The traditional tune of "Nos Galan" was first recorded in John Thomas' 1752 tune-book for fiddlers, listed twice in standard and shorthand notation. Lyrics accompanying this tune appeared for the first time in a later publication in 1784, Edward Jones' "Musical and Poetical relicks of the Welsh Bards". Since then, "Nos Galan" has enjoyed immense popularity; the Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant wrote English lyrics to the song "Deck the Halls", which shares the tune. John Ceiriog Hughes penned the lyrics to this particular version of the song in 1873.
Performed by the Cambridge Singers, 2008.
