was left out, like camping gear or food, and if you confronted him he might kill you. But that is more like a real person and not supernatural. We don't need supernatural beings in the US, there are plenty of real and crazy people running about causing mayhem. They had a big party just a few months ago, did you hear about it?

Huldra is part of a larger ''group'' of mythological creatures in Norway known as ''Hulderfolket'' (Hulder people) or ''De underjordiske'' (the undergrounders). They may or may not be cathegorised as part of some ''troll'' family, since trolls aren't one specific thing, it's different kind of trolls and various troll species. But ''De underjordiske'' or ''Hulderfolket'' are forest creatures and spirits living inside the mountains and underneath the ground. Many of them can be looked as something similar to gnomes or goblins in appearance.

Thanks for the scary creatures video! Fun!! Everything beautiful is dangerous, it seems. The only mythical creature here in the US that was spoken of was the Sand Man. If you didn't go to sleep, he may harm you. If he visited you and you were already asleep, you were lucky that he only dropped some sand into your eyes.

Apparently trolls are too stupid to realize that occupied cabins are troll cafes. :D Oh, I thought the Huldra only lived at Kjosfossen during tourist season. Uh-oh, Nøkken will be after your Nikon. That was great fun. I love the old illustrations. Stories that were meant to scare the living daylights out of children. We were terrified of the creatures and loved the stories when we were kids.

That is a beautiful fairy tale book you have, I love the engravings. For a truly terrifying legend from my region, there is an native oral story/ history about "the battle between thunderbird and whale". The tale is the preservation of knowledge about tsunamis with warnings like if the sea unusually far out, head for high ground. The myth teaches all those things that people need to know, living along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where about every 250-400 years there is a giant earthquake and huge tsunami. Currently the last big quake was in 1700.

Outstanding scenery! So this is how Ronald and Mads maintain social distancing! Pesta sounds too much like Pesto, which I don't enjoy. Wonder if there's a connection :). Some of your trolls are cute, and some would terrorize children. Stories of cave ins, mine collapses, nightime roaming wild animals, pitchforks hiding in hay stacks, snakes, spiders, rockfalls, ice collapses in ponds, river undercurrents, and strangers-what better ways to keep your children near home? Grimm's Fairy tales were another bedtime favorite-and aptly named. Ronald and Mads, this was very entertaining! Now, if only You Tube could notify us of your videos...

Moody, haunting, scary, dramatic. And that's just Ronald! I'd be nervous out there in those twilight woods, you never know what's around the next tree. There are lots of stories of different creatures around the US. Like Bigfoot. Where I live, we have a local legend about "Chessie," a Loch Ness-like being that lives in the Chesapeake Bay!🦕 So far I've only seen whales, dolphins and surfacing submarines but I haven't given up on seeing Chessie someday!

Draugen has a brother here in America in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico. He is called the Under Toad. (under tow) My parents made sure that all us kids knew that the Under Toad would take us away and drown us if we got too far out while swimming.

Hi, Ronald, Mads latest post on FB must be the work of beasts and trolls. It looks as though a cyclone tore through Mads' apartment, and he is left to clean up the disaster area (kind of like the trees ripped from the ground in this video of yours). I think he needs some Dugnad from others with O.C.D. to bring his place back together. He did do a great job with his grout lines in his bath 😊, although I'd love to see how long it takes with the rest of the apartment (perhaps it will come together like he did with his Dad's place in Portugal?)... Mads deserves more Syden after this.

In India there are the Dakinis - mother goddesses and guardians of the path. They are dressed in glowing luminous gowns and they hide behind a dark gray green masks their faces ( like the gorgon mask )because they are too beautiful for a seeker to see. To see one is to receive a blessing on your path. They carry a staff or wand.
