@@Monika-uv2qp it is an old USAF surplus bag, it weighs a ton. So I only use it static camping, not backpacking. ThermaRest LuxuryMap pad to go under my bag, and a ThermaRest Zlite to go on the ground.I have a Jetboil flash cooking system. Alps Mountaineering Tasmanian 2 person 4 season tent. Alps Red Tail backpack. I’m looking into getting a ThermaRest Polar Ranger bag, it is only a -20f bag, but I will get some kind of a down filled poncho that doubles as a bag for a liner.

Experiment with different kinds of boots and also different leg coverings. When I'm in my Sorel pac boots, I feel like I'm invincible. Windproof/weatherproof pants also make a huge difference. I'm the kind of guy who heats up when he's moving, and I don't feel the cold, except on exposed areas of my face and hands. But as soon as I stop, my body cycles down really fast. So I have to stay busy until I either have a fire going or I'm getting in my sleeping bag. But when I'm hustling around, doing things, I just have to be careful about frost bite on my nose, cheeks and hands. I'm just a lizard person at rest.

I've been out like this in the snowy woods and discovered that it can be really beautiful one moment and really creepy the next. The good thing about heavy duty snow like this is that it tends to keep down bears and monsters so that you can sleep better.

They had fur, leather, and most of all, they had fire, and they kept that fire going, 24/7, which is a lot easier to do when you're traveling with a whole family or clan of more than one family. When you're out there, solo, there's nobody to throw sticks on the fire while you're sleeping. From time immemorial "exile" and "death" were the same word, because if you were left on your own, you were considered pretty much dead.

This man walks trough deep snow like he is walking on a beach. Effortlessly. And keep in mind when you film by yourself the trip is twice as long and sometimes three times as long. I thought the snowshoeing looked incredibly slow and cumbersome. Be lucky to cover a mile or two in one day, that way. You don't see many videos by guys who cross-country ski to their camp. If my dad's any indication, the guys who are the best at it learned it the hard way, and don't do that kind of shit for fun. Dad got his ski training up in Leadville, Colorado - Camp Hale, to be specific. As soon as he finished his hitch, the LAST thing he wanted to do was go snow camping! He did eventually buy some skis in his 40s and cover 40 miles in one day, just traipsing around for fun. But there was no way he was going to camp out there. He said "I work so I can have a warm house and just sit on my ass reading a book in my easy chair." I didn't have those experiences coming up, so to me, it was all fun and games, and proving to myself that I could do it, and just enjoying the outdoors. Dad grew up in the city. I grew up in a rural town, with Nature right outside the back door.

For those wondering why he dug a hole in the vestibule, it's to allow him to sit in the tent and easily remove his boots. That helps to prevent snow in the tent. PRO TIPS ISOBUTANE Isobutane canisters are not that great in winter because cold will contract the gas, so the stove will be less performant and can even not work at all. Either keep the canister in your jacket to warm it up before using it. Or use one of those toe warmers pads. They have a sticker under it, so you can stick it under the canister to keep the gas warm. MELTING SNOW It's best to compact the snow very hard in the pot and then to slowly warm it up to make water. This will avoid burning the pot and the water to have a bad taste. SNOW WALL & SHOVEL You can do like him and build a snow wall around your tent. However, if a lot of snow, you might end up all snowed in. That's, again, do like him and keep the shovel inside. VARIOUS Always have a knife at hand during a snowstorm. If your tent collapse, it may be like a vacuum seal and the tent very tight on you with absolutely no light. If unable to find the door and zipper quick, then you'll need to cut the tent to get out. You can also set a tarp, V-shape, over your tent using the trekking poles of tree branches and paracord as a ridgeline. This will help a lot by deflecting the snow and keeping you even warmer.

The winter cannisters are mostly propane which works very well in winter, it is good to have a little bit of water in your pot nefore adding snow to avoid burning of the pot.

@@NorwegianXplorer Maybe in your country, but in North America and France, the Isobutane canisters consist of 80% Butane and 20% Propane. Also, that's why no one in mountaineering is using isobutane canisters. Not even the Norwegian army for their winter operations.

@@NorwegianXplorer I just checked and the canister you're using is a Coleman Xtreme. Coleman claims the mix is 70% Butane / 30% Propane. So that helps during winter. However, the less fuel remaining in the canister, the lesser the performance will be. This is simple physics combining vaporization, and cold temperature/contraction.

This hole has a other function too. It allows the cold air to sink into it. Everyone in the Norwegian army knows the name of this hole. Something like “cold trench”

@@pal_lokomotivet2679 You're 100% right lokomotive :) This comes from the Inuits (Canada) and other people living in the Arctic and making igloos. Some may think the entrance is level with the ground and the bottom of the igloo, but it's not. It's lower than the floor of the igloo to allow the cold to sink. The digging in the tent's vestibule does that, but just a little. But hey! when cold, you take everything that can help to get warmer, right? ;)

I agree . Very cozy and fun. I do add one other piece, a 6 shot 44 with a 4” barrel. Very comforting

In Alberta Canada we're pretty used to -35 to - 45° C weather for anywhere from 6-8 months a year and anywhere from 3'-5' of snow! Yet not always at once but very known to happen! So I'm getting what you were going through!
@NorwegianXplorer Жыл бұрын
That is cold, very rare in Norway to get that cold
